Superintendent's
The start of November traditionally marks many academic milestones, the first of which began with the Illinois State Board of Education releasing the annual school and district report cards. Presented in both an "At-a-Glance" and interactive format, the report card information collected during the 2013-2014 school year includes data from test scores, demographics, financial information and school improvement plans.
The 2014 Report Card reflects a state and national move toward monitoring school districts based on multiple measures of growth and performance as opposed to a single test score at one point in time. Furthermore, it features metrics such as the graduation rate and percentage of freshmen on track for college. The Interactive Report Card can be viewed by visiting the State Report Card website and entering "Lake Park."
This year is also the first in which each school's 5Essentials Survey results are posted on the School Report Card. The survey, which was first administered in 2013, is designed to inform school improvement by measuring change. The five "essentials" are: effective leaders, collaborative teachers, involved families, supportive environment and ambitious instruction. Lake Park's report card does not show a response rate this year, because the district did not participate in the 2014 survey. However, beginning on January 13, 2015 and extending through March 13, 2015, parents, students and teachers will have an opportunity to help us understand the perceptions of Lake Park. More information and a survey link will be included in future LP Link issues.
This month also provides an opportunity to provide special recognition as we celebrate "School Board Members Day" on November 15, 2014. This annual designation was created to thank the nearly 6,000 elected school board members in Illinois and build community awareness and understanding about the crucial role of a locally elected board of education. I'm privileged to work directly with Lake Park's Board of Education members who provide outstanding guidance, raise important issues and make responsible decisions in the best interest of our students and communities.
During November 17-21, Lake Park will recognize the National Education Association's 93rd annual American Education Week. The week is dedicated to celebrating public education and honoring individuals who are making a difference in ensuring every child receives a quality education.
While these upcoming dates provide special opportunities for recognition, we acknowledge and appreciate the support of our Board, staff, parents and community members all year round. "We Are Lake Park" because of your contributions and the continuous feedback you provide. Thank you for making our school a welcoming environment that supports student learning!

Bowl-A-Thon To Help Strike Out Reye's Syndrome
More than 100 Lake Park High School students will knock down pins today from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. in an effort to strike out Reye's Syndrome during the 36th annual Bowl-A-Thon to fight this deadly disease. The tradition began more than three decades ago when a former student enrolled in the Cooperative Work Program lost his sister at the age of 3 to Reye's Syndrome, a medical diagnosis that had little national awareness or understanding at that time.
Thanks to the generosity of sponsors Itasca Bank & Trust, BMO Harris Bank in Bloomingdale and Roselle, and B runswick Zone in Roselle, students from Lake Park High School's Technical Student Organizations will bowl to support the Northern Illinois Chapter of the National Reye's Syndrome Foundation.
To date students have raised over $90,000 in donations since they first began supporting the bowl-a-thon. This year students in DECA (business club), FCCLA (Family, Careers, and Community Leaders of America) and FMP (Future Medical Professionals) pledged to raise more than $4,000 in donations. To contribute to the fundraiser, contact Curriculum Leader and DECA advisor Kevin Jones at kjones@lphs.org or any student in DECA, FCCLA or FMP. The money collected will fund educational programs to alert children, teenagers and parents of the warning signs of Reye's Syndrome, a deadly disease that strikes swiftly and can attack any child or adult without warning.

Fall Play Showcases a Historical Drama
In 1926, radium was a miracle cure and watches with radium-painted dials were all the rage - until the women who painted them became mysteriously ill. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls by D.W. Gregory, follows Grace Fryer's journey from acceptance to fighting the corporate system.
Make plans to attend a performance of the fall play and watch this gripping historical drama as Lake Park's cast of 12 students plays more than 30 character roles!
The curtain rises at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 13-15 at the East Campus Dice Auditorium. Admission is $5 for adults; $3 for non-Lake Park students; and free for senior citizens, Lake Park students with IDs and grade school children. Tickets are available at the door, or by pre-ordering at lptheatreboxoffice@lphs.org.

Students Commemorate Veterans Day and WWI
Community members are invited to help Lake Park commemorate Veterans Day and the 100th anniversary of World War One by attending a special event on Tuesday, November 11 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the East Campus Community Room. Social Studies teacher Ms. Hamacher and nearly 20 student volunteers have organized a gallery exhibition with 17 displays on topics such as Medal of Honor recipients, air warfare, propaganda, the home front (with a focus on children), the influence of war on poetry and art, life in the trenches, and more.
Attendees will also have an opportunity to watch student performances of dramatic readings/journal entries and view a Lake Park produced video featuring student interviews with veterans, including three of whom are staff members.
During the school day, approximately 40-50 students will be collecting donations for the American Legion Post 1084 in Roselle at the train station and other community locations during rush hour, social studies classes will view the video featuring veterans and have an opportunity to participate in the gallery walk of war displays. As part of these special events, students have also been selling t-shirts to wear on Veterans Day. Proceeds will benefit PAWWS (Paws Assisting Wounded Warriors) in Palos Heights and the Roselle Veterans Memorial, currently under construction in downtown Roselle. |
