Dr. Lynne Panega

The Technology and Manufacturing Association (TMA) Foundation Board announced this week that Lake Park has been named the recipient of a $50,000 grant, which will provide $12,500 for four years to support the purchase of equipment to be used in the Precision Machining program.

This exciting news provides additional momentum to the district's commitment to provide curricular opportunities that support the fields of precision machining and engineering. During the November Board of Education meeting, members voted to begin the process of constructing a 3,000 square foot technology and precision machining facility at West Campus. This "innovation lab" will be designed to support the increasing demand for skilled workers in these industries.

The outstanding progress of this initiative has been made possible through the support and guidance of Lake Park's 36-member Advisory Council that brings together faculty members, business and community partners, alumni and representatives of the Lake Park Board of Education. The involvement of local business leaders providing industry insights has helped influence curriculum decisions and secure recognition as a Project Lead The Way (PLTW) school.

The benefits of a pathways program like PLTW include providing exposure to technical concepts and hands-on experience with equipment and software. Lake Park students will graduate as highly qualified and even have the opportunity to earn a competitive advantage by testing for industry-approved certification while enrolled.

The first course in the PLTW program, Introduction to Engineering Design, launched this school year and has a student enrollment of 143 students. The second course of the PLTW sequence, Principles of Engineering, received Board of Education approval in October for an August 2015 implementation date. It is a high school-level survey course of engineering that gives students the opportunity to develop skills and understanding of course concepts through activity-, project-, and problem-based learning.

The first course in the Engineering and Precision Machining program was also Board approved in October and will be implemented in August 2015. Providing dual credit with College of DuPage, the course is designed for students with little background in the use of metal-working machine tools. Basic principles and operations on the engine lathe, vertical milling machine, surface grinder and precision measurement will be explored in this one-year course.

We are very excited about our progress and will continue to seek local and national grant opportunities that could provide additional resources for growth. Our dynamic partnerships with industry experts ensure that we are making decisions in the best interest of preparing students for their futures. Watch for more updates about the progress of our PLTW curriculum and the development of Lake Park's Innovation Lab scheduled for completion by next school year.

Lancer Holiday Season Kicks Off

The Lake Park Holiday Craft Fair, a holiday tradition for 33 years, brings together the local community and crafters for a day of holiday cheer.  This year nearly 100 crafters will display and sell gift items on Saturday, December 6 from 10:00 a.m. to  3:00 p.m. in the West Campus Field House.  Adult admission is $2.00; children and senior citizens are free.  Proceeds from the Holiday Craft Fair will benefit the Junior Class Council, the Family Career and Community Leaders of America and the German Sister School programs.

The schedule of holiday events continue when the Lake Park High School Band and Choir Programs present the annual Holiday Festival of Music on Tuesday, December 9. Enjoy the sounds of the season at this annual tradition, which includes a crowd favorite invitation for all Lake Park choral alumni to sing Handel's "Hallelujah" on stage.

The joint performance begins at 7:00 p.m. in the West Campus Auditorium, and doors open at approximately 6:30 p.m. for first-come, first-served seating. Tickets can be purchased at the door until capacity is reached.  Admission is $3 for adults, $2 students (other high schools and college), and free for senior citizens, Lake Park students and children under 13.

Finally, mark your calendar for a not-to-be-missed holiday event as the Lake Park Theatre Department presents the Dicken's classic, A Christmas Carol.  The show will be classically staged with period costumes, English accents and all of your favorite characters.  Incorporating the traditions of the holiday season, the performances will also include a sing-a-long during curtain call when audience members can join in Christmas carols before leaving.  Bring your family to watch this story of turning a miser and leave filled with the spirit of the holidays.

A Christmas Carol runs December 11-13 at 7 p.m. and December 14 with a 2 p.m. matinee.

Ticket prices are $5 for adults, $3 students (other high schools and college), and free for senior citizens, Lake Park students and children under 13 years of age.

WGN Features Fundraising Goal of Lake Park Alum

Earlier this week, WGN's "Mr. Brightside" segment featured an inspirational story about Lauren Gross, a Lake Park graduate from the Class of 2013.  She has spinal muscular atrophy, which makes her dependent on a ventilator and a wheel chair.  Lauren's academic goal is to attend Olivet Nazarene, but she is in need of a handicap accessible van for transportation.  Her family launched a GoFundMe page to share her story and seek donations to help Lauren realize her dream of going to college. The generosity of friends and strangers has been positively overwhelming and helped her to surpass her fundraising goal.

Future Lancers to Take Explore Exam

Beginning this weekend, incoming students in the Class of 2019 are scheduled to take the Explore assessment test to begin preparation for class placement.  Each student planning to attend Lake Park next fall must take these tests, which will provide the counseling staff with information about students' skills in English, Reading, Math, and Science reasoning. The schedule for each middle school follows:

Peacock Middle

Spring Wood

Session 2 - December 13, 2014

Students should report to East Campus by 7:45 a.m. on their respective date and enter the building through the front main entrance by the flag pole.  Parents can use the Bus Parking Lot in front of the main entrance to drop-off and pick-up your students.  Please be aware that there will be many students entering and leaving at the same time.

Testing begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and will end at approximately 11:00 a.m.  Students must be checked into their test room and ready to begin prior to 8:00 a.m.  Unfortunately, students cannot be admitted to the testing area after 8:00 a.m.  Each student should bring two #2 pencils, an eraser and a calculator.  Please encourage your student to get a good night's rest and to eat a healthy breakfast before the test.

Preparing for First Semester Final Exams

First semester final exams will be conducted Wednesday, December 17 through Friday, December 19.  View the final exam schedule.

All seniors are exempt from any final in which they are receiving a semester grade of A or B. Attendance during final exams is critical to all students. Any student who misses a final exam, without an excused absence, will receive a zero for the final, and automatically receive a grade of F for the course. Students arriving late will not be given additional time to complete or make-up an examination.

Students can prepare for finals at the Bloomingdale Public Library's "Exam Cram" hosted during December 15-17 from 3:00-9:00 p.m.

This event is open to all high school students (Grades 9-12), including non-Bloomingdale residents. Students will have access to group and quiet study areas, Wi-Fi, computers and reference help. The library will provide caffeine, snacks and serve pizza at 7:00 p.m.

SMART Day Added to the School Calendar

A modification has been made to the school calendar to include one additional SMART day on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. This SMART day is in addition to the previously-scheduled SMART day on Wednesday, January 14, as reflected on the 2014-2015 school calendar. The purpose of the additional SMART day is for PARCC online preparation and the English Language Arts (ELA) and math assessment formats.

Lake Park recognizes that staff and students need to become familiar with the computer-based environment used for PARCC, the different screens, buttons, and tools in the toolbar, as well as content format.

On January 7, Dr. Susan Hall from the 95 Percent Group will provide an in-service on the PARCC navigation tools along with a walk through of the ELA practice passages and questions. In addition, Mr. Scott Miller from Naperville Central will provide guidance and insights for the Math assessment.

ACT Exam Preparation Course Deadline Nears

In preparation for the ACT that will be administered to juniors on March 3, 2015, Lake Park will begin offering a course in January to develop the study skills to improve ACT scores. In addition to English, science, reading and mathematics preparation, the course emphasizes test-taking strategies and techniques. Students will gain exposure to ACT testing situations, practice and remediation, and explanations on ACT style correct questions and types of answers meant to distract from the correct response.

Students can choose to take this course either on Saturday mornings, or Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Registration before December 18 is $190; after December 18 is $210. Registrations are accepted until the January 5, 2015 deadline or until all spots are filled. View the course brochure for additional details and to complete an application.
