The September Book of the Month!
Cool Gray City of Love: 49 Views of San Francisco by Gary Kamiya (Bloomsbury)

There have been many histories written about the transformation of San FraAdd a Cool Gray City of Lovencisco from a muddy hamlet of 800 people in 1848 into one of the world's great metropolises.  What makes this one special is Kamiya's synthesizing of the personal memoir with a walking tour of the historic, the geographic and the geologic, all rolled together in a witty and accessible style.  Kamiya not only obviously spent countless hours deep in the library stacks doing diligent research, but he must also have worn out several pairs of shoes walking the far-flung corners, alleys, dirt paths and hills of San Francisco.  Along the way he points out the little remnants of the past--buried stream beds and old trails that became our modern roads; local characters past and present;  spots where the old has been replaced by the new without being completely erased. Even if you think you know all you need to about this cool gray city of love, Gary Kamiya will surprise you with his passionate mash note to the city of San Francisco. ---KPR

You can buy the book on our site, as an eBook, or in the store.

Sunday, September 8 @ 6:30pm: Amy G, Giants reporter

San Francisco Giants in-game reporter Amy G will be at the store after the Giants game to read from her delightful new children's book, Smarty Marty's Got Game.

Amy's first book tells the inspiring story of Marty, who teaches her younger brother, Mikey, all about baseball. Featuring Adam McCauley's beautiful baseball illustrations, Smarty Marty's Got Game will appeal to both boys and girls while also defying the strong gender stereotypes that Amy herself has battled in her 16-year career as a sports journalist and reporter.

For a preview of the book, check out this video trailer on YouTube.

Tuesday, September 10 @ 5pm: Gene Luen Yang book release party

Yang.jpg Green Apple is excited to welcome local author and illustrator Gene Luen Yang for the release of his new graphic novels Boxers & Saints.  Gene will be in-store signing and sketching for all his fans.

In two volumes, Boxers and Saints (First Second) tell parallel stories in two books. The first is of Little Bao, a Chinese peasant boy whose village is abused and plundered by Westerners claiming the role of missionaries. In the second volume, Yang lays out the opposite side of the conflict. A girl whose village has no place for her is taken in by Christian missionaries and finds, for the first time, a home with them.

Join us here at the store to celebrate the launch of these two fine books.

Wednesday, September 11th @ 7:00pm: author Carl Hayes

Join us in our Granny Smith Room as we welcome local author Carl Hayes reading from his memoir, Loaded Stories: Memories and Tales of Fathers, 1970s California, and Other Complications. It's a good thing children are resilient. San Francisco authoCarl Hayesr Carl Hayes tours his California childhood and attempts to understand the secret histories of his two fathers, the first shot and killed while hitchhiking in Tennessee, the second a hard-partying outlaw immersed in the general mayhem of post-Manson Family Los Angeles. Lurching from psychedelic gun-packed nightmares to mountain-top "Partridge Family" harmonies, a unique family history shaped by the raucous '70s is explored in this compelling personal essay.

Thursday, September 12 @ 7pm: author Patricia Engel

null Please join us at the store as Patricia Engel reads from and discusses her new novel It's Not Love, It's Just Paris.

Patricia Engel's story collection, Vida--a New York Times Notable Book and finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award--established her as one of our country's best young writers. Her first novel is a vibrant, wistful narrative about an American girl in Paris, who navigates the intoxicating and treacherous complexities of independence, friendship, and romance.

Lita del Cielo, the daughter of two Colombian orphans who arrived in America with nothing and made a fortune with their Latin food empire, has been granted one year to pursue her studies in Paris before she must return to work in the family business. She moves into a gently crumbling Left Bank mansion known as "The House of Stars," where a spirited but bedridden Countess Séraphine rents out rooms to young women visiting Paris to work, study, and, unofficially, to find love.

Thursday, September 12 @ 6:30 pm at Sports Basement (Presidio): runner and author Ed Ayres
null
Join us at Sports Basement to welcome long distance runner Ed Ayres as he reads from and discusses his new memoir The Longest Race: A Lifelong Runner, an Iconic Ultramarathon, and the Case for Human Endurance.

Among endurance runners, there are those who have run very long distances, and then there are those who have run very long distances for a very long time. Ed Ayres exemplifies the latter; having run in over 600 races across fifty-five years, he is arguably the most experienced American distance runner still competing today. A book no one else could have written, The Longest Race is his urgent exploration of the connection between individual endurance and a sustainable society.

Monday, September 16 @ 7pm at the Hotel Rex: a Litquake event with Christina Garcia

null Join Green Apple Books and our pals at Litquake at the Hotel Rex as we host the San Francisco launch of Cristina Garcia's new novel: King of Cuba.

Told with wry wit and keen insight, this entertaining and richly satisfying story, about a fictionalized Fidel Castro and an octogenarian Cuban exile obsessed with seeking revenge against the dictator, is the newest from the National Book Award finalist and author of Dreaming in Cuban. García will be in conversation with Oscar Villalon from Zyzzyva.

l Comandante, an aging Castro-like dictator shambles about his mansion in Havana, visits a dying friend, tortures hunger strikers in one of his prisons, and grapples with the stale end of his life that is as devoid of grandeur as his nearly sixty-year-old revolution. Across the waters in Florida, Goyo Herrera, a Miami exile in his eighties, plots revenge against his longtime enemy-the very same El Comandante-whom he blames for stealing his beloved, ruining his homeland, and taking his father's life.

Monday, September 23 @ 7pm: author Peter Carlson

null Do you remember our video for our Book-of-the-MonthK Blows Top? Well, join us in the Granny Smith Room as we welcome Peter Carlson.  He'll read from and discuss his new book Junius and Albert's Adventures in the Confederacy: A Civil War Odyssey.

Junius Browne and Albert Richardson covered the Civil War for the New York Tribune until Confederates captured them as they tried to sneak past Vicksburg on a hay barge. Shuffled from one Rebel prison to another, they escaped and trekked across the snow-covered Appalachians with the help of slaves and pro-Union bushwhackers. Their amazing, long-forgotten odyssey is one of the great escape stories in American history, packed with drama, courage, horrors and heroics, plus moments of antic comedy.

"Another irresistible story, engagingly told, from the pen of irresistible storyteller Peter Carlson. As with the best of non-fiction, it reads like a far-fetched novel." --Christopher Buckley

Tuesday, September 24 @ 7pm at the JCC: author Robin Sloan (ticketed)

null

Ok. This isn't a Green Apple event, per se.  But our pals at the JCC asked us to help spread the word and, given how many scores of copies of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore we sold in-store, many of you will be interested.

Join us for an evening with Robin Sloan, a former Twitter exec and author of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, an exhilarating tale of global conspiracy, high tech, complex code-breaking, young love, and rollicking adventure--mostly set in a hole-in-the-wall San Francisco bookstore. This 21st century literary adventure has become one of the most talked-about debut novels of the past year.

Details & tickets here.  Mention Green Apple Books during check-out and you'll receive the discounted member price!

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,
