July's Book of the Month

Our July Book of the Month, guaranteed to please, is Dreadful (not a typo!).  Here's Kevin Davis' "shelf talker."

  Dreadful

Dreadful is a thoroughly researched, sympathetic portrayal of a talented, mercurial, heavy-drinking, and ultimately tragic novelist who wrote one important book.

John Horne Burns's 1947 masterpiece--The Gallery--was praised by every critic and WWII novelist--Hemingway, Michener, Vidal.  It was a revelation at the time, illustrating the confrontation between often obtuse US soldiers and the citizens of Naples. One landmark (at the time) chapter illustrates the personalities of a Napoli gay bar frequented by gay soldiers.

Margolick's scholarship, aided by Burns's prodigious correspondence, will make you cringe at how many wrong decisions one man can make--literary success for Burns was followed by burning bridges with critics, his peers, and his day job, then followed by self-immolation through alcoholism just shy of his 37th birthday.

This re-examination of Burns and The Gallery is especially prescient today in light of new research around American GI's treatment of Europeans in the months following V-day.  John Horne Burns and his landmark novel deserve this valuable book.

In brief, here's what we have cooked up so far for July: Billionaire

On Friday, July 5th from 5pm to 7pm, Green Apple Books and Sports Basement are delighted to host Julian Guthrie (SF Chronicle reporter) for a happy hour, book signing and meet & greet with Oracle Racing Team members. Join us as Guthrie shares from her book, The Billionaire and the Mechanic opening weekend of the America's Cup Race. Thanks to exclusive access to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison over more than a year, Julian tells the dramatic true story of a decade-long quest to win the America's Cup, the oldest trophy in international sports and sailing's greatest prize.  She tells of the colorful history of the America's Cup, the behind-the-scenes technology and material science, and the human story of the builders, engineers, and sailors who make it happen. At Sports Basement's Presidio store!

  Read Questlove
Mo' Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and Ben Greenman (Grand Central)

Mo' Meta Blues Questlove's memoir is more than just a history of one of the best hip-hop groups around--The Roots. He possesses an unbelievable wealth of knowledge about the history and business of music, ranging from the birth of hip-hop to the cultural evolution of African Americans in mainstream music. Beyond his knowledge, he also possesses a true passion for making and listening to music despite the hardships he faced while growing in the business.

Questlove writes as if he's still in awe over the revolutionary music from 30-40 years ago - including Prince's 1999 and when Stevie Wonder introduced the world to sampling while guest starring on The Cosby Show.

Throughout the memoir, he chronicles the albums that defined different ups and downs of his life. All the while, his humorous and candid writing makes him a lovable and inspiring character in the mean music world. Every aspiring musician should read this book!  --Ronnie         (the eBook is $12.99 here

Miss Katie Bondy, bookseller

1. What do you do at the store?

I am what is fondly referred to at Green Apple as a "new books person" (unless the phrase is being uttered by a "used books person," in which case one might detect just the tiniest hint of spite...just kidding, we all love each other). This means that I am primarily responsible for the new books in the store---shelving them, returning them, keeping them organized and well-displayed in their sections (particularly the spirituality, religion, photography, crafts, and art technique sections, which I have most control over). I also import all the new book orders into our system---so yes, I am the first (well, I guess technically second) person to know when your favorite bestseller is coming out in paperback. Mostly, though, I spend my days manning the register, answering the phone, and running around the store, helping customers and lugging heavy boxes of books.

2. What's your favorite section?
I would say that Fiction is my favorite section, but I am never in the Annex and therefore don't feel that I've really developed a close relationship with it. Therefore, my favorite sections to spend time in are Poetry and Philosophy (which are, coincidentally, the hardest sections to shelve in, as they are always jam-packed with books that we can't bear to part ways with, even if they're not selling). I often wish I was reading all the books on our Buyer's Choice display, but, admittedly, rarely am.

3. What are you reading now?
I just finished Bluets by Maggie Nelson (which everyone needs to read immediately) and Pastoralia by George Saunders and am almost done re-reading The Pleasure of the Text by Roland Barthes. I'm kind of at a crossroads in terms of deciding what to read next---I'm pretty sure it's either going to be The Hamlet by William Faulkner or The Rings of Saturn by W.G. Sebald (or, as an interesting experiment, both at the same time).

4. What was it like starring in a Green Apple production?
It was pretty much life-changing, although I fear that the paparazzi and my adoring fans have been a bit of a distraction at work. If grad school doesn't work out and Green Apple won't hire me back, I'm planning on moving to Hollywood and making it big on the silver screen.
Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,
