Event Submission Deadline: June 20th!
Do you want to bring new visitors to your site or build public awareness and audience for your cause, mission and organization? Then host a free, fun Trails & Sails event to give residents and visitors the chance to connect and experience your special place!
The Trails & Sails event submission website is back online and there is still time to plan and submit your event, or become a Trails & Sails event host! The event submission deadline for the printed guide is June 20th. Essex Heritage plans to print and distribute ~5,000 guides, so don't wait! Email or call us at 978-740-0444 to get involved!

2013 Essex Heritage
Hero Award Dinner
Essex Heritage and the National Park Service will be pleased to honor Mrs. Joanne Holbrook Patton & The Patton Family at the sixth annual Essex Heritage Hero Award Dinner on Wednesday, October 16, 2013!
The Heritage Hero Award was established to recognize the special contributions of individuals whose passions
embody the mission of Essex Heritage - to protect and preserve the region's rich historic, cultural and natural resources - for the benefit of all who live, work and visit the area.
There is no other family on the North Shore that exemplifies the spirit of giving more than the Patton Family. They have spent their lifetime honoring our region, this country, our heritage and our military. Learn more about each of the 2013 Heritage Hero Honorees.

Developed by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM), this online guide provides information on publicly accessible sites ranging from expansive beaches with parking and concession stands to more out-of-the-way areas with scenic vistas.

On the Trail
New Border to Boston Trail Map
Use the new Border to Boston Trail map to explore the rail trail in Salisbury, Newburyport, Topsfield, Wenham, Danvers and Peabody. Essex Heritage has provided technical support to a coalition of communities seeking to expedite development of the 28-mile trail linking nine communities.
Bikeable Communities Guide
Essex Heritage staff recently attended a bikeable communities training session presented by the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition, which produced the guide entitled "Shifting Gears: An Introduction to Better Bicycling for Your Community." Get the guide!
Cape Ann Trail Group Launched
A new nonprofit organization, Cape Ann Trail Stewards (CATs), has been founded by citizens of Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex to help landowners and conservation organizations protect, maintain and expand Cape Ann's trail networks. Learn More.

2013 Salem Maritime Festival

This year Salem Maritime National Historic Site is celebrating two historic anniversaries! It is the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of Salem Maritime National Historic Site - America's first national historic site - and the 25th Anniversary of the Salem Maritime Festival.

The 2013 Salem Maritime Festival will be held on Saturday, August 3rd, from 12pm - 4pm! Join us to enjoy lots of free, family fun activities and music throughout the park and on Derby Wharf.

Park for Every Classroom Teacher Workshop
July 15 - 18, 2013
There is sill time to register for a Park for Every Classroom - a free professional development program for K-12 educators of all disciplines at Salem Maritime National Historic Site this summer!
Working with experts from the National Park Service, Salem State University, Salem Sound Coastwatch, KIDS Consortium, Essex National Heritage Commission and other exemplary teachers from the field, teachers will learn how to use our schoolyards, communities, public lands, and other special places as resources to engage students in place-based, service-learning projects that promote stewardship. Youth Jobs Program Update

Help The Great Marsh
The Great Marsh, one of the region's most iconic natural features is being attacked by Phragmites, an highly invasive reed that has damaged hundreds of acres in this ecologically important salt marsh system. A Kickstarter fundraising campaign has been launched to support production of a series of educational videos. Learn More.

Partnership Grant Spotlight
The Danvers Alarm List Company, the nonprofit steward of the Rebecca Nurse Homestead, recently celebrated the opening of a new permanent exhibit featuring some of the 5,000 artifacts unearthed on the grounds by archaeology field school participants. The artifacts, such as stone points, glassware, buttons, buckles, medicine bottles, nails, ceramics and smoking pipes, will help visitors learn about to the everyday lives of those who inhabited the area from the pre-historic Native American era through the early 20th century.
