Pyle-  What does Mr. Heffner always say you should do before leaving for vacation? Turn the water off to the house, right?

Even though cold temperatures and snow may still be in the forecast, it is officially Spring and I for one couldn't be happier. My hope is you survived all of the snow and sub-zero temperatures and may be headed to a warmer part of the country soon.

Here are some things to consider for your home Spring checklist:

1.  Make sure that you have a rider on your homeowner's insurance policy for sump pump failure. If you're not sure whether or not you have this coverage, call your insurance agent and find out.

2.  How old is your sump pump? If it is more than 5 years old, consider replacing this unless you have a battery back-up system. With a back-up system, one option is to run the primary pump until it dies to get the most bang for your buck. Not my recommendation, but there is some logic to this.

3.  If you have a lead/acid battery for your sump pump battery back-up system, checking the water level annually and adding distilled water as needed will give you the most life out of the battery.

4.  Flush your water heater only if this is something that you have been doing before, even if you have a water softener. If you have never flushed your water heater, trying to do so after several years of use could do more harm than good.

5.  Even with the garden hoses disconnected over the winter, I have seen hose bibbs freeze and split and either flood the house or the crawlspace. When you first turn on your hose bibb, make sure that someone is inside to listen and ensure that the house is not flooding.

A First Step or Taking Sump Pump Protection To The Next Level

The PitBoss is 21st Century technology at its best. Utilizing existing cellular service (it doesn't matter what carrier it is), the PitBoss can send text messages to 3 different phones when there's a problem. The cost of the installation covers the first year of cellular service and the annual cost after that is $30.00. The installed price starts at $375.00, but the cost can vary depending on the installation.

So whether you don't have a battery back-up sump pump and this is a first step toward that goal or if you want to take sump protection to the next level, the PitBoss is the answer.

Pro Series 2400 Battery Back-up Sump Pump System

The Pro Series 2400 back-up system is tried and true. I have installed close to 100 of these since starting in business over 13 years ago. This comes with a computerized control panel with a built-in battery charger, a 12 volt battery specifically designed for this system and a pump that is rated to pump 2400 gallons of water per hour. The pump can run on either AC or DC power with the control panel automatically adjusting demand as needed. If the battery is used, the control panel will recharge the battery once AC power has been restored.

Installed pricing starts at $1625.00.

The unit comes with a 3 year warranty on the control panel and pump and a 1 year warranty on the battery.

Perhaps a little early yet, but Happy Easter!

Best wishes,
