Dear St. Andrews Family-
I am sure that by now most everyone has heard the news, but just in case you haven't, St. Andrews has an Interim Pastor!! Rev. Mary Jane Cornell is our new interim pastor and her first Sunday with us will be September 8th. I hope that everyone will be here to welcome Mary Jane and to start the program year together. On the 8th, we move to our 2 service schedule with worship at 9 am and 11 am and Sunday School at 10 am. On the 8th, we will be celebrating Rally Day, and will gather in Heffner Hall for breakfast together. Then the children and youth will leave to go to their Sunday School classes and the adults will stay to here about the different SS options. We will also highlight the other programs that are starting back in the fall, so it is a great chance to plug back in! I hope that you will all join us on September 8th to give Mary Jane a huge St. Andrews welcome and start the program year off together with your church family!
Grace and Peace,
Morgan

Youth
Youth kick off is September 8th! Choir will be from 5-6, dinner is at 6 and the program is for 6:30-7:30. We will meet every Sunday in September. Also, remember that the Race for Grace (R4G) is Saturday, September 28th. We will need your help getting ready for the race, helping with the pre-race dinner on Friday and working the day of the race. Get your friends and neighbors to sign up to run and ask business that you frequent to sponsor the race! This race is the only fundraising that we do to help cover the costs of our mission trips!

Session Minutes
JULY LAMPLIGHTER REPORT
SESSION ACTIVITIES
August 18, 2013
The Session and Diaconate met on August 18, 2013; in addition to times of prayer and praise, we took the following actions and received the following reports:
- The Session read the article "Why We Will No Longer Be a Welcoming Church", and discussed the questions asked in relation to SAPC. Several thoughtful issues were raised and considered.
- A motion to approve the consent agenda, which approved minutes of past meetings, and written reports from Clerk, Treasurer, Pastor and Ministries was approved unaminously.
- The Interim Pastor Search Team reported that the Rev. Mary Jane Cornell has accepted the position, beginning September 1st. The Committee provided a letter to be sent to the Congregation with biographical data on Ms. Cornell.
- The master calendar was considered for the months of September through December to determine appropriate placement of all events to be scheduled for the Fall. It was decided that SAPC Homecoming will be held on November 10th, with the traditional barbeque luncheon. This Sunday will also include the kick-off for Stewardship.
- Kim Clayton, the SAPC Committee on Ministry liaison shared with the Session the newly revised "Pastoral Transition Process for Presbytery of Greater Atlanta Churches". We have completed Phase I and most of Phase II; the remaining task for Phase II is the collection of demographic information, to be completed with the Interim Pastor's oversight. We will then move into Phase III, the formation of the Pastoral Nominating Committee. Ms. Clayton will work extensively with the PNC to move forward from that point.
- A motion to amend corporate rules to allow electronic voting on issues by the Session when necessary to accomplish the business of the Church was approved
- A motion to update the Request for Funds/Purchase Order Policy, made by the Management Ministry, was approved.
- A motion to update the Facility Usage Policy as submitted by the Management Ministry was discussed and defeated. Ministry will revise, based on discussion issues, and re-submit for approval at the September meeting.
- A motion to allow the location of a Little Library, requested by Penny Bellinger, was approved. When the Library is completed, Penny will notify the Clerk, and will work together with the Session and the Dcor Committee to determine appropriate placement on the SAPC campus.
- A motion from the Worship Ministry to allow the use of the Sanctuary from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in Wednesdays for the liturgical dance group "Little Light of Mine" was approved. Ed Weaver will serve as the staff member in charge.
- The Education Ministry moved that WOW would resume as a monthly activity to meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month from September through December. Motion was approved. A mission activity will be planned for these evenings.
- The meeting was adjourned with prayer.

Church Women United
Church Women United continues to collect Campbell Soup labels. Please leave the UPC bar codes on each. These labels are used by schools, group foster homes, and other child care organizations to purchase educational equipment.
Also, they are again collecting ALL kinds of used stamps. Please leave plenty of space around them, leaving all the perforated edges. Trim well away from the edges or leave them on the envelope if you prefer. These are sold to deal and the money is used for Church Women United missions such as "Bread for the World, "Food and Tools for Hungry People".
Please leave these items the church office or give to Betty Gatewood, 770-493-8609.
The next meeting will be:
Human Rights Celebration
9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 4th, 2013
Hillside Presbyterian Church
World Community Day
9:45 a.m. on Friday, November 1st, 2013

Presbyterian Women
On Tuesday, September 10, St. Andrews Presbyterian Women's group will begin the new year. We will gather in the "Meeting Room" at 10:00am to begin studying "An Abiding Hope; The Presence of God in Exodus and Dueteronomy" by Janice Catron. Both day circles plan to meet together that morning. Mary O'Brien, 770-939-2412 and Janet Shiver, 770-491-7726 are the leaders of these circles. We would welcome any who would like to join us at that time. Mary, Janet or I would be glad to answer any questions you might have.
There is also a circle of women who are employed outside the home. They meet as needed to have fun or do special projects such as the goodie boxes for our college students and those in the military. Margaret Ellingson, 770-491-8058 is the contact person for that group.
We hope you will find a group that fits your schedule and join.

Getting to know Thornwell Home for Children
Once an orphanage, today Thornwell serves abused, abandoned and neglected children - boys and girls ranging in age from toddler to young adult. Thornwell's children are primarily private placements; however, some children come to Thornwell through the Department of Social Services.
Thornwell serves approximately 100 children annually in the residential program. Additionally, Thornwell provides opportunities for children and youth in the Clinton, SC community to be involved on campus. The Thornwell Agriculture Education Center (TAEC) and the local high school agriculture departments partner to offer youth an opportunity to learn about a working farm and how to care for animals. Several times a year, the TAEC hosts hundreds of local elementary school children, introducing them to the animals on Thornwell's farm. During the summer, mission groups from all over the southeast volunteer on campus and interact with Thornwell's children and youth.
Thornwell is unique among children's homes in that its ministry not only offers a safe, loving home for each child, but it also offers support programs that include physical and mental health care, a state-of-the-art Learning Center for academic support, a faith development and Christian nurture program, and a fully operational farm and agricultural program.
With a goal of preserving families, Thornwell also offers services to parents and caregivers. Through community outreach and pre-intervention efforts, families can get help before the need for placement at Thornwell arises. Next month...Building Families Program.

Thank you
Thank you to all the generous people of St. Andrews who donated school supplies for the families of the Six Star Refugee Partnership. Special thanks to the anonymous donor who sent a carton of supplies. I think we have enough supplies to get all three families through the entire school year.
