Superintendent's Column
The holiday season traditionally provides even more opportunities to help people in our communities, and from clothing drives to food drives, our Lancers are giving back to others in meaningful ways. At Lake Park, this spirit of generosity is a year-round commitment that makes me especially proud. I am happy to share with you some recent highlights how Lake Park is making an impact.
On Veterans Day, junior and seniors students participated in a fundraising drive at community sites and collected $2700 in donations for the "Give to the Yanks" foundation benefiting VA Hospitals. This joint effort was hosted in partnership with the American Legion Post 1084 in Roselle.
In the last LP Link, we previewed the 36th Annual Bowl-A-Thon that was hosted to benefit the National Reye's Syndrome Foundation and provide financial resources to educational programs for children, teenagers and parents. Students enrolled in Lake Park's technical student organizations raised $3,360 and created awareness about the early warning signs of this deadly disease.
Students and staff opened their closets this week and donated gently used jackets, hats, gloves, shirts, pants and more to the Student Council Clothing Drive, which generated an impressive amount of items through a friendly competition between the campuses. The clothing drive will have an immediate local impact when the items are delivered to the DuPage County's People Resource Center in Wheaton.
Our curriculum provides a unique opportunity for junior and senior students to enroll in Service in Action (SIA), a course that combines academic instruction with experiential learning opportunities in the form of service projects and field experiences. The SIA classes have been exceptionally busy this fall with an "Act of Kindness" initiative that involved the Roselle Park District helping to identify senior citizens who required additional help with outside yard activities. Students provided assistance with raking yards, cleaning debris from gutters and flowerbeds, putting away patio furniture and winterizing the homes of our senior neighbors.
Furthermore, SIA classes are completing a community food drive this week. The students visited surrounding neighborhoods, dropped off bags asking for food items, returned days later to pick up the donations and are organizing and packaging the items for delivery to the Itasca Food Pantry. Their community involvement continues in December with a field trip scheduled to the WINGS (Women in Need Growing Stronger) logistics center to help sort donated items for their resale shop. The profits made from the resale shop benefit women and families affected by domestic violence.
I am grateful for our students and staff who have created a culture of giving generously and helping others in need. May we all learn to embrace this community spirit and celebrate a Thanksgiving season filled with the richness of family and friends!

Best Pizza in Lancerland Attracts Over 400 Residents
More than 400 Lancerland residents and students attended the 2014 "Best Pizza in Lancerland" fundraising event that featured guests tasting pizzas and voting for their favorites, while members of the Lake Park choir performed in a coffee-house format. The event, hosted by the Lake Park Choral Parent Association (LPCPA), raised nearly $3,000 that will support various Choral activities.

Memorial Garden to be Built Next Spring
In honor of its 25th anniversary, the Lake Park High School Educational Foundation (LPEF) is leading a school/community effort to fund and build a Memorial Garden to honor deceased students, staff members, and individuals who made a significant contribution to Lake Park High School along with graduates who lost their lives in service to the country. The Memorial Garden, scheduled to be built in Spring 2015, will be located in front of the West Campus auditorium entrance.
The focal point of the memorial will be a large commemorative stone with an engraved bronze plaque. This memorial stone will be surrounded by a tranquil, landscaped garden with a brick walkway which will also include several benches, giving individuals or families a peaceful and relaxed setting in which to seek solace. The bricks surrounding the memorial will be available for purchase by family, classmates, colleagues, or friends who wish to memorialize an individual.
The concept of a Memorial Garden at Lake Park High School developed from the recommendation of student leaders who wished to honor the memory of a deceased student who passed away suddenly during the 2013-14 school year. The students discussed with the school principals their desire to provide a memorial for the student. During the discussion, the idea of a memorial garden was considered. The principals contacted LPEF who agreed to help with the project as a part of the Foundation's 25th anniversary activities.
The Foundation is currently seeking funding for the project. Retail cost for such a venture is $35,000. However, Lake Park maintenance staff members will provide the labor, and the architectural design services have been donated by ARCON Architects, Inc. The remaining anticipated cost is $25,000.
There are two ways to help honor the memory of members of the Lake Park school community:
* make a private financial donation to assist with installation expenses
* purchase a commemorative brick to honor the memory of a loved one
