Ipswich's Economic Development Campaign
Sharp-eyed visitors to Crane Beach this summer may discover one of 50 sculpted sand dollars shimmering in the sun. The silver and blue treasure is part of a campaign designed to celebrate all things Ipswich and boost traffic for downtown merchants, who are often bypassed by those heading to the 4.5 miles of pristine beach. Lucky sand dollar finders are able to trade in their discovery at the Ipswich Visitor Center for prize envelopes stuffed with goodies from local merchants. Read more.

Partnership Grant Spotlight
Essex County Greenbelt Association
As part of its 10-year campaign to protect, manage and expand osprey nesting habitat, Greenbelt utilized a 2013 Essex Heritage Partnership Grant to design, fabricate and install informational kiosks at three osprey viewing sites. The full-color interpretative panels provide information about osprey migratory behaviors, habitat preferences, breeding behavior and Greenbelt's Osprey Program. The kiosks are located at Greenbelt's Sally Weatherall Saltmarsh on Little Neck Road in Ipswich, Greenbelt's Allyn Cox Reservation and headquarters and at J.T. Farnham's Restaurant, both on Eastern Avenue (Rt. 133) in Essex. The latter two sites are on the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway in Essex. Be sure to check out the Osprey Cam, a great way to see these magnificent birds of prey.

Heritage Education Spotlight
Essex Heritage Disseminates Best Practices in Education Programming Last month, Essex Heritage was invited to showcase its model teacher place-based service learning professional development program in several settings. From the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area's annual conference at the University of Virginia to two national and regional webinars offered by the National Park Service, Essex Heritage Education Coordinator Beth Beringer and National Park Service Education Specialist Maryann Zujewski presented how our joint professional development programs utilize partnerships to increase impact and detailed why place-based service learning can be a powerful, transferable education model for any community. Via these presentations, Beth and Maryann outlined ways that attendees could use community -- and park-centered opportunities and collaborations to encourage students' sense of civic engagement and stewardship. |
