Deployed Marines at Thanksgiving

The Marines pictured above are deployed and celebrating Thanksgiving many miles from home and away from their families and friends. As we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving here in the United States this week, it is important to remember those in the military that are serving our country in far away lands. We have much to be grateful for in our daily lives, but we need to be especially mindful of the great sacrifiices made by the men and women of the armed forces. And please don't forget the families of those that are deployed. They need our support just as much if not more than their loved ones in uniform.

Drain stoppages tend to top the list of plumbing problems at Thanksgiving. The biggest mistake that people make with disposals is stuffing them like the Thanksgiving turkey. Feed small amounts at a time and give the disposal the opportunity to do its job before adding more.

Disposal tips:

  • Begin running COLD water, not hot, before turning on the disposal.
  • Don't grind celery or other fibrous vegetables that may clog the drain.
  • Continue to run the water for several seconds afterward to make sure that everything gets flushed out to the main drain line.

I have done 2 garbage disposal segments with Tim "Treeboy" Bush over the years and have included the links to those videos for anyone that is so inclined:

If you are traveling for the holiday, be sure to shut the water off to the house before leaving. It's never nice to come home to a flooded house because of a broken fixture or leaking water heater. And if you haven't already done so, be sure and disconnect your garden hoses before the freezing temperatures set in for the winter.

Sincerely,
