      Lynne Panega 2012

I would like to take this opportunity to follow up with our families on the bomb threat incident which occurred on Wednesday.  We would like to thank the Roselle Police Department for their assistance and guidance during this stressful situation and recognize our staff for their supportive role in keeping our students safe.

Follow Up Confirmed Information:

* Hoffman Estates High School also received bomb threats Wednesday morning.

* There was a link between the threats to Lake Park H.S. and Hoffman Estates H.S.

* Four individuals (two adults and two minors) have been charged in Cook County.

* The investigation is continuing.  The Roselle Police Department is working with the DuPage County State's Attorney to obtain charges on all four of the individuals.

* Roselle Police Department has determined that a Lake Park student was involved in the incident and that student has been charged.  The student is not attending school at this time.

Response to Threat:

* LPHS communicated with parents throughout the situation on three occasions via phone and email.

* The safety of our students and staff was the foremost priority throughout the incident.  The Roselle Police Department advised us to initiate a soft lockdown until a preliminary search of the hallways, common areas, and perimeter of East Campus was completed.  Until the search was over and no dangerous devices were found, the safest place for students and staff was in the classrooms.  While immediate evacuation of the building may seem like a good response, it actually increases the danger level because bombs are often placed outside buildings or in common areas.

* Once the search of the exterior and common areas was completed, students were released in an orderly and staged exit and transported home.

* Students were required to leave their backpacks and personal items and a more detailed search of the building was conducted.

Although the threats were credible, we are thankful that this incident turned out to be a student hoax.  The Roselle Police were extremely complimentary of our staff, administration, and students.  While we are proud of our response, we are also using this as a learning opportunity to improve our internal and external procedures.  We have held debriefing sessions with both our crisis REDI team and the Roselle Police Department.

LPHS Named to AP Honor Roll

Lake Park High School is one of 539 schools districts across 44 of the 50 states in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 3rd Annual AP® District Honor Roll for simultaneously increasing access to Advanced Placement® course work while increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Achieving both of these goals is the ideal scenario for a district's AP program because it indicates that the district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit most from rigorous AP course work.

Since 2010, Lake Park High School has increased the number of students participating in AP by 37% (from 531 to 727) while improving the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher, the score typically needed to earn college credit, by 9% (from 76% in 2010 to 85% in 2012).  More than 90 percent of colleges and universities across the U.S. offer college credit, advanced placement or both for a score of 3 or above on an AP Exam - which can potentially save students and their families thousands of dollars in college tuition.

Lynne Panega, Superintendent of Lake Park High School District 108 stated, "We are honored to be named by the College Board to the AP District Honor Roll.  This achievement reflects the hard work and commitment of our AP teachers and students in producing a quality AP program.  Last year, Lake Park offered 21 AP courses in a variety of subject areas, including the AP Human Geography course for our freshmen."

"We applaud the extraordinary efforts of the devoted teachers and administrators in this district, who are fostering rigorous work worth doing. These educators have not only expanded student access to AP course work, but they have enabled more of their students to achieve on a college level-which is helping to create a strong college-going culture," said College Board President, David Coleman.

Inclusion on the 3rd Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on the examination of three years of AP data, from 2010 to 2012, for the following criteria:
Districts must:
* Increase participation/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts and at least 11 percent in small districts;
* Ensure that the percentage of African American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alaska Native students taking AP Exams did not decrease by more than 5 percent for large and medium districts or by more than 10 percent for small districts;
* Improve performance levels when comparing the percentage of students in 2012 scoring a 3 or higher to those in 2010, unless the district has already attained a performance level in which more than 70 percent of the AP students are scoring a 3 or higher.
