Greetings!
|
This month marks Pink-Link's 7 year anniversary and my 9 year Cancerversary! We are celebrating by redesigning our website! We've been working hard on this for many months and the work continues. We're hoping to launch our new site within the next couple of months.
At the end of January, I attended a 1-day seminar on cancer and the work place. It was a very interesting day filled with a lot of great information to help fellow survivors and patients. I've posted a summary of what I learned on my blog. Please feel free to comment and let me know what decisions you made while in treatment and working. Was there anything in particular that helped you assimilate into the work place? Did you confide in a particular co-worker about your diagnosis? I'd love to hear your thoughts. (This seminar was held at the Cancer Support Community Benjamin Center in West Los Angeles. They're hosting an information session on Breast Reconstruction after Lumpectomy and Mastectomy on February 26th if you're interested).
The C4YW conference is held at the end of February every year. This conference is the only conference specifically geared for young breast cancer survivors. This year it's in Seattle, WA. I will be exhibiting at C4YW next year as this year, I will be attending the Annie Appleseed conference in West Palm Beach. Ann Fonfa, founder of the Annie Appleseed Project organizes an incredible conference filled with information about alternative cancer treatments and programs. I'd love to see you there, but just in case, watch for a blog post summarizing the conference. I hope you have a wonderful month! Stay healthy and empowered!

What is Chemo brain? "One day, I put my sneakers in the freezer, blanked out on my sister's birthday, and received a call from my son's school because I'd forgotten to pick him up," Suzanne, 35, recalls of her memory lapses during chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. Posit Science, a company located in Northern California, has created a brain training online software to help alleviate chemo brain.
Posit Science has generously donated 5 complimentary BrainHQ 5-year memberships. In order to enter our February contest, please send me an email and describe a "chemo brain" moment. I can't wait to read about how chemo has affected your brain! Posit Science has also agreed to donate a percentage of every sale to Pink-Link! If you'd like to purchase the online system, simply click on this link. By using the BrainHQ system, you may be able to harness your brain power once again!

Studying Breast Cancer Message Boards
|
In the first study to examine discussion of drug side effects on Internet message boards, researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania found that breast cancer survivors taking the commonly prescribed adjuvant therapy known as aromatase inhibitors (AIs) often detailed in these forums troublesome symptoms resulting from the drugs, and they were apt to report discontinuing the treatment or switching to a different drug in the same class. The findings are published in the journalPharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety .

| Battling Triple Negative Breast Cancer |
In research published in The Journal of Cell Biology, a team led by Susana Gonzalo, Ph.D., assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Saint Louis University, has discovered a molecular pathway that contributes to triple-negative breast cancer, an often deadly and treatment resistant form of cancer that tends to strike younger women. In addition, Gonzalo and her team identified vitamin D and some protease inhibitors as possible new therapies and discovered a set of three biomarkers that can help to identify patients who could benefit from the treatment.

| Controlling the Spread of Breast Cancer Cells |
With a desire to inhibit metastasis, Cornell biomedical engineers have found the natural switch between the body's inflammatory response and how malignant breast cancer cells use the bloodstream to spread. Their findings were published in the journal PLOS ONE. Pro-inflammatory signaling molecules in blood called cytokines constitute a "switch" that induces the mechanism by which breast cancer cells "roll" and adhere to the blood vessel surface. The cancer cells eventually stick to the vessel and infiltrate it.
