In the digital age, communication with parents and families about student performance abounds.  Email, Home Access Center (HAC), and alternative online communication programs like Moodle and Edmodo allow parents and teachers to engage in virtual conversations about grades, missing assignments, upcoming projects, and celebrations of success.  Some of my veteran colleagues remember the days when we composed progress reports to parents, written in that ancient style known as cursive.  This outdated method also required an envelope, stamp, and postal service.

Today, technology enhanced communication is amazingly efficient; nevertheless, it does not fully satisfy our needs for personal, face-to-face conversation.  With that in mind, please remember that parent-teacher conferences take place on Thursday, February 28 in the evening.   Take advantage of this opportunity to meet briefly with your student's teachers or counselor.  Online registration opens on Monday, February 11 at 8 AM.  Click here for more information.  If families do not have access to a computer to complete the online appointment process, then please call your student's campus for assistance.

Students attend school on February 28; however, they will follow our SMART day schedule. West Campus dismisses at 12:08 PM and the East Campus dismisses at 12:48 PM.  Thanks in advance for your willingness to visit with your student's teachers and counselor. The time and energy that you commit to this process speaks volumes to your student and our faculty.

Eight Sign National Letters of Intent

 college signing
Eight Lake Park student athletes signed National Letters of Intent on the national signing day on this past Wednesday, February 6:

* Kaylee Flanagan, XC & Track & Field - University of Washington
* Maya Golliday, Track & Field - Cornell University
* Samantha Montalbano, XC & Track & Field - University of Wisconsin at Parkside
* Megan Lindbert, Soccer - Kent State University
* Danielle Jecmen, Softball - Bemidji State University
* Scott Filip, Track & Field - Rice University
* Kevin Teglia, Football - University of Indianapolis
* Vince Fallico, Football - Winona State University

This class of athletes features individual state champions, multiple-time all state athletes, 1st Team All State Athletes in team sports, members of teams that have had historic seasons in the annals of Lake Park athletics, delivering multiple state championships, first ever state team place finishes, sectional championships, regional championships, and conference championships, as well as individual school record holders that have established marks that future generations of Lancer athletes will aspire to.

But perhaps more impressive than all of these accolades is the example these athletes have set for the younger athletes in their respective programs through their work on the field of play, in the classroom, and in the hallways of Lake Park High School.  These athletes have led by example and have given our younger athletes goals that they will now work to achieve to continue the legacy of success they will leave behind as they transition into college.  Congratulations to each of these eight Lake Park athletes!  Their hard work, determination, and successes have brought honor to the entire Lake Park community.
LPHS Track and Field Coaches Honored

 track coaches
Jay Ivory, Bob Nihells, and Tom Kaberna, three members of the Lake Park boys track & field staff, were recently honored by the Illinois Track & Cross Country Association with state-wide awards.

Bob Nihells
Bob Nihells was honored with induction into the Illinois Track & Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame.  Bob has been on the coaching staff for all four of Lake Park's state track titles, first as the head coach in 1997, and as an assistant coach for the current run of three straight titles in 2010, 2011, and 2012.  During his tenure as a track coach at Lake Park, Bob's athletes have accumulated 13 individual IHSA state titles and 3 IHSA relay championships.  Bob has earned the reputation as one of the top shot put and discus throw coaches in the nation at any level, evidenced by the fact his Lake Park athletes currently rank 1st , 2nd, and 3rd on the Illinois All Time shot put record list, and 1st on the Illinois All Time Discus list.

Jay Ivory
Jay Ivory is the head coach of the Lake Park boys track and field team, which has captured three-consecutive state championships.  Jay was recently honored as the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Boys Class 3A Coach of the year for 2012.  As if this honor alone is impressive, this is the third consecutive year Jay has received this honor, also winning coach of the year honors in 2011, and 2010.  Every great organization needs a leader and Jay has done an outstanding job of directing an extremely talented program of not only athletes, but coaches during his tenure, making Lake Park one of the top programs not only in the state of Illinois, but the entire Midwest and nation.

