Note: Longfellow bridge construction scheduled to begin mid-July

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced that rehabilitation of the Longfellow Bridge, which connects Cambridge Street in Boston and Main Street in Cambridge, is scheduled  to begin mid-July

Image rendering from The Boston Globe, February 28, 2013, "Longfellow Bridge repairs, disruption to start in summer"

The project is expected to last three and a half years and is scheduled to finish in the fall of 2016. During construction, traffic will be closed in one direction; cars traveling to Cambridge will be detoured away from the bridge. Boston-bound traffic will be shifted on the bridge, as well as the MBTA Red Line tracks during the rehabilitation.

Pedestrian and bicycle travel will not be impacted during construction. Red line diversions are planned for 25 weekends during stage 1 from July 2013 to August 2014. See a graphic from MassDOT of the specific mode shifts on the bridge during stage 1 here.

To read details on the project plan, proposed work, and traffic management, visit the MassDOT web site here.

A public meeting will be held at MIT on July 10. Read details here.

Workout to Work Program

MONTHLY RAFFLE WINNER:

This month's winner of a $50 gift card is Mic of Fidelity Investments.

JUNE MILES SUBMISSION:

Workout to Work participants should submit June miles walked or biked as part of their commute by clicking here for a chance to win a gift card to REI or EMS.

Program note:

The Seaport TMA staff wants to let our current Workout to Work program participants know that the program will be phased out, with an ending date of August 2013.

We will instead focus our resources and programming on other areas and efforts which actively improve transportation within, to and from the South Boston Waterfront.

Closing raffles:

There are three more monthly raffles that will be drawn: from miles submitted for June, July, and August. Current Workout to Work participants should continue to submit miles for those months, with miles for August due the first week in September.

Biking and Walking in the South Boston Waterfront:

For any safety concerns regarding your biking/walking routes in the South Boston Waterfront, you can submit comments to us at info@seaporttma.org.

Bike commuters should consider registering, if not registered already, for the Seaport TMA's Bicycle Commuter Group, which meets quarterly for luncheons on topics of bike commuting.

Guaranteed Ride Home

Did you know that if you take transit, carpool, or bike to work you are eligible for the Seaport TMA's Guaranteed Ride Home program?

This service provides you with a free taxi ride home (includes fare and tip, suggested tip is 15%) if you have a personal emergency while at work. Participants are issued up to four vouchers each year upon submission of the confirmation report.

For more information and to register for Guaranteed Ride Home, click

here.

Reminder: Make sure to check the name of the taxi company on your voucher before you hail/call a taxi to ensure you use the correct taxicab company.
Carpool Program

Current Carpoolers: Please submit your carpooling report for the month of March by clicking here. Only one person per carpool should submit the report.

If you have already received the full amount of six gas cards, please continue to submit your reports as we occasionally offer raffles and other prizes.

Interested in carpooling? Find a match by browsing our carpool listings of people working in the South Boston Waterfront who are interested in sharing the ride to work. Remember to check this list regularly for other prospective carpoolers from your area. We will also contact you if we find a prospective carpool match from those submitted.

Share the ride to work and be rewarded with gas cards, reserved parking, and more.

You'll be matched with employees who work similar hours and live nearby, making carpooling convenient and easy. Choose when and how often you want to carpool. The more you share, the more you earn.
