Superintendent's
As the 2014-2015 school year reaches the end of first quarter today, I am energized by the accomplishments at Lake Park already and look forward to the results ahead. Our successes as a district rely on the strength of partnerships with so many stakeholders -- our parents, sender schools, communities, businesses and more.
Evidence shows that the active involvement of parents has a significant correlation to student academic success. The 24/7 availability of our Home Access Center (HAC) allows parents to view their student's grades, teachers, test scores and transcripts. While this technology is important and provides convenient access for up-to-date information, there is even greater value in meeting with our teachers one-on-one. The opportunity for these individualized conferences is coming up this month on October 23-24. I encourage all of our parents to take advantage of this chance to meet with teachers and learn about your student's progress. Scheduling information, including step-by-step instructions with logins to register electronically, was mailed to parents earlier this week. You can access the parent scheduler here until 3:00 p.m. on October 22.
Unique partnerships and learning opportunities can arise out of shared experiences as demonstrated by a recent example involving Fenton High School in Bensenville. In advance of a visit by New York Times bestselling author Jay Asher at both schools, Lake Park freshmen Honors English students collaborated with Fenton Accelerated English freshmen using Google Hangouts via a live video chat. The end goal was for the students to collaborate on producing a superhero-themed workbook that delivers an anti-bullying message for elementary students in sender schools. The result of this project will have a long-term impact beyond the author visit and student assemblies.
Another example of a valuable partnership initiated this school year that I would like to share with you again is the opportunity for Lake Park families to attend workshops offered by the Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) at no cost. We are pleased to align with Glenbard High School District 87 who has an established and comprehensive parent program with 30 years of experience. The purpose of GPS is to assist and facilitate real-world parenting skills, enhance teens' social and emotional development, and promote respect-based relationships that will keep adolescents safe. The schedule of national speakers is impressive, and I hope you will consider attending their upcoming workshop or review the program brochure for future dates and topics.
As always, thank you for your active involvement and continued support of our students and campuses! We look forward to kicking off second quarter with the same enthusiasm that Lancer Nation has demonstrated this fall in the classroom and during Homecoming, fundraisers and extracurricular activities.

Author of #1 New York Times Bestseller Visits Lake Park
Lake Park students had a firsthand opportunity to listen to and meet #1 New York Times bestselling author Jay Asher when he visited both campuses this week.
Mr. Asher's visit was generously sponsored by the Lake Park Educational Foundation and included a presentation about his book Thirteen Reasons Why. During the assemblies, he talked about his writing background, inspirations for the book and publisher and fan reactions.
Mr. Asher spent the day at both campuses meeting students, signing autographs, taking pictures and lunching with a group of about 25 students. Lake Park's Stand for the Silent club presented him with a t-shirt in honor of the visit as part of his "50 States Against Bullying Tour" which coincided with Anti-Bullying Awareness Month.
Read the author's blog to find out the impressive things he had to say about Lake Park High School.
