Superintendent's
Column

Lynne Panega
Dr. Lynne Panega

As Lake Park begins spring break, I want to take a moment to reflect on this past month and preview some of our upcoming events and activities.

Although the election results from the March 18 General Primary did not support the proposed Community Aquatic Center, the Lake Park Board of Education and administration acknowledge the voice of our seven communities and thank the residents for exercising their right to vote.  Lake Park had decided to pursue another referendum for the Community Aquatic Center, because the redesigned proposal included more community amenities and benefits with year-round access for residents.  We believed it was important to give residents an opportunity to vote on this proposal, which had significant enhancements from the April 2013 election.

Despite the disappointing outcome, the process of collaboration with the Bloomingdale, Itasca, Medinah and Roselle Park Districts was valuable.  We are proud of and appreciate the efforts of everyone involved - Board members, administrators, staff, students and community volunteers - who helped to champion the Lake Park Community Aquatic Center.

Today and during Fridays in March, the Lake Park school community has been sporting "Hoops for Hearts" tee shirts to create awareness of heart disease and as a fundraising effort to benefit the American Heart Association.  The afternoon assemblies at both campuses will feature a student versus staff basketball game sponsored by the Physical Education Department.  Stay tuned next issue for a summary of the amount raised for this spirited event!

When students return after spring break, the busy season of assessment testing will begin with the PARCC pilot and PSAE and continue with Advanced Placement and final exams.  It is important to remind students of the importance of this standardized testing and keep them engaged academically as we complete the final quarter of the 2013-2014 school year.

Next month we will honor three distinguished alumni, four staff members and 19 students at the sixth annual Lake Park Spirit of Excellence Celebration Dinner on Thursday, April 10. Please make plans to join us for this special occasion and RSVP today.

We look forward to the safe return of our students and staff on Monday, April 7 and heading into the final weeks on a positive note!

Technology Enhancements Deliver Convenience, Accuracy

Online Fee Payment System Now Available

The recent introduction of an online fee payment system creates convenience for all families to make payment towards any outstanding school debt.  Parents can access this new system by clicking here and logging in with their current registration information and pin for Online Registration.  The link is also available via the Home Access Center (HAC) or under the "Information for Parents" tab on the district website.  Benefits of the online system include 24/7 availability and the elimination of writing checks for student fees.  For questions or assistance accessing the fee payment system, call (630) 295-5331.

Please note that graduating seniors must pay any outstanding debt before a final transcript will be issued.  After Friday, May 9, personal checks will no longer be accepted for payment.  Families can make cash payments or use the online fee payment system for any unpaid charges.

Student Absence Notification System Launches

Beginning the week of April 7, Lake Park will implement a notification system that auto-generates messages to parents for unaccounted student absences during the school day.  This communication initiative is designed to improve efficiency as well as ensure accuracy of student records. If a student is marked absent in periods 1 or 2, a voicemail and email message will be sent alerting parents by 10:00 a.m.  The same communication will be sent at the end of day for students who are absent during any periods 3-8.  Parents who receive the notification messages are asked to contact the attendance office to verify if the absence should be recorded as excused or unexcused.

Food Drive and Fundraising Effort to Honor Former Student

The Lake Park Math Team will host a food packing event to benefit the Northern Illinois Food Bank's Back Pack Program on Tuesday, April 15 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Lake Park East Campus student cafeteria.  Each backpack contains shelf-stable and nutritious foods to help feed up to three children over the weekend.  The Food Bank works directly with school professionals to identify children in need of food assistance.

The event is sponsored by Jakesoutreach.com, a memorial fund and website established by the family and friends of Jake Ryan Hilligoss to continue supporting the kind of charitable acts in which he was involved.  Jake was 15 years old, a Highest Honors student at Lake Park and a member of the Math Team, when he passed away from an unexpected heart arrhythmia in 2013.  He was a caring, generous young man and this activity designed to help kids in need will honor his legacy.

The kickoff begins after spring break with a food drive from April 8-14 and a cookie sale in the East Campus lobby on Wednesday, April 9 at 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at a cost of $1.00 a bag. Any monetary donations, proceeds from the cookie sale and items collected in the food drive will directly benefit the Food Bank.  For more information, visit www.SolveHungerToday.org

Food collection bins in the lobbies at both campuses will be used to collect regular-sized packages to fit into the back packs.  The following list represents specific items needed for the back packs:
peanut butter, canned chicken, canned tuna, diced tomatoes, canned vegetables (corn, green beans), brown rice, mac and cheese, black beans (canned or dry), pinto beans (canned or dry)

LP Presents First Lego League Night, Summer Camp
Lake Park will present First Lego League (FLL) Night open to families and students in grades 5-7 on Wednesday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the East Campus.  The goal of the program is to spark interest in engineering, technology and robotics among middle school students and to promote the FLL Summer Camp offered at East Campus from July 14 to July 17, 8:00 a.m. to noon.

The event will be facilitated by First Lego League and will include a demonstration by two FLL teams that will showcase the program and competition.  Questions can be addressed to George Gouriotis by calling (630) 893-3838 ext. 1126 or by emailing ggouriotis@medinah11.org.

Contest Play's Production Advances to State Drama Finals
