About the NLLD

The North Lafourche Conservation, Levee, and Drainage District (known as NLLD), was formed in 1992 to provide drainage and flood protection services for the northern portion of Lafourche Parish, including the entire parish north of the Intracoastal Canal.
The District includes over 250 miles of levees and drainage canals and over 40 pump stations.

The NLLD office is located at 627 Jackson Street,
Thibodaux, LA  70301.

NLLD Director Works with FEMA to Develop Accurate Flood Maps

North Lafourche Levee District (NLLD) Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois is part of a local advisory committee working with FEMA to accurately update flood maps for Lafourche Parish. Terrebonne and Lafourche are part of a flood map pilot program that includes 25 communities, five of which are in Louisiana.

Local officials want the maps to reflect realistic flood risk to ensure that our communities sufficiently plan for development in our coastal areas without overburdening residents and businesses with construction regulations and insurance costs. Bourgeois and others are working to have locally constructed levees recognized as a level of flood protection, and to help FEMA develop realistic elevation benchmarks and flood models.

As Bourgeois told HoumaToday.com, one problem with proposed maps already developed by FEMA is that the agency's computer models are mostly based on river flooding, which is far different than a moving hurricane with variable winds pushing water in different directions across the marsh. It is very critical that FEMA modeling more accurately predicts how storm surge from the Gulf will impact developed areas as it moves inland.

"If it reflects the true risk, you can have informed decisions about building," Bourgeois said. "Then you can prevent flooding in the first place."

Bayou Onion Clearing and Maintenance Dredging Project Underway

The clearing work for the Bayou Onion Clearing and Maintenance Dredging Project began on May 12 and is being conducted by Sealevel Construction, Inc. This phase of the project is ahead of schedule, with about 59 percent complete. NLLD will follow this clearing phase with maintenance dredging using the District's large Amphibious Excavator. The project is intended to improve drainage for Thibodaux, Sugar Ridge, Chackbay and Choupic.
