As your family makes its summer plans, consider these important and active happenings at Lake Park.

Summer School - Lake Park offers credit recovery courses for current students and bridge courses in math, reading, and Algebra Enrichment for incoming freshman.  Click here for more information.

Athletic and Band Camps - The variety of summer activity and athletic camps that LP offers are too numerous to list.  Suffice to say, if your student competes during the school year, then a camp exists to improve their skills and increase their enjoyment.  To register for a summer sports camp, click here.  If your student is interested in Track and Field, then checkout the DuPage Track Club.  They have a link on the LP Athletics homepage.  This club is staffed by many LP coaches.

Freshman and Sophomore August Orientation - Incoming freshmen and sophomores will participate in orientation programs on August 5-7.  [Aug 5 A-K, Aug 6 L-Z, Aug 7 Make-up]  Students will take the bus to and from school, pick up their books, locate their lockers, find their classrooms, have their ID pictures taken, and receive their PE uniforms.  Look for a mailing this summer which explains the orientation programs and accommodations for students who cannot attend the events.

Junior and Senior August Orientation - Juniors participate in the book distribution process on August 5.  Bus transportation will be available according to the normal bus pick up routes and times.  Book distribution for seniors will take place on August 6.  Seniors who require bus transportation can also participate in the book distribution process on August 5 and take advantage of the bus transportation.   Open book distribution at West Campus will take place on August 7.  On any of these three days, students will pick-up their books and schedules, pick-up their parking permits, locate their lockers and find their classrooms.

Registration - Be sure to complete your student's fall registration materials so that their schedule can be distributed on time.  Walk-in registration materials are due by July 25.  Online registration is due by August 1Registration materials received after the due dates are assessed a $27 late fee.

Freshman Family BBQ - Incoming freshman and their families are invited to a picnic on Thursday, August 8 at 6 PM.  The BBQ takes place at the East Campus.  Families will enjoy food, live music, spirit rally, program for parents, and a DJ for the students.  Look for the invitation this summer.  This event is another great opportunity for our freshman to meet their peers from the class of 2017!

Social Studies Highlights
Students Meet Justice O'Connor
Youth and Government sponsor Jeanne Hammacher and students Monica VanDuyne, Matt Pajor, Caitlyn Bradfield, and Jordan Howell meet Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Four Lake Park Youth and Government students, along with sponsor Jeanne Hammacher, met Justice Sandra Day O'Connor when they attended a breakfast at the Union League Club of Chicago where Justice O'Connor was the keynote speaker.  Upon learning that Illinois is only one of ten states that does not require Civics for graduation, sophomore Matt Pajor asked Justice O'Connor how she suggests participants could encourage the State of Illinois to become the 41st state to require Civics.  Her answer was to keep talking to people and spreading the message.  Justice O'Connor is passionate about the importance of Civic Education and how it must be taught to each generation.

Jeanne Hammacher was awarded a fellowship at the National WWI Museum in Kansas City, Missouri.  She will spend several days at the museum participating in workshops for educators, analyzing artifacts, and creating curriculum.

Social Studies faculty member Shaun Conway, who created the Service in Action class at Lake Park, has authored an article which will be featured in an upcoming issue of The Councilor, a journal published by the Illinois Council for the Social Studies. The article supports that service learning courses in public schools, with a particular focus on public service, should be a mandatory component of current and future education reforms.  Speaking from experience with two different service learning classes, Shaun offers a synopsis of what has been accomplished at Lake Park, as well as the purpose and process through which the goals and objectives have been achieved.  The issue is being guest edited by Dr. Jeff Manuel (SIUE) and Dr. Andrew Hartman (ISU); the issue's title focuses on Education Reforms: Past, Present, and Future.

Future Medical Professionals Club Speaker

The Future Medical Professionals Club has hosted a series of speakers to explore a variety of healthcare careers.  This week, Dr. John Sarantopoulos, D.O., spoke to the group about his experiences in medical school as well as his life as a doctor.  During a question and answer session afterwards, Dr. Sarantopoulos answered questions ranging from his opinion on the current health care system to what a student should do to get ready for medical school.

Dr. Sarantopoulos was the fourth speaker to present to the Future Medical Professionals Club members this year.  As part of the Medical Lecture Series, Lake Park alumni Shannon Powers and Alex Spiewak, both current students at Midwestern University, shared their experiences on medical school.  Lancer For Life Mick Murphy has also spoken about his experiences going to school and being a physical therapist with Athletico.

Any student interested in going into the medical profession can join the Future Medical Professionals Club.  Activities range from participating in the Reye's Syndrome Bowl-a-thon to being involved with the Marklund Home's Christmas Giving Tree to helping out with Phil's Friends,a philanthropic organization that supports cancer patients and their families (beginning in the 2013-2014 school year).  The pop tab competition (where all profits go the The Ronald McDonald House at Loyola) is run by FMP as well as the Medical Lecture Series.  Students can contact Kathy Lovelace-Birk, the Future Medical Professionals Club sponsor.
Repurposed Book Contest Saves Books

Have you ever wondered what the library does with books once they are removed from the collection?  During National School Library Week (April 14-20), the West Campus library sponsored a contest to

repurpose books, thus keeping them out of landfills.  Students were encouraged to create a sculpture, decoration, or other creative repurposing of books.  Thirty entries were submitted and the winner was announced on Earth Day, April 22.  Congratulations to  Brittany Anderson for winning first place with her book bag creation.  Sammi Patel won second place for her doll house, and the team of Keith Hoffman and Catherine Lauk won third place for their mailbox.   Abigail Schmidt won Honorable Mention for her book flower pot. Congratulations to everyone for their creativity in discovering new ways to use old books!

