With Lancer pride and spirit, the 2014-2015 school year is officially underway! We have so much to be proud of as we celebrate our students, parents, staff and community. The beginning of another year provides an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments and establish even higher expectations.
As always, the summer months proved to be a busy time of preparation from academics to operations. Weeks of curriculum planning and building renovations all contributed to this week's smooth and successful opening of school. Our summer school program benefited 300 students who enrolled for credit recovery or to take advantage of courses like the Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish boot camp offered for the first time. This experience makes us excited to expand AP preparation classes next summer. During June and July, the campuses were also home to athletic camps and a first-ever robotic camp for middle school students.
Faculty participated in College Board professional development opportunities and attended national workshops that focus on best practices and strategies for increasing enrollment and academic success in AP courses. This commitment to teaching and learning is among the reasons that we received outstanding results about the 802 students who took 1376 exams last spring-- 81 percent of whom earned a score of 3 or higher. With exams taken in 26 different subject areas, we are proud that 76 percent of tests had scores of 3 or higher.
Throughout this coming year, you may hear and see the expression "We Are Lake Park" - this is a symbolic commitment as an entire school community to build on the Lake Park tradition of pride and excellence. Our Board of Education, administration, faculty and staff are committed to preparing students for college and career, personal responsibility and future success.
I invite all of you as parents, alumni, community members and businesses who support Lake Park to embrace this motto. Together, let us share this privilege and responsibility to model for all our students what it truly means to live the Lancer Way.
This new school year marks an ideal opportunity for you to get involved and provide valuable feedback that can help improve our support services and communication efforts. We look forward to seeing you on our campuses soon!

"Lancer Way" Returns to Encourage Positive Behavior
During the 2014-2015 school year, Lake Park will continue the implementation of a behavioral framework known to students as the "Lancer Way." The introduction of this program last school year helped students to identify responsible, respectful and safe behaviors in common areas such as the library and cafeteria. Additionally, the "Lancer Way" promoted appropriate ways for students to conduct themselves during school-sponsored activities like Homecoming, Prom and athletic events.
Look for more information from the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Committee in the coming weeks as well as incentives for student engagement and positive behavior in all environments.

Student Absence Notification System Ensures Accuracy
Beginning the first full week of school, Lake Park will once again implement a notification system that auto-generates messages to parents for unaccounted student absences during the school day. This communication initiative, originally piloted in spring 2014, is designed to improve efficiency as well as ensure accuracy of student records. If a student is marked absent in periods 1 or 2, a voicemail and email message will be sent alerting parents by 10 a.m. The same communication will be sent at the end of day for students who are absent during any periods 3-8. Parents who receive the notification messages are asked to contact the attendance office to verify if the absence should be recorded as excused or unexcused--East Campus: (630) 295-5232; West Campus: (630) 295-5332.

Online Fee Payment System Delivers Convenience
The introduction of an online fee payment system last spring created convenience for all families to make payment towards any outstanding school debt. Parents can access this system by clicking here and logging in with their current registration information and pin for Online Registration. The site is also accessible via the Home Access Center (HAC). Benefits of the online system include 24/7 availability and the elimination of writing checks for student fees. For questions or assistance accessing the fee payment system, call (630) 295-5331.

Mark Your Calendars: Curriculum Night
Lake Park parents are invited to attend Curriculum Night on Wednesday, August 27 for East Campus and Wednesday, September 3 for West Campus. During the evening parents will have the opportunity to follow their student's schedule, attend teacher presentations about learning objectives and course expectations, and visit with members of our Pupil Personnel Services department. In addition, informational sessions that highlight technology initiatives will be offered. This year, students will have access to Google Apps for Education, which helps students take full advantage of the Internet and mobile technology for learning.
Anderson's Book Fair
In addition to the use of classroom textbooks, which is included in student registration fees, novels for English classes must be acquired by students at an additional cost. To avoid these costs, students may check the books out from a local public library or the school library-though limited quantities are available. If students wish to purchase their own copies, they may do so from the store of their choosing (Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, Half-Price Books, etc.), paying mind to the ISBN number, which is located on the back of the book, near the bar code. For your convenience in purchasing the required titles for fall semester, Anderson's Book Fair will be held on-campus from Monday, August 25 through Friday, September 5. The book fair will also be available in the library during curriculum night. During those times, books can be purchased at the school library using cash, credit card, or with a check written to Lake Park High School. To determine which titles to purchase and the prices of the books at the book fair, please refer to the English class listed on your student's schedule. Books can also be purchased online at:
