Wowsa.  The first-ever California Bookstore Day was a smashing success.  We had hundreds of happy customers, young and old.  Our staff had a ball, thanks, in part, to the tasty IPA donated by Fort Point Beer Company.  Our visiting authors had a blast (and a mint julep or two).  And we heard from many other stores in CA that they had an epically fun and successful day, too.  So thanks to all you who joined the celebration!

We DO still have 10 of the 13 special Bookstore Day books and items for sale in the store, so if you missed something or couldn't make it in or need a truly unique Mother's Day gift, check them out here and call to check stock (415-387-2272).

In other news, the Clement Street Farmer's Market has expanded to three blocks to celebrate all the summer produce that's pouring in.  Good times.

In today's newsletter we offer:
  • a special offer to pre-order the new book by award-winning author-illustrator Gene Luen Yang;
  • author events galore, from Colson Whitehead to special evening with Sylvie Simmons and Stacey D'Erasmo.  Read on to plan your next few weeks of literary fun; and
  • our t-shirt contest winner

And remember: you can read digitally and shop locally.  Our partnership with Kobo allows you to read eBooks on any device (except Kindle).  Sign up here and Green Apple will forever get a cut of your eBook purchases.

The reading workshop is open to the public, and snacks and drinks will be provided. Don't miss the opportunity to hear the work of our future authors! The reading will take place at 7:00pm in our Granny Smith Room.

Tuesday, May 13: Kaui Hart Hemmings and Michelle Richmond

Litquake and Green Apple Books are proud to host the San Francisco launch of Kaui Hart Hemmings' highly anticipated new novel The Possibilities, at the Hotel Rex on Tuesday, May 13th at 7 p.m. She will be in conversation with Michelle Richmond, author of the new novel Golden State. Book sales and signings by both authors to follow.  More details.

Wednesday, May 14:  Nathan Deuel's Friday Was the Bomb

Join us here at 7 p.m. as we host Nathan Deuel.  He'll read from and sign his new book, Friday Was The Bomb: Five Years in the Middle East. In 2008, Nathan Deuel, a former editor at Rolling Stone and The Village Voice, and his wife, a National Public Radio foreign correspondent, moved to the deeply Islamic Kingdom of  Saudi Arabia to see for themselves what was happening in the Middle East. There they had a daughter, and later, while his wife filed reports from Baghdad and Syria, car bombs erupted and one night a firefight raged outside the family's apartment in Beirut. Their marriage strained, and they struggled with the decision to stay or go home. More about the book and author here.

Thursday, May 15: Colson Whitehead on The Noble Hustle

In another partnership between Litquake and Green Apple, we're thrilled to host the San Francisco launch of Colson Whitehead's latest, The Noble Hustle: Poker, Beef Jerky & Death, a hilarious satire of the author's adventures into the 2011 World Series of Poker. Mr. Whitehead will be in conversation with T. Geronimo Johnson at the Hotel Rex at 7pm.  More here

Both entertaining and harrowing, The Noble Hustle explores Colson Whitehead's adventures into the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. When Grantland magazine sends Whitehead to cover the World Series of Poker in 2011, the award-winning novelist realizes it is the assignment of a lifetime, except for one problem--he's never played in a casino tournament before. There begins the satirical account of a novelist and amateur poker player who trains in Atlantic City in six short weeks (while still picking up his child from school) and later snags a seat at the biggest card game in Vegas.

Friday, May 16: Writer and Performance Artist Scotch Wichmann

Please join us in the Granny Smith Room on May 16th at 7:00 p.m. as we host Scotch Wichmann while he reads from his new book, Two Performance Artists Kidnap Their Boss and Do Things with Him. Head over to his website to see what he's all about!

Hailing from Fresno, CA, Scotch Wichmann is a writer and performance artist, having launched himself into L.A.'s performance art scene in the early 1990s with his debut pieces, Snorting Mouse Fur and Having a Ball: One Testicle Puppet Show.  A regular feature at art galleries, fringe festivals, and comedy clubs, his performance troupe was nominated for Best Comedy at the 2013 Hollywood Fringe Festival. He and his wife live in Los Angeles, where he also writes and directs short films.

Sunday, May 18: Rebecca Gordon on Mainstreaming Torture

Please join Green Apple and St. James Episcopal Church in welcoming author Rebecca Gordon on Sunday, May 18th at 11:30am, as she reads from and discusses her new book, Mainstreaming Torture.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 reopened what many people in America had long assumed was a settled ethical question: Is torture ever morally permissible? Within days, some began to suggest that, in these new circumstances, the new answer was "yes." Rebecca Gordon argues that September 11 did not, as some have said, "change everything," and that institutionalized state torture remains as wrong today as it was on the day before those terrible attacks. Furthermore, U.S. practices during the "war on terror" are rooted in a history that began long before September 11, a history that includes both support for torture regimes abroad and the use of torture in American jails and prisons. Join us for an intense and thoughtful discussion.

NOTE: This event is at St. James (4620 California St at 8th Ave) at 11:30 am.

Wednesday, May 21 at the Make-Out Room: Stacey D'Erasmo and Sylvie Simmons

Gear up for a rockin' night at the Make Out Room, as Green Apple hosts the release party for author Stacey D'Erasmo's novel, Wonderland, on Wednesday, May 21 at 7:00pm.  She'll be in conversation with music writer Sylvie Simmons (her latest book was I'm Your Man: a Life of Leonard Cohen).

About Wonderland:  Anna Brundage is a rock star. She is tall and sexy, with a powerhouse voice and an unforgettable mane of red hair. She came out of nowhere, an immediate indie sensation. And then, life happened.  Anna went down as fast as she went up, and then walked off the scene for seven years. Without a record deal or clamoring fans, she sells a piece of her famous father's art to finance just one more album and a European comeback tour.  A riveting look at the life of a musician, Wonderland is a moving inquiry into the life of a woman on an unconventional path, wondering what happens next and what her passions might have cost her, seeking a version of herself she might recognize. It takes us deep into a world many of us have spent hours imagining and wishing ourselves into--now we have a bit of that wish come true.

NOTE: This event is at 7pm at the Make Out Room (3225 22nd Street).