TV Practicum Class Hosts Film Festival

On Tuesday, the TV Practicum class hosted Lake Park's first Film Festival.  The films were comprised of student projects over the past few years.  Viewers saw films that  included: short films, PBIS behavior shorts, scary films, Harlem Shakes, Movie Trailers and music videos.  The TV Practicum class also opened up the submissions to the students and staff at West Campus.

The festival ran throughout the school day, and it was coordinated and hosted by Mr. Uppling's TV Practicum class.  The auditorium was packed every period on Tuesday, and when you walked by during the event, if you didn't hear laughter from the hilarious videos, you may have heard shrieks and gasps from the stunning and scary submission entitled, "Haunt."  To see much of what you missed, or to view and share them again, click here.
Masterworks Class and Concert Culminate Year

Lake Park vocal students were fortunate to participate in a vocal master class with world-renowned soprano, Winifred Faix Brown on May 1 when she visited West Campus.  Emily Armbrecht, Kelly Figley, Emily Hoffmann, Katerina Koptik, Hansini Krishna, Kaylee Lynch, Katarina Martucci, Jacob Metoyer, Crystal Muro, Kayla Palmisano, Hannah Shay, Gina Robertelli, Grace Riordan, Alyssa  Solomon, Monica VanDuyne, Faith Weitzner, Amanda Zahorak, and Jordan Zurek were featured during the special event.
The experience was beneficial for both the students and small ensembles working with Ms. Brown, as well as the students observing a master-teacher and performer at work.  Frank Gallo, Lake Park's Director of Choral Activities stated, "The Master Class with Ms. Winifred Brown was an exceptionally memorable event.  All of the vocal music students were engaged throughout the day and were very supportive of their peers.  I look forward to

future Master Classes next year."

Winifred Faix Brown is a soprano globally respected and critically acclaimed for her exquisite voice and committed artistry.  Her strong, agile instrument maintains its beauty through three octaves.  Throughout North and South America as well as Europe, she has astonished audiences with her striking stage presence and depth of interpretation.  Best known for her roles in Mozart and Verdi's repertoire, other favorites of Ms. Brown include Bellini, Strauss, Britten and Broadway.  A former conductor and violinist, Ms. Brown is equally at home with Shostakovich and Schubert, Bernstein and Bach.  A native of South Carolina, this multilingual musician has lived in Germany, France, and Italy as well as Philadelphia and New York.  Having recently completed her fourth season with the Metropolitan Opera, she resides in Chicago.

Lake Park will host its first annual Masterworks Concert on Tuesday, May 14 at 7:00 pm in the West Campus Auditorium.  The concert will feature works scored for both chorus and orchestra.  Having Lake Park wind ensemble members perform alongside a professional string chamber orchestra will allow the pieces to be performed as the composers had originally envisioned rather than with adaptations for other instruments.  The professional string orchestra is possible through funding provided by the Lake Park Choral Parents Association.   Click here for more information.

The Masterworks concert is titled In Memoriam: Dedicated to the Survivors of the Sandy Hook Elementary School Tragedy.  The chorus was comprised of the LPHS curricular choir classes and the orchestra of instrumentalists from LPHS and professional musicians from the Chicago area.  A donation will be accepted at the end of the concert to benefit the DuPage County chapter of the National Association on Mental Illness.

The Senior Recital Concert will be held on Thursday, May 16 at 5 pm in the West Campus Auditorium.

Run or Walk in Camp Earth's 5K

The Lake Park Camp Earth team is hosting, along with Earth Club, a 5K on Saturday, May 11 at 8:00 am at West Campus.  After the event, participants will enjoy food, drinks, and entertainment. Most of the proceeds from the 5K will go directly to the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA). Some of the funds will be used to cover the costs of our Lake Park Camp Earth cyclists who will be biking 3,000 miles around all five of the Great Lakes this summer to bring awareness to and raise money for the Huntington's Disease Society of America. Preregistration cost is $20 and race day registration is $25. Click here to learn more about the 5K and for the registration form.

This summer, five Lake Park seniors (Michael Behrend, Steven Nickison, Tim Ehrhardt, Brandon Pharr and Zach Ciaglia) will leave for their biking/fundraising adventure two days after graduation biking from Roselle through Chicago, Toledo, Niagara Falls, Sault St. Marie, and Duluth.

Camp Earth was founded two years ago by Lake Park students Patrick Dimpsey and AJ Fisher (class of 2010), because they wanted to support a friend and fellow Lake Park student whose father had passed away from the disease and whose brother had subsequently been diagnosed with it. That year, a team of Lake Park cyclists (Dimpsey, Fisher, Tim Fergus, Nick Ciaglia, Marc Ostrowski, Steve Krauss, Ryan Jorgensen, and Tim Layer) biked 3,800 miles across America, beginning in New Jersey and ending in San Francisco. They raised over $10,000 for the Huntington's Disease Society of America. This year, Dimpsey is riding through Iceland, Scandinavia, and Northwest Europe.

You can learn more about the dedicated work of these Lake Park students and alumni by clicking here. To help support their efforts with a donation, click here.

The HSDA is searching for a cure for Huntington's Disease and helping families deal with the effects of the disease. Huntington's Disease is a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder for which there is, at present, no cure. The disease slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, talk and reason. Eventually, the individual becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care. Huntington's Disease profoundly affects the lives of entire families -- emotionally, socially and economically.
