Superintendent's
Column

Dr. Lynne Panega

The early weeks of the 2014-2015 school year have presented some critical issues and conversations that have been important for the entire Lake Park school community. I commend our students for demonstrating maturity, our parents for supporting administrative decisions and our staff for displaying leadership while turning challenging moments into learning opportunities.

Please take time and view this important student-generated, anti-bullying video that captures such a positive response to this week's social media situation.  Their words are powerful and inspiring!

The safety and security of our students - in a physical environment or in a digital environment - is the highest priority for our leadership team. This commitment is demonstrated in countless ways including the designation of Aug. 25-29 as "Safety Week" at both campuses. The purposeful actions of this week include reviewing expectations of students during lockdown procedures; discussing severe weather drills and locations; and physically walking the evacuation routes from classrooms. Our goal is to educate everyone about the "REDI" plan and ensure their understanding of what to do in an emergency situation.

Additional safety measures at both campuses include the presence of a full-time School Resource Officer. As members of the Roselle Police Department, these officers serve as our onsite, trained expert for clarifying and handling emergency protocols. Lake Park takes pride in the valuable partnership with the RPD and other local authorities who are actively involved in ensuring student safety. Furthermore, upcoming staff Institute days throughout the school year will provide opportunities to stage active shooter drills in the buildings and reinforce best practices.

During the incidents that have occurred at Lake Park in the past week, from anonymous social media posts to a sexual predator being denied access to West Campus, you have undoubtedly received much communication from the district. Our parent notification system allows messages to be sent as voicemails, emails and text messages. The capability of this service provider is important and allows us to designate messages for both outreach and emergency purposes. We are committed to delivering timely, relevant information and look forward to future capabilities as development for a new district website begins later next month. Yet another way that you can stay informed about important district decisions is to view our monthly Board Briefs that are published following Board of Education meetings. The reader-friendly summary captures highlights from Board presentations, discussion items and action items. The August issue is available by clicking here.

Our community-building theme of "We Are Lake Park" unites us and has been an important foundation for the experiences we have faced already. Thank you for your ongoing involvement and constructive feedback. Together, let us all continue to demonstrate the tenets of the Lancer Way to be respectful to each other, responsible and safe!

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Heats Up in Lancer Nation

From the Board of Education to staff and students, the Lake Park school community has embraced the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge designed to raise awareness and funds to help find a cure for ALS. View the challenges accepted by Board of Education member P.J. Olzen following the August 25 Board meeting as well as students enrolled in the Service in Action (SIA) classes by clicking on the images.

SIA students are committed to doing more than just pour buckets of ice water on their heads. They have been planning and organizing a fundraiser involving Lancer Nation in other meaningful ways. T-shirt sales during lunch periods and a bake sale occurring today are raising additional funds that will be donated to the cause. When a t-shirt is purchased, students can nominate a teacher to participate in the ice bucket challenge taking place after tonight's first home football game. Students are also encouraged to participate if they bring their own bucket.

Make a splash and plan to join Lancer Nation near the concession stand after the football game tonight!  Visit the ALS website to learn more about this national social media campaign and to make a donation.

Daily Beast Ranks Lake Park Among "Top High Schools"

The recent announcement that Lake Park High School was named to The Daily Beast's 2014 list of "Top High Schools" provides another academic achievement for which Lake Park students can feel proud. The ranking includes culling six indicators - with graduation and college acceptance rates weighed most heavily - and comparing the data to public high schools in the U.S. Other criteria included: college-level courses and exams, percentage of students with free or reduced lunch, as well as SAT and ACT scores - another mark of how well a school prepares students for college.

This honor adds to an already impressive list of awards including: ranked by Newsweek as one of America's Best High Schools; ranked by The Washington Post as one of America's Most Challenging High Schools; and named to the College Board AP Honor Roll for expanding opportunity and improving performance for Advanced Placement students.

Mark Your Calendars: West Campus Curriculum Night

Lake Park parents are invited to attend the  West Campus Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 3. During the evening parents will have the opportunity to follow their student's schedule, attend teacher presentations about learning objectives and course expectations, and visit with members of our Pupil Personnel Services department.  In addition, informational sessions that highlight technology initiatives will be offered.  This year, students will have access to Google Apps for Education, which helps students take full advantage of the Internet and mobile technology for learning.

Anderson's Book Fair

In addition to the use of classroom textbooks, which is included in student registration fees, novels for English classes must be acquired by students at an additional cost. To avoid these costs, students may check the books out from a local public library or the school library-though limited quantities are available. If students wish to purchase their own copies, they may do so from the store of their choosing (Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, Half-Price Books, etc.), paying mind to the ISBN number, which is located on the back of the book, near the bar code.

For your convenience in purchasing the required titles for fall semester, Anderson's Book Fair is being held on-campus through Friday, September 5. The book fair will also be available in the library during curriculum night.  Books can be purchased at the school library using cash, credit card, or with a check written to Lake Park High School. To determine which titles to purchase and the prices of the books at the book fair, please refer to the English class listed on your student's schedule. Books can also be purchased online.

"50 States Against Bullying Tour" Presenter, Author to Visit

"You don't know what goes on in anyone's life but your own.

And when you mess with one part of a person's life, you're
not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can't be
that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person's life, you're messing with their entire life."
~ Jay Asher, Thirteen Reasons Why

Planning is underway to host all-student assemblies at both campuses on Monday, October 6 to welcome Jay Asher, author of the award-winning book Thirteen Reasons Why as part of his

"50 States Against Bullying" tour. The Lake Park library staff, in partnership with the English Department and Stand for the Silent club, will launch a "pass the book" campaign to circulate copies at each school. Books are also available for check-out in the school library and local public libraries or a free audio book is available here.

Serious themes are presented in the novel and include bullying, suicide and rumors within a high school setting. Stand for the Silent sponsors and students will play an active role to promote positive messages, share resources for these important topics and generate interest for Mr. Asher's visit that is funded by the Lake Park Educational Foundation.  View a video from the author to learn more about this national tour.

Health Department to Offer Vision and Hearing Screenings

The DuPage County Health Department has scheduled Lake Park's Vision and Hearing dates for the 2014-2015 school year as follows:

West Campus: Wednesday, September 10; re-screening on Wednesday, September 24

East Campus:  Wednesday, October 29; re-screening on Wednesday, November 12

Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening if an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months.

Memorial Garden Plans Underway

In honor of its 25th anniversary, the Lake Park High School Educational Foundation (LPEF) is leading a school/community effort to fund and build a Memorial Garden to honor deceased students, faculty, staff and friends. The garden will be located in front of the auditorium entrance at West Campus.

The focal point of the memorial will be a large commemorative stone with an engraved bronze plaque. This memorial stone will be surrounded by a tranquil, landscaped garden with a brick walkway which will also include several benches, giving individuals or families a peaceful and relaxed setting in which to seek solace. The bricks surrounding the memorial will be available for purchase by family, classmates, colleagues, or friends who wish to memorialize an individual.

The memorial garden was designed compliments of ARCON Associates with input from a planning committee including representatives from the LPEF, Lake Park High School, and the community. The anticipated cost to create and install the Lake Park Memorial Garden is $35,000. LPEF is currently raising money for this project which is expected to be completed in May 2015. You can help bring the Lake Park Memorial Garden vision to fruition by contributing a financial donation or purchasing a commemorative brick for $100 each. For more information contact the Foundation's Executive Director, Jennifer Jungel, at jjungel@lphs.org or (630) 295-5264.
