Superintendent's Column
As students complete first semester and final exams today, it's hard to believe that the school year is already half over! We continue to be so proud of our students who are engaged in philanthropic and outreach efforts, particularly during the holiday season. Our school community has much to feel grateful about, and we look forward to what lies ahead in the coming weeks and months. Both campuses will still have some activity during the winter break while our athletic teams compete in tournaments and a scheduled districtwide phone implementation occurs. Shortly into January 2015, guidance counselors will begin the registration process for incoming students in the Class of 2019 and host a parent information night to welcome those families. Earlier this calendar year, I previewed a component of the upcoming Spring 2015 assessments also known as PARCC testing (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers). Lake Park, as well as other area schools, participated in PARCC field testing in April to gain familiarity with the testing process and better understand the assessments to be used during this school year. Recently, at the discretion of Illinois State Superintendent Dr. Chris Koch, high schools were given an option to adjust the student population for PARCC testing. Although Lake Park's initial plans called for administering the PARCC exam to Grade 11 students, a final decision has been made to test Grade 9 students enrolled in English Language Arts I and Algebra I. Similarly, a majority of surrounding high schools have also opted for Grade 9 testing to reduce the testing burden for juniors that includes the ACT and Advanced Placement exams. More information will be communicated to our freshmen students and families as the testing calendar is redeveloped. In preparation for the staff to effectively implement and administer PARCC testing, please note an additional SMART Day has been added to the school calendar on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. This modified schedule is in addition to the regularly scheduled SMART Day on Wednesday, January 14, 2015. Reminders will be sent to families when school resumes. Thank you for your ongoing support of Lake Park. We recognize that our successes exist because of your involvement. Our Board of Education, administration and staff wish everyone happy holidays, safe travels and a relaxing winter break!

Lancers Spread Holiday Cheer to Others
Lake Park students, teachers, staff and activity sponsors have been engaged in numerous philanthropic and volunteer efforts the past several weeks to help neighbors near and far:
Operation Christmas Shoebox
Lake Park Math Team members and coaches volunteered their time recently with the Operation Christmas Shoexbox project. This effort was done in the memory of former Math Team member Jake Hilligoss. The students helped to pack 130 Christmas shoeboxes that will be donated to Samaritan's Purse.
"Sharing Trees" East Campus Sophomore Class Council sponsored the annual Sharing Tree to benefit underprivileged children in Bloomingdale Township. Lancer students and staff were invited to take a bell with age/gift description for families in need and return a wrapped gift with the bell taped to the present.
West Campus Student Council supported Children's Home & Aid Society to fulfill wishes for families in need. Ornaments in the main office displayed the wishes of participating families. Twenty families were generously adopted by Student Council.
Feed Our Starving Children
Students enrolled in Dance and Nutrition and Fitness classes recently helped to assemble 97 boxes of food at Feed My Starving Children that will provide 20,952 meals for children in Zimbabwe. Mathematically, this works out to 57 children receiving a full meal every day for a full year.

New Phone System Installation Scheduled for Winter Break
At the October Board of Education meeting, the purchase and installation of a new districtwide VOIP phone system was approved. The primary reasons for this decision included improving the ability to communicate within the structure of each school and the ability to gather information during a critical incident.
Please note the conversion to the new phone system will occur during winter intermission to minimize down time and create a more seamless transition for all users. During the scheduled system upgrades on Monday, December 29, no inbound or outbound calls will be possible. However, the email system will still be operational and campuses will be staffed from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for any visitors. Due to the holidays, the campuses and Administration Center offices will be closed on December 24-26 and January 1, 2015.
Thank you for your patience and understanding during this process. The district website will provide additional updates about any schedule changes or expected downtime during the phone system installation. For your reference, an updated staff directory is available since some phone numbers may change. The phone numbers will be effective December 30, 2014.

ACT Exam Preparation Course Deadline Nears
In preparation for the ACT that will be administered to juniors on March 3, 2015, Lake Park will begin offering a course in January to develop the study skills to improve ACT scores. In addition to English, science, reading and mathematics preparation, the course emphasizes test-taking strategies and techniques. Students will gain exposure to ACT testing situations, practice and remediation, and explanations on ACT style correct questions and types of answers meant to distract from the correct response.
Students can choose to take this course either on Saturday mornings, or Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Registration is $210 and will be accepted until the January 5, 2015 deadline or until all spots are filled. View the course brochure for additional details and to complete an application.
The Lake Park High School Educational Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships to students whose families have a financial need. If your student wishes to apply for a scholarship, contact Sheila Finstein at (630) 295-5321 or sfinstein@lphs.org.

SMART Day Added to the School Calendar
A modification has been made to the school calendar to include one additional SMART day on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. This SMART day is in addition to the previously-scheduled SMART day on Wednesday, January 14, as reflected on the 2014-2015 school calendar. The purpose of the additional SMART day is for PARCC online preparation and the English Language Arts (ELA) and math assessment formats. Lake Park recognizes that staff and students need to become familiar with the computer-based environment used for PARCC, the different screens, buttons, and tools in the toolbar, as well as content format. On January 7, Dr. Susan Hall from the 95 Percent Group will provide an in-service on the PARCC navigation tools along with a walk through of the ELA practice passages and questions. In addition, Mr. Scott Miller from Naperville Central will provide guidance and insights for the Math assessment.
