Here are some of the books we're loving lately. [Illustration by Chris Ames.]

Emily, our assistant manager and backlist buyer, is currently reading Alice Goffman's On the Run (University of Chicago Press):

"One of the most important books to come out this year. Goffman spent six years living in a  poor neighborhood in Philadelphia and witnessed first hand the effects of presumed criminality and omnipresent police presence. Read if you need more proof for why the war on drugs has failed."

"These are stories with a whole lot of heart. Purdy will make you laugh or he'll make you cry--no matter what he'll make you feel something. His characters are all slightly off in the best possible way. As John Waters says Purdy is like a drug one can never get enough of."
