April's Book of the Month
Are you tempted to skip right to the details of the new store?  STOP!  This book is really remarkable.  In fact, two of the three Green Apple co-owners are nuts about this quirky, charming novel of the sea, as are some other indie booksellers we respect greatly.  And it's truly guaranteed to please or your money back.

I am not generally one to be drawn to novels that can be described as "magical" or "mystical," and especially not "feel-good," but all of those words can be applied to The Plover,  along with "salty," and even "brilliant." The Plover is the simple story of a man getting onto his little boat and heading out to sea to escape the world, but the world follows him out and keeps him company.  It is a beautiful novel filled with extraordinary characters who will carry you away on a journey of solitude, of mysticism and exploration.

Books like this don't come along very often, so dive in and enjoy each pleasant surprise.  --KPR

 Two Major Author Events
We at Green Apple are puffing our collective chest about the fact that we will be hosting readings by two very esteemed authors on back-to-back nights next week.

The great Robert Coover, a titan of American literature, will grace our humble Granny Smith room on April 23

The following night, the esteemed Joyce Maynard will launch the paperback of her newest novel (wine and snacks provided).  Please join us as literature comes to life.

Green Apple named PW's Bookstore of the Year
Green Apple is honored to be named Bookstore of the Year by Publishers Weekly

We are humbled by the award and the many congratulatory notes, and we thank first and foremost our stellar staff for all they do; they rock.

We also appreciate our industry supporters, from fellow booksellers who share ideas and inspiration, to the sales reps and publishing folks who keep the good books flowing.

This is (we hear) the first time a winning store has been nominated by a bookseller from another store, so we must give a shout-out to the gracious Sheryl Cotleur of Copperfield's Books (who also loves The Plover, by the way!).

Obviously we rely primarily on authors creating books worth reading, so we're grateful that despite all the recent disruption in publishing, so many smart, creative authors keep on writing.

And finally, we feel VERY strongly that this award really reflects upon on you, our customers.  You vote with your wallets every day, and each reader that drops in to buy a used pocketbook mystery, a new novel, a cookbook, some serious non-fiction, or a new vinyl record contributes to our continued success.

So thank you, Green Apple customers.   Thank you!
California Bookstore Day at Green Apple
There are just 17 days until the first California Bookstore Day, a statewide celebration of books and authors at 93 indie bookstores.  There will be thirteen books and art pieces ONLY for sale on May 3 at CA indies, Green Apple included.  Many are signed and/or numbered; all are unique to this day. They are here, and we're pretty sure there's something there you're going to want.  Quantities are limited, of course, so plan to come early if your heart is set on something. We may limit the quantity of each item one person may buy.

Beyond those unique gems, it's going to be a day-long celebration, with events and surprises throughout the day and evening.  Confirmed so far are:
  • tutors from 826 Valencia leading a Storytelling Workshop for kids (6-10 years old)--space limited, $5 tickets here
  • Dave Eggers, signing books and giving relationship advice;
  • Wendy MacNaughton and Lisa Brown, making custom bookmarks;
  • Beth Lisick and Jan Richman, leading a Local Author Scavenger Hunt;
  • artists with the Cartoon Art Museum doing caricatures in the noir style; and
  • a panel of McSweeney's editors and authors discussing Bookstories, their unique California Bookstore Day offering; and
  • The Sam Chase will be performing free live music.
  • the El Tonayense taco truck will be parked out front to feed your belly while Green Apple feeds your mind.

Please help spread the word!  Times and details here

Green Apple is opening a new store on 9th Avenue
Green Apple is thrilled to announce that we're opening up another bookstore on 9th Avenue in the Le Video building between Lincoln and Irving. The whole story is in today's SF Chronicle.

First, don't worry!  Le Video will continue, moving its operations to the mezzanine.  In fact, you can support this cultural institution here.  We'll occupy the ground floor in what we see as a symbiotic relationship.

We're humbled to be bringing a fine neighborhood bookstore to the vibrant Sunset.  While the space will be only a third of the size of Green Apple on Clement, it will be filled to the gills with the new and used books we think the neighborhood most wants (including plenty of books for young readers, of course).  And we will serve the 'hood humbly, adjusting our offerings as we learn from readers what they really want.

We are not crowd-funding this store, but if you are dying to help somehow, stay tuned to these emails and our Facebook page--we may seek shelving volunteers, leads on bookcases or bookcase builders, a good painter, etc.

Many details remain to be worked out, of course, and we're open to your ideas and suggestions.  We hope to open around August 1.

In the meanwhile, we hope to see you on Clement Street soon.
Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,
