Principal's Column
Beginning on October 15 and lasting through the end of the month, both of our campuses will be focusing on Bullying Prevention Awareness. We are entering the second year of our efforts in this area and we will build upon our initial efforts to define bullying, heighten faculty and staff members' understanding, and to provide students with strategies to address these concerns.
Events that will be taking place throughout the month will include the following:
* Selling of anti-bullying wristbands in the student cafeterias. Students are encouraged to visibly demonstrate support of their peers by purchasing these $1 blue bands.
* Presenting of information toll students during their lunch hours. Meetings took place this week for all students during their SSP periods.
* Encouraging students to become part of a student-led group called Stand for the Silent. The mission of this group is to develop student leaders who can serve as positive role models and encourage their peers to treat each other with respect.
* Inspiring students to participate in the "Bullying Hurts Everyone" creative arts competition. Students can submit a poem, short story or essay that addresses this topic. These submissions are due by November 2.
* Launching of a hot link entitled "Stand Against Bullying" on the Lake Park homepage (www.lphs.org). Students and parents can access this link to leave information about bullying incidents and can provide information in an identified or anonymous format. Click here to view the link.
Because our students are young adults, our educational initiative is aimed towards fostering mature behavior. We are continuing to emphasize with students that they have a responsibility to be positive role models. We encourage them to be kind to one another and to report bullying when they experience or witness it.
Our parents are important partners in this bullying prevention awareness effort and we encourage you to talk to your students about the activities that are taking place this month at Lake Park High School.

LPHS Joins DuPage Valley Conference
We are pleased to announce that Lake Park has joined the eight-member DuPage Valley Conference (DVC). The Lake Park High School Board of Education voted to approve the DVC invitation on October 1. The move is scheduled for the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year. The opening in the DVC became available after the West Chicago High School Board of Education voted to move to the Metro Suburban Conference.
Lake Park was a member of the Upstate Eight Conference (UEC) for the past 33 years, joining that conference in 1979. Lake Park Athletic Director, Pete Schauer, stated, "We have nothing but the utmost respect for the administration, coaches, student-athletes, and communities of the Upstate Eight Conference and thank them for the outstanding partnership over the past 33 years." He added, "The DVC member schools are located within DuPage County; the closer proximity will allow Lake Park to develop more spirited rivalries when every school in the conference competes against each other year in and year out in every sport. Glenbard North High School, for example, is less than five miles from Lake Park and many of our student athletes know each other from youth sports."
The DVC member schools also offer programming that more closely parallels that offered by Lake Park High School. Lake Park offers a comprehensive athletic program with 27 sports that compete at 91 levels. The other DVC member schools offer a similar number of lower-levels within their programs. Additionally, the DVC offers a sport, boys gymnastics, as a conference sport, where currently, Lake Park is the only UEC school to offer a boys gymnastics program.

Sister Schools Visit Lake Park
Lake Park has felt like the United Nations this month as students and staff from Germany and Spain have visited. This past June, sixteen Lake Park juniors and seniors visited Spain with teachers Pia Klebosits and Megan Greenfield, marking the beginning of the LP Spanish exchange program. This fall, Lake Park has returned the hospitality and welcomed thirteen students and one teacher from Real Colegio Alfonso XII in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain. The group arrived on October 5 and will be with us until October 20. During their stay, the Spaniards have lived with Lake Park families.
In addition to the Spanish

group, Lake Park is marking over fifteen years of German exchanges with their largest group ever! Twenty-four students and two teachers arrived on October 8th and will be staying until October 26th. The Lake Park students, German teacher Julie Bausch, and another faculty member will then visit their partners in Hamburg, Germany at Helene Lange Gymnasium for three weeks next June. Senior Katie Conidi and her family are hosting exchange student Blanca Weiss. Katie shares, "It's really exciting to meet someone from across the world and to spend time with them. The cultures are very different, and I'm very much looking forward to visiting Germany this summer." In addition to practicing English, both the Germans and the Spaniards have attended classes at LP and experienced an American high school homecoming pep rally, football game and homecoming dance. They also participated in cultural trips to Chicago and area sites such as the Art Institute, Field Museum, Fermi Lab, and the University of Chicago.
Spanish exchange coordinator Megan Greenfield shared, "We look forward to building this relationship, as we offer this exchange program every other year to students enrolled in Spanish at Lake Park. It has been wonderful watching lifelong friendships grow!"
A special "thank you" to the LP families who have welcomed our visitors from Germany and Spain into their homes!

LP Presents Arthur Miller's The Crucible
 | Cast members of The Crucible invite you to watch their performances Nov. 1-3. |
Widely regarded as one of the best American plays, The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an ageless tale of fear, greed, and power written by one of the greatest American playwrights of all time. When teenage girls are discovered trying to conjure spirits, the 17th century town of Salem explodes with accusations of witchcraft. The vicious trials that follow expose a community paralyzed by terror, religious extremism and greed, and a marriage forever changed. A play that challenges our every notion of good and evil, The Crucible was originally written as a parable of 1950's McCarthyism: intolerance born out of fear, a human impulse that has repeated itself many times in world history. Lake Park High School has submitted The Crucible for consideration at the 2013 Illinois High School Theatre Festival hosted at University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in January. During the festival, over 4,000 other high school students and teachers from throughout the state attend workshops in various areas and aspects of theatre, meet with college reps, and view several full-length plays presented by various high schools from throughout the state of Illinois. The Lake Park High School drama department will present The Crucible on Thursday, November 1 at 7 pm; Friday, November 2 at 7:30 pm, and Saturday, November 3 at 7:30 pm in the East Campus Dice Auditorium. The play is performed with a cast of 24 students, representing freshman year through senior year. Some of the featured performers include: * Junior John Tasch as Reverend Samuel Parris * Senior Alyssa Kindell as Tituba * Junior Erla Teli as Abigail Williams * Junior Oksana Zurawel as Mary Warren * Junior Chris Sommers as John Proctor * Sophomore Lucas Bennett as Reverend John Hale * Senior Lillie Bennett as Elizabeth Proctor * Senior Danny Klinkner as Judge Hathorne * Junior Matt Solomon as Deputy Governor Danforth Tickets are $5 for adults; $3 for non-Lake Park students; and free for senior citizens, children under 13 and LP students. For more information, contact the lptheatreboxoffice@lphs.org. |
