Members and Friends:

25 Years... and counting!

As December comes to a close, so does our year of celebration. Throughout 2015, VBSR celebrated our 25th Anniversary, releasing a video, rolling out an updated logo (see above), throwing a huge party in Waitsfield, changing up our fall event model, and engaging in serious visioning for the future of the organization. We're just as excited for our 26th year as we were 25, and we are so glad to have you along for the ride.

Stepping into the new year, we were exited to announce VBSR's 2016 Legislative Agenda in front of a sold out crowd in Burlington on December 15th. (Thank you to everyone who attended, sponsored or tweeted about the event!) Our Board also weighed in on the dangerous immigration and refugee rhetoric that has been swirling around our country; we're grateful for their leadership on this important issue.

Finally, we are so happy to be heading into the new year with one more person in the VBSR office. Please give a warm welcome to our newest staff member, Lucie Kidd. As our Bookkeeper/Office Manager, Kidd will be our go-to for all things billing and office related and she is already making a huge impact in the office. Feel free to drop her a welcome email, or click here to learn more about Lucie or the rest of us on of YOUR staff at VBSR.

Thanks for all you do for VBSR and business in Vermont... we look forward to serving you in the new year!

People. Planet. Profit.

VBSR Policy Agenda Unveiled in Front of Packed House
New Positions Identified on Procurement, Carbon Tax, Ban the Box
More than 120 people attended VBSR's annual legislative breakfast Tuesday, December 15th. During the morning event, guests had a chance to eat breakfast, network, and hear about VBSR's State House priorities for 2016. The event was originally scheduled for Main Street Landing's Great Room, but was moved to the larger Black Box Theater due to high interest.

Members of VBSR's Public Policy Committee outlined the group's agenda, which includes incentives in state procurement for high road businesses, establishing a price on carbon pollution, reforming the state's health care system, passing an earned paid leave bill, and support for a proposal removing the criminal history question from job applications.

VBSR Board Releases Statement on Immigration and Diversity
Condemns Dangerous Anti--immigrant Rhetoric as Bad for Communities, Economy
On Thursday, December 10th, The VBSR Board of Directors released the following statement in response to political rhetoric surrounding immigration and diversity in the United States.

"Immigration enriches Vermont's communities and economy. Vermont should embrace immigrants and refugees fleeing war zones and condemn extreme rhetoric to restrict entry to the United States based on skin color or religion as fundamentally un-American. Our economic future exists not with the prejudicial politics and practices of the past, but with diverse workplaces that innovate freely and are free of discrimination.

As business people, we believe diverse pools of applicants allow businesses to hire the best and brightest - creating a more qualified workforce. Diversity also brings innovation and creativity to the workplace, allowing for new approaches to problem-solving and boosting productivity. Across the country, women and minority-owned businesses are driving economic growth by fulfilling American's entrepreneurial promise.

VBSR believes that diversity is an economic driver for Vermont. Welcoming residents from different backgrounds and experiences strengthens our communities and generates growth and new opportunities in our economy."

VBSR's position lives on the VBSR website (send the link to your friends!), was run by VTDigger and was included in the Rutland Herald's Capital Beat.

Vermont Electric Cooperative launches program to reduce carbon and costs in maple sugaring
Vermont Electric Cooperative (VEC) has announced a new incentive program to assist maple sugaring operations to move to a future of lower production costs and lower carbon emissions. VEC, with over 400 maple sugar producers in their service territory, is committed to identifying and assisting members that can benefit from fuel switching and emission reduction opportunities through new technology and customized solutions.

The ECOVAP is an electronic maple sugar evaporator that has total recovery of steam energy with no smoke or steam stack. It has very low energy consumption per gallon of syrup with 22 times less consumption of energy than an oil fired evaporator. An ECOVAP in operation at Maple Sugar Mountain in Belvidere VT has only had to use just over one kilowatt of electricity to boil each gallon of sap. The carbon offset from an equivalent propane or oil evaporator is roughly 30 tons of C02 emissions. This is the equivalent of about 80,000 highway miles driven, or taking 7 cars off the road.
