How do you build community? One pie at a time
Today, volunteers from our PIE parent association spent the day delivering yummy pies to new families up and down the valley: 15 pies in total. (There are 25 new families this year, so if you are new and haven't received your pie, Clare or Alicia or Jackie will be at your doorstep soon!)
What's remarkable about today is not just the warmth of this gesture from PIE, which stands for "Partners in Education." It's how the act of intentionally welcoming each new family this way speaks to the spirit of our school. PIE president Clare Evert-Shane and her team dreamed up this project last year as part of the ongoing revitalization of our parent association. Clearly, their outreach has touched many hearts. One mom, who happened to be at home when the pie delivery arrived, was so moved that she cried.
Community is one of the core values of our school, along with character, respect, responsibility, and perseverance. To all who help make our community strong, thank you.

On the calendar this week
School pictures are tomorrow, Tuesday. Noted photographer Jason Dewey, an ACDS parent, will be making portraits of each student along with class photos. These are used in our yearbook and also offered to parents for purchase as prints and on a wide variety of merchandise. Stay tuned for ordering info. Click here for your grade's photo time on Tuesday.
Middle School Back to School Night: Wednesday, September 17, at 5 pm in Goldsmith Hall. We will gather in Edliss Neeson for snacks and there will be some announcements. Parents will then follow student schedules so they can go to each class for about ten minutes.
Grade-by-grade parent "potlucks" are being added to the calendar. New this year, it's an All-Middle-School parent potluck this Sunday at 5 pm. Parents of Sixth-Eighth Graders, watch your email for the Paperless Post invite and RSVP ASAP!

Be Part of the Art Tower: tile project to benefit the Capital Campaign for our campus!
Colorful tiles on the Lower School tower are a great way to support Aspen Country Day's campus redevelopment and show off your child's (or your own!) artistic style. We currently have about two dozen tiles ready to put in place as the project continues to grow. If you would like to be part of the art tower this fall, it's not too late! You can download the template for drawing your artwork and make your online donation to the art tower fund right on our website.
To have your artwork included in the next batch of tiles to go up October 6, Please make your donation and artwork by Thursday, September 18!
This project supports Known & Loved, the Capital Campaign for Country Day that has helped create our beautiful new campus. The tile project is a way for all families to participate at any level. The donation for each tile is $250; payment plans and support are available. Please contact Mark Bell, Director of Advancement, with any questions.
PS Where to turn in your completed artwork? To Caterina in the Lower School office!

Coming soon to ACDS, help spread the word: Girls Leadership Institute
Student leadership is on the rise in Middle School! Eighth Graders participated in a Leadership Summit right before school started. Plus, we now have a Leadership Elective to replace the standard Student Council. We have seven students, five girls and two boys, and in just two sessions they have developed some great ideas.
We are pleased to announce another opportunity for girls and their mothers to participate in a leadership weekend facilitated by the Girls Leadership Institute. The crux of the weekend, as with most leadership discussions these days, is the role of positive communication, empathy, and compassion in developing the leadership skills necessary in our rapidly changing world. The event is October 18 and 19; registration is required. Click here for info.
This workshop is just for girls in Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grade, and it's open to ACDS adult/girl pairs until September 28; after that, others can register if there's still space.
ACDS Middle School teachers write, "As women who have worked with middle school children for a number of years, we believe this institute will not only help each of the girls individually, but will also go a long way in creating the supportive academic and emotional community that we all want for all of our kids. Please carefully consider taking advantage of the great opportunity." |
