Greetings!
|
As our 46th summer on Clement fades away, we're looking forward to fall, the season of big-name new releases, calendars, and plenty of sunshine.
In today's newsletter we present seven new books we think you'll like. And this:
- a writer we know is looking for a quiet person to share an office above Green Apple's annex;
- in-store events from Saturday morning kids book readings to Amy G approach; and
- you have one last chance to pre-order personalized Gene Luen Yang books.
And please help spread the word to your e-reading buddies that there is local option to replace, um, that major online eBook peddler: Us! Our partnership with Kobo allows you to read eBooks on any device (except Kindle). Sign up here and Green Apple will forever get half of the profits from your eBook purchases, thus helping ensure our continued presence on Clement Street.

New Books We Think You'll Like | |
The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara (Doubleday)
It's not every day that a debut novelist earns comparisons to Barbara Kingsolver and Ann Patchett, but that rare feat is just what Hanya Yanagihara has accomplished with her sweeping page-turner, The People in the Trees. This good old-fashioned novel will lure you not only with its exotic location--a remote Pacific island--but also with its gripping mystery. {eBook

Abominable Science!: Origins of the Yeti, Nessie, and Other Famous Cryptids by Daniel Loxton (Columbia U Press)
Though a scientist, Loxton is clearly a sympathizer to the cryptozoological quest. His cold examination of the evidence reveals the vagaries of human perception, the influence of larger forces such as monster movies and dinosaur exhibits, and a LOT of fakery. Get at the root of your favorite cryptid!
The Believer Box of Bad Advice by editors of the Believer (Potter Style)
Printed on this little box is a description that is bound to intrigue those among you who are fans of potentially tasteless games: "A Card Game of Horrible Advice from Your Favorite Comedians." Including contributions from Amy Sedaris, Patton Oswalt, Aziz Ansari, Samantha Bee and others, this is Cards Against Humanity for the Believer/McSweeney's set.
Tamalpais Walking: Poetry, History and Prints by Gary Snyder and Tom Killion (Heyday)
One of the most beautiful books about the Bay Area finally has a second life in this just released paperback edition. Collaborators Gary Snyder and Tom Killion, whose signature woodcuts have never looked better, offer a sweeping yet personal history of Mt. Tam, one of our local treasures.
The Infatuations by Javier Marais (Knopf)
Javier Marias returns! If you've never read the (fingers crossed, bets placed) future Nobel Prize winner, here is your chance to be seduced. As much a meditation on the contingency of attraction and love as a murder mystery, Marias' latest will prove yet again his mastery. { eBook $13.99}
Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief by Lawrence Wright (Knopf)
OK. I'm admittedly late to the party on this one (it came out in January), but it's no more or less timely now, and it's endlessly fascinating. Pulitzer Prize winner Wright (The Looming Tower) sets out to answer "How can seemingly rational people subscribe to beliefs that others find incomprehensible?" The exploration is entertaining, shocking, scary, and insightful. {eBook $12.99}
Night Film by Marisha Pessl (Random House)
This is a wild romp of a literary thriller. A journalist investigates a fishy "suicide" and gets ever-closer to victim's mysterious cult-filmmaker father. It's beautifully written, evocative, and there's suspense on every page. Green Apple co-owner Kevin Hunsanger personally vouches for this one!

San Francisco Giants in-game reporter Amy G will be at the store on Sunday, September 8 at 6:30pm to read from her delightful new children's book, Smarty Marty's Got Game.
Amy G's first book tells the inspiring story of Marty, who teaches her younger brother, Mikey, all about baseball. Featuring Adam McCauley's beautiful baseball illustrations, Smarty Marty's Got Game will appeal to both boys and girls while also defying the strong gender stereotypes that Amy herself has battled in her 16-year career as a sports journalist and reporter.
Can't make it that evening? Pre-order the book here and we'll get the book inscribed, then hold it for pick-up or ship it to you.
For a preview of the book, check out this video trailer on Youtube.

On September 10th at 5:00pm, Green Apple Books is excited to welcome local author and illustrator Gene Luen Yang for the release of his new graphic novels Boxers & Saints. Gene will be in-store signing and sketching for all his fans. You can also pre-order (see below!).
In two volumes, Boxers & Saints (First Second) tells two parallel stories in two books. The first is of Little Bao, a Chinese peasant boy whose village is abused and plundered by Westerners claiming the role of missionaries. In the second volume, Yang lays out the opposite side of the conflict. A girl whose village has no place for her is taken in by Christian missionaries and finds, for the first time, a home with them.
Gene Luen Yang began drawing comic books in the fifth grade. He has written and drawn a number of titles, including Duncan's Kingdom, The Rosary Comic Book, Prime Baby and Animal Crackers. American Born Chinese, his first graphic novel from First Second, was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award and an Eisner Award. He also won an Eisner for The Eternal Smile, a collaboration with Derek Kirk Kim. Recently, he has been working on the New York Times Best-Selling comics series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Pre-Order Signed Gene Luen Yang
|
Green Apple is pleased to be the only bookstore in the country (woot woot!) where you can pre-order signed or inscribed copies of the forthcoming Boxers & Saints by local-boy-made-good Gene Luen Yang. He wrote American Born Chinese, the first graphic novel to be nominated for the National Book Award and the first to win the ALA's Printz award.
Dave Eggers called these books "A masterful work of historical fiction that happens to be in the form of a graphic novel, and a very accessible view into a complicated moment in Chinese history."
Order one or all by noon on Wednesday, September 4. Gene will draw a sketch and sign/personalize your book(s), then you can pick them up here or we'll ship anywhere.
