March's Book of the Month (+ author event!)
Schroder by Amity Gaige (Twelve)

Our March Book of the Month, guaranteed to please, is the novel Schroder by Amity Gaige  It's the perfect blend of page-turner and literary novel, and here's Pete's shelf talker:

Schroder

Reader, meet your next book club book.  Schroder has a clear hook: Eric Schroder (who has gone by Eric Kennedy since his youth trying to fit in as an immigrant), has kidnapped his six-year-old daughter during a parental visit.  It's a week on the road and on the lam.  Beyond the compelling hook, though, this novel explores all kinds of complexity: what it means to be a good parent; what makes us "American;" and so on.  Schroder is both a page-turner and a lyrical meditation on parental love.  Both of Gaige's previous books have been Green Apple favorites, but now she has really hit her stride with this triumph of voice.  -- Pete

Still don't believe you need to read this novel?  See the rave reviews in the NY Times, LA Times, or Kirkus.

BONUS: Buy the book, save the date, and get your questions ready, as Amity Gaige will be visiting Green Apple on March 21 at 7pm.

March 9: Live Music by Essence Essence

Local singer/songwriter essence, who performed at Green Apple in December along with one of our favorite dogs, will be back for an encore Saturday, March 9 at 11am.

The songwriter started composing songs to motivate and liven up her son's daily routine (with titles like "Gotta Wear Clothes," "Let's Make a Pizza" and "Everybody Has a Butt"), and soon these songs blossomed into a full-blown album. The album title ("A Dog Named Moo") refers their absolutely enormous and sweet dog (you can't miss him when he's in the store). Join us on the mezzanine for what promises to be a fun time for the whole family!

March 23: Book of the Month author Amity Gaige

It's not every month that we get to host our current "Book of the Month" author, so we're super-excited to have Amity Gaige coming to the store on Thursday, March 21st at 7pm to read from her latest novel, Schroder. Inspired in part by the fascinating real life con artist Christian Gerhartsreiter (aka Clark Rockerfeller), Gaige's third novel is riveting and full of humanity.  See above for Pete's blurb.  Thursday, March 21 at 7pm here at Green Apple.

March 28: Nomadic Matt on How to Travel the World on $50 a Day
How To Travel

Despite not having traveled abroad until he was 23, Matt Kepnes decided to quit his job and travel the world. Several years and countries later, he's picked up a lot of tips on how to travel more creatively, cheaply, and longer. His blog, which draws hundreds of thousands of readers a month, has been featured on CNN, the New York Times, Huffington Post, BBC, and more. To say we're excited to be hosting him on Thursday, March 28th at 7pm for a discussion of his new book, How to Travel the World on $50 a Day, would be a bit of an understatement. Meaning: we'll be there with pens and notebooks in hand as Matt offers advice and answers your questions about pertinent issues like

  • Avoiding bank fees
  • Finding cheap airfare
  • How to teach overseas
  • And much more

March 30: Angela Dominguez, author of Let's Go, Hugo!

  Let's Go Hugo

Here are two facts about Hugo, the dapper and charming hero of Angela Dominguez's illustrated story, Let's Go, Hugo!  First, he adores the Eiffel Tower. Second, despite being a bird, he's never been to the top. Why? Because he's never gotten two feet off the ground. Until he meets Lulu, who sets out to change things. . . .

Join us on March 30 at 11am for a Saturday morning storytime with local author/illustrator Angela Dominguez, to find out just what Hugo gets up to. (Or, since we don't want to ruin the surprise, not up to.)

Meet Your Bookseller!
Curious about the booksellers behind all those handwritten recommendations? "Three Short Questions for a Green Apple Bookseller" will introduce you to our staff.

This week, Danielle.
Danielle
1. What do you do at the store?

I'm the merchandise and card buyer for the store, which means I get to pick out the quirky and fun toys, games, and other items that don't involve books around the store.  I also get the pleasure of curating our card selection, which makes for a very fun job.  I also make some of the signs in the store.  If you see anything on it with a bunny somewhere hidden, that's my work.

2. What's your favorite section?

The card racks.  I know it's not books, but I love putting the cards up, and there is a method to the madness in it.  I put my favorites on the front rack or the upstairs main rack.  If I were to pick another favorite part of the store it would be the store's massive art wall; it's so pretty to look at.

3. What are you reading now?

I know its an oldie, but I'm reading Fellowship of the Ring for the first time.  I tried reading it when I was in junior high and couldn't quite get into it.  I'm quite engrossed in it.  Next I will probably have to dive into the Silmarillion just to finish my Tolkien odyssey.
Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,
