Tour d'Elegance Returns to Byway

The Byway will once again be the setting for the annual Tour d'Elegance. Slated for Saturday, July 26, many of New England's finest classic cars will drive a 40-mile coastal route from Beverly to Newburyport. The tour is organized as part of the Misselwood Concours d'Elegance, the region's premier boutique car show held at the Endicott College's Misselwood Estate. Read More.

17th Century Saturdays

More than a dozen historic First Period structures throughout the Byway communities will be open to visitors for special hours on the first Saturday of each month through October. Many of these sites are rarely open to the public and represent America's most comprehensive collection of buildings from our first century of European settlement. Learn more.

A Kid's Guide to Cape Ann

Cape Ann is chock full of kid friendly activities to keep families entertained all summer long. From camps to libraries and art to athletics, many of these activities are now compiled in a handy booklet available online.

Partnership Grant Spotlight

Essex Shipbuilding Museum

The museum's summer exhibit, "The Building of the Schooner Mayflower in 1921," is the last of four free seasonal exhibits "re-presenting" the museum's key, long term programs and one-day events celebrating Essex history. The novel strategic initiative expands the public's access to and understanding of the museum's core interpretive programming. The prior exhibits have featured gravestones, canines at sea and coastal ecology (river and marsh).

Heritage Education Spotlight

Chorale in the Community
As part of the Essex Heritage and National Park Service Park for Every Classroom program, Swampscott Middle School Music Director, Jennifer Bowler, worked with her chorale students throughout last school year to investigate the role of a musician within their community. Not only did the students have a chance to meet with local professional musicians, they went on to launch their own mentorship program and music workshop! Learn more.
Wanted: Pioneers!

Now is the time to nominate a Pioneer in Partnership (PIP)! Every fall, Essex Heritage recognizes individuals and/or organizations that have shown leadership in building partnerships that preserve and enhance the heritage of the region. This year, Essex Heritage will present the PIP Awards at our Fall Meeting, to be held on Thursday, October 23, 2014, from 8 AM - 10 AM, at The Governor's Academy in Byfield. Learn more and submit a nomination: download a 2014 PIP Nomination Form (pdf).

"I Heart Heritage" is a new interview series highlighting and celebrating Essex Heritage's diverse community of partners and supporters. This month, we sat down with Kate Luchini, Executive Director of the Lynn Museum, to ask her about her view of Essex Heritage and why she loves the Heritage Area. Essex Heritage Named
"Best of New England"

"Salem Witch Hunt: Examine the Evidence", a film produced by Essex Heritage and shown daily at the National Park Service Regional Visitor Center in Salem, was recognized as an "Editors' Choice" winner in Yankee Magazine's May/June Best of New England issue. The magazine also named Trails & Sails a "favorite maritime festival" and devoted a prominent feature story to the regular Trails & Sails tours of the Salem Marine Society's "Ship's Cabin" atop the Hawthorne Hotel.
