The October Book of the Month!
The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida (Random House)

I picked up this book because I love David Mitchell, author of Cloud Atlas and more. When I started his introduction I had no idea just what I was in for.  Naoki Higashida is a 13 year old boy with autism. Although Naoki is unable to communicate verbally, his mother and teacher have devised a system that allows him to slowly form words and sentences that evolve into poems and stories - which resulted in The Reason I Jump. This is a heartfelt and touching account of Naoki trying to describe why he might react a certain way in different situations. That itself is pretty intense, but the beauty of this book lies in Naoki's understanding of and connection with nature. I can see why David Mitchell and his wife Ka Yoshida wanted to pass this book on to the English-speaking world, as it should be translated into every language. This book doesn't just open your eyes to what it is like to be be autistic but what it is like to be human. --Nick

You can buy the book on our site, as an eBook, or in the store.

Tuesday, October 15th @ 7pm: an evening of poetry with Alan Soldofsky and Jack Marshall

Please join us in our Granny Smith Room as we welcome poets Alan Soldofsky and Jack Marshall.

Alan Soldofsky's In the Buddha Factory is captivating and truthful. It is rich in detail, honest in tragedy, and poignant in observation. Through a mastery of style and language placed against the backdrop of Silicon Valley, Soldofsky explores the tension of opposites of place and no place, rich and poor, and finite and the limitless. Alan Soldofsky is a veteran of the San Francisco Bay Area poetry scene. He has been a contributing editor of Poetry Flash, and co-host of the popular poetry show "Planet on the Table" on Berkeley's KPFA radio.

Jack Marshall's  Spiral Trace is a treatise on aging which provokes a searing examination of a modern world defined by an eroding environment and hawkish, endless war. Offering a tribute to the insights gained in the dénouement of his life, this is beautifully minimalist poetry that shines a light on the possibilities of renewal by calling on art to provide "a wake-up to being."  Jack Marshall was born in Brooklyn to Jewish parents who emigrated from Iraq and Syria, He is the author of the memoir From Baghdad to Brooklyn and several poetry collections that have received the PEN Center USA Award, two Northern California Book Awards, and a nomination from the National Book Critics Circle.

Wednesday, October 16th @ 7:00 pm: look at the bright side with Allen Klein

Help us welcome award-winning professional speaker Allen Klein as he discusses his new book Always Look on the Bright Side: Celebrating Each Day to the Fullest.

We often think of celebrations as centering around special occasions, like birthdays, Christmas, or other holidays. But there's no need to wait for those times--every day is a cause for celebration. The very fact that you are alive, the wondrous world around you, and the special people in your life are all reasons to rejoice.

That's what this book is all about. It includes over 500 suggestions for living life to the fullest. A compendium of "glass half full" common sense, these witty and wise words from both the rich and famous, as well as the not-so-rich and the not-so-famous, will, I hope, inspire you to make every day a special day.

Thursday, October 17 @ 7pm: poet Brian Komei Dempster

Brian Komei Dempster appears in our Granny Smith Room to read from and discuss his new book Topaz.   Along with Dempster, several former camp prisoners and second-generation Nisei writers--Florence Ohmura Dobashi and Michi Tashiro--will present their first-person stories from Dempster's edited anthologies: From Our Side of the Fence:  Growing Up in America's Concentration Camps (Kearny Street Workshop, 2001) and Making Home from War:  Stories of Japanese American Exile and Resettlement.

Topaz, Brian Komei Dempster's debut poetry collection, examines the experiences of a Japanese American family separated and incarcerated in American World War II prison camps. This volume delves into the lasting intergenerational impact of imprisonment and breaks a cultural legacy of silence. Through the fractured lenses of past and present, personal and collective, the speaker seeks to piece together the facets of his own identity and to shed light on a buried history. Dempster's edited anthologies gather first-person memoirs of Japanese American wartime incarceration and post-war resettlement.

Tuesday, October 22 @ 7pm: author Avi Tuschman

Join us in the Granny Smith Room as Dr. Avi Tuschman presents his new book Our Political Nature: The Evolutionary Origins of What Divides Us.

Our Political Nature is the first book to reveal the hidden roots of our most deeply held moral values. It shows how political orientations across space and time arise from three clusters of measurable personality traits. These clusters entail opposing attitudes toward tribalism, inequality, and differing perceptions of human nature. Together, these traits are by far the most powerful cause of left-right voting, even leading people to regularly vote against their economic interests.  More here

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,
