Greetings!
As our 46th summer on Clement nears its end, we've been thrilled to see some new faces.  Is it the farmer's market?  The recovering economy?  Our lively Facebook page?  More tourists?  The relentless fog?

We never know what brings people into Green Apple on some days more than others, but we're grateful to each of you.  And if you haven't been in lately, drop by soon.  The books are always changing, but the dust smells the same!

Help Create California Bookstore Day!
California Bookstore DayHave you heard of Record Store Day?  It's a single day each year when fans line up before opening at local record stores for a chance at only-on-Record-Store-Day recordings. It's awesome, and we think book lovers deserve Bookstore Day

So in May, Green Apple and the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association went to New York to meet with publishers.  Would they be willing to create one-of-a-kind books and word-based items by big-name authors to be sold exclusively in indie bookshops?  Yes, they said.

So it's on, but we need help.

We've teamed up with Southern California bookstores to create California Bookstore Day (May 3, 2014), and we've hired a fantastic writer, editor and former bookseller to produce the event.  It's a huge job to create something like this from scratch: she'll co-ordinate with publishers; run a committee of booksellers to curate the books; create a website; publicize the event; and more.

So we've launched an IndieGoGo campaign to raise the funds.  We're off to a good start, but we really need your support.  We hope you can give, and we hope you can help spread the word to your book-loving pals.   Just 100 Green Apple fans donating $25 each gets us that much closer to the goal! Are you in?

Please give here, and spread the word!

The Book of the Month!
The Invention of Murder: How the Victorians Revelled in Death and Detection and Invented Modern Crime by Judith Flanders (Thomas Dunne Books)
Invention of Murder
Each month, we present a book so beloved that we guarantee it 100% or your money back.  This month's pick may not be for everyone, but if you're at all intrigued, buy it now and thanks us later!  Though the subtitle says it all, here's Martin's blurb to boot:

This book is not about the invention of murder so much as the sensationalizing of crime in Victorian England.  Flanders retells gruesome stories of many different types of murder, both famous and obscure: from Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd to Burke and Hare's body-snatching business in Edinburgh.  The British loved murder. Not the actual act itself, but the telling: You'll see murders through multiple editions of newspapers hawked on the streets, bestselling novels, stage plays, musicals, and even puppet shows.  Not to mention the birth of the detective novel. If you think that obsession with and media saturation of murder is a modern phenomenon (Hello Nancy Grace), get ready to have your mind changed. With an irresistible cast of swindlers, forgers, poisoners, the mad, the bad and the utterly dangerous, The Invention of Murder is both a mesmerizing tale of crime and punishment, and history at its most readable.

You can buy the book on our site, as an eBook, or in the store

Bad-ass swimmer Lynne Cox at two locations!

Open Water Swimming
Thursday, August 15 @7pm @ Sports Basement (Presidio) OR
Friday, August 16 @ 6pm @ the mighty South End Rowing Club

She'll discuss her new book Open Water Swimming Manual: An Expert's Survival Guide for Triathletes and Open Water Swimmers.

Join us at either of these locations in welcoming a hero of the aquatic realm--Lynne Cox.

Lynne Cox has set open water swimming records across the world, and now she has focused her decades-long experience and expertise into this definitive guide to swimming. Cox methodically addresses what is needed to succeed at and enjoy open water swimming, including choosing the right bathing suit and sunscreen; surviving in dangerous weather conditions, currents, and waves; confronting various marine organisms; treating ailments, such as being stung or bitten, and much more. Cox calls upon Navy SEAL training materials and instructors' knowledge of open water swimming and safety procedures to guide her research. In addition, first-hand anecdotes from SEAL specialists and stories of Cox's own experiences serve as both warnings and proper practices to adopt.

Even if you're just wondering what it's like to swim in Antarctica, we promise a fascinating evening for any aquatic mammal.

Friday, August 16 @ 7pm: Jeff Guinn's Manson: The Life and Times of Charles Manson

Manson We look forward to welcoming Jeff Guinn to our Granny Smith Room as he presents his new biography Manson: The Life and Times of Charles Manson. This is the most authoritative account ever written of how an ordinary juvenile delinquent named Charles Manson became the notorious murderer whose crimes still shock and horrify us today. Manson puts the killer in the context of his times, the turbulent late sixties, an era of race riots and street protests when authority in all its forms was under siege. Guinn shows us how Manson created and refined his message to fit the times, persuading confused young women (and a few men) that he had the solutions to their problems. At the same time he used them to pursue his long-standing musical ambitions, relocating to Los Angeles in search of a recording contract. His frustrated ambitions, combined with his bizarre race-war obsession, would have lethal consequences as he convinced his followers to commit heinous murders on successive nights.
