Greetings!

At the time of this writing, the National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning from 1:00 AM to 7:00 PM for Wednesday, December 26, 2012. Current snowfall predictions for the Indianapolis area is 10 to 15 inches! Here are just a few things to think about:

  1. Make sure that your vehicle has a full tank of gas, plenty of windshield wiper fluid, a snow brush/scraper, blanket and snow shovel. A good working flashlight and a cell phone should be items that you should also have as well.
  2. If you do have to travel, be sure to let someone know where you are going and the route that you intend to take. Keep in mind that Emergency Management agencies may issue travel bans if the weather conditions become too severe.
  3. If your vehicle does become stuck in the snow, stay in it and don't try and venture off for help. Turn the engine on and off as needed to stay warm, but don't leave it running all of the time.
  4. Make sure that your gas cans are full for snow blowers that will be sure to get a work out in this type of weather.
  5. As far as your home is concerned, be sure to have enough food and water to last several days. If you live in an area that is prone to power outages and you are on a well, be sure to fill jugs with water to drink and cook with and fill the bath tub with water that can be used to flush the toilets.
  6. If there is an infant in the house, be sure to have enough formula and diapers to last for several days.
  7. Make sure that cell phones are charged in case the power goes out. If you have a car charger, that is always another option to charge your cell phone.
  8. Have flashlights that are out and available in case you lose power and make sure that you have enough batteries to power these.
  9. If you lose power and are using a space heater to keep the house warm, never leave the space heater unattended and keep it out of the reach of small children.
  10. Portable generators can be a life saver when you lose power, but be sure that this is not brought into the house where there is the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.

It is my sincere hope that this blizzard does not deliver as predicted, but better to be prepared than not.