Tom Kaberna
Tom Kaberna was honored by the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association as the 2012 Assistant Track Coach of the Year.  As a member of the state championships boys track & field staff for 2010, 2011, and 2012 Tom has been responsible for coaching the long and triple jumps during a period where Lake Park has dominated these events on a state and national level.  Tom has coached 2 IHSA event state champions and 8 IHSA All State Athletes, including 2011 Gatorade Illinois Athlete of the Year, Zach Ziemek.  Every Lake Park long and triple jump record has been broken during Tom's tenure as the horizontal jumps coach.  Tom is also the founder of the highly successful DuPage Track Club.

Community To Vote On Pool

At a special meeting of the Lake Park High School District 108 Board of Education on January 8, 2013, the board voted to approve going to referendum in the April 9, 2013 election to fund the construction of a pool and associated costs of operating a pool.

For the past twenty years, the issue of a pool has been a point of ongoing discussion within the community.  The Lake Park swim and dive teams have historically practiced at the College of DuPage, however due to a two-year renovation project at that site the practices were moved to Streamwood High School this past fall.  The facility rental and transportation costs are $40,000 annually.
Over the past year, a group of parents, students, and community representatives called People for a Pool has advocated for a pool based on student needs and community interest.  The Board of Education reviewed their request and approved a feasibility study last year, agreeing to pay up to $4,500 towards the cost of the study with People for a Pool and a grant from USA Swimming paying the balance of the $8,000 feasibility study.

Different options were reviewed and the Board has agreed to consider an 18,210 square foot facility which would include a an eight lane, 25-yard by 59-foot pool, a four lane warming pool and seating capacity for 350 people which would be built at Lake Park East Campus.  The four-foot deep warming/teaching pool was added to accommodate usage by the community for activities such as swim lessons and water aerobics.   The cost to construct this type of facility is $8 million and the annual total operating costs are expected to be approximately $380,000.

The Lake Park District 108 Board of Education believes it is important to involve our stakeholders in the future direction of constructing a pool at Lake Park.  As elected officials and stewards of the community, the Board remains committed to a balanced budget.  Given the District's finances and the significant costs associated with a pool, the most appropriate and responsible action in helping make a decision of this magnitude is to bring it to the taxpayers through a referendum on April 9, 2013.

If the referendum were to pass, an $8 million bond would be paid off over a 10-year period.   The total annual tax increase for the construction and operational costs will be $31.88 per household on a $300,000 home or $21.25 on a $200,000 home.

The following two propositions will be on the ballot:
1. Proposition to issue $8 million school building bonds:  "Shall the Board of Education of Lake Park Community High School District Number 108, DuPage County, Illinois, improve the site of and build and equip an indoor swimming pool addition to the Lake Park East Campus High School Building and issue bonds of said School District to the amount of $8,000,000 for the purpose of paying the costs thereof?"

2. Proposition to increase extension limitation for levy year 2013:  "Shall the extension limitation under the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law for Lake Park Community High School District Number 108, DuPage County, Illinois, be increased from the lesser of 5% or the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index over the prior levy year, to 3% for the 2013 levy year?"

For the 2013 levy year the approximate amount of the additional tax extendable against property containing a single family residence and having a fair market value at the time of the referendum of $100,000 is estimated to be $5.84.

At its January 28, 2013 regular meeting, the Lake Park High School Board of Education passed a resolution clarifying its position on what would happen with the construction of a pool at Lake Park if voters passed only one of its two referendum questions in the April 9 election.  The Board unanimously passed the following resolution, "In order to proceed with construction of the pool, the resolution for construction of the pool and the resolution for operational costs would both need to pass.  The Lake Park High School Board of Education would not accept the operational funds if the voters did not approve construction of the pool."  In order to proceed with construction of the pool, both questions on the referendum would need to pass.  The Lake Park High School Board of Education would not accept the operational funds for the pool if the voters did not approve the construction of it.
