50 Years in the Rosarian Academy Theater
Celebrating Dramatic Excellence

Rosarian Academy has infused dramatic excellence into the daily lives of students since its inception in 1925. Thanks to a generous gift from Mr. Frederick Machlin, the Margaret Tighe Machlin Fine Arts Center opened its doors to generations of young hearts on December 14, 1964. The theater has been an iconic landmark in Palm Beach County ever since. This week marks the 50th anniversary of Rosarian's magnificent 485-person professional theater.

"This outstanding venue, with a fully functional orchestra pit and lift, is more than just a theater. It's an avenue for students to become enriched through the arts-helping to develop the whole person for life," said Ms. Cathy Reader who has worked at Rosarian Academy since 1971 and has assisted with the setup and lighting for nearly every production in the theater for over 40 years.

Director of Fine Arts and drama teacher, Mr. Bob Sherman, and long-standing music teacher, pianist, and leader of Rosarian Academy's Show Choir, Mrs. Gay Dedo, both agree with Ms. Reader that "it's more than just a theater."

"It's a path to provide a strong, accomplished school environment as student performance in the classroom matures though discovery of the arts," stated Mr. Sherman, "We engage our students in a creative process that goes hand in hand with Rosarian's strong academics. And more than that, memories of being on this stage, in this theater, last a lifetime!"

Mrs. Dedo added, "It's a stage for self expression and creativity where life lessons are taught and learned."

Over the last fifty years, the Rosarian Academy Theater has been enjoyed by thousands of patrons. Legends-Judy Garland, Perry Como & Peter Lawford-performed on stage. The community has relished in the talents of Ballet Florida, Gilbert & Sullivan Society and the Greater Palm Beach Symphony. Most importantly, the theater has set the scene for countless drama productions, school-wide Masses, character assemblies, awards presentations, and graduations.

A grand 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Theater will be take place on February 28, 2015, with the Royal Rosarian Talent Showcase. For more information on this event, please contact Sheena Wilber: [email protected] or 561.345.3109.

Girls Basketball Scores 3-Peat Championship
Palm Beach Independent School Athletic Conference Champions

Following a close semifinals game against Somerset Canyons (20-17), the girls basketball team advanced to the finals against The Benjamin School on Wednesday, December 10th, defeating the Buccaneers 26-19 and winning their third consecutive Palm Beach Independent School Athletic Conference Championship.

In the very exciting championship game, the Raiders outplayed the Buccaneers for much of the game. Every time Rosarian built a 6-7 point lead, Benjamin fought hard and hit a three-point shot to close the gap within 3-4 points.  In the end, Kate Driscoll's amazing free-throw shooting sealed the championship.  Kate finished with a game high of 14 points, including 8 in the fourth quarter.  6 of those 8 points were free throws.

Under the leadership of Coach Jameson Olsen, the girls basetball team has a three year record of 36-3 and 3 championships.  Congratulations on this amazing accomplishment at the middle school level.

This 2014 girls basketball team consisted of: Gina Landrum, Lily Cook, Lacey Steele, Sydney Dyett, Bella Vega-Dadurian, Maddison Fabbri, Harper Murphy, Devyn Dyett, Isabella Fiorention, Hannah Lewis, Izzy B Goldstein, Georgia Forconi, Kate Driscoll, and Erin Yavinsky.

Emma Quattlebaum Honored as December Student of the Month
8th Grader Honored by Kiwanis Club of Palm Beach

Rosarian Academy eighth grade student, Emma Quattlebaum, was honored as the school's December Kiwanis Club Student of the Month on December 3rd.

Emma was recognized by the Kiwanis Club of Palm Beach for her excellence, character and leadership potential. She was accompanied by her father, mother, and History teacher Mrs. Kathy Moormann at the luncheon. In her acceptance speech, Emma said, "I would like to thank my parents for molding me into the person I am today and giving me such great opportunities, especially choosing to send me to Rosarian. The faculty and staff at Rosarian are amazing...Without them, I wouldn't be the student or person that I have become today. Rosarian has given me a foundation for life, and I am so grateful for the many things I have received."

Emma has attended Rosarian Academy since she was five years old in Kindergarten. She is an active member of the NJHS, a Student Ambassador, and a Duke TIP Scholar. Emma hopes to attend either Oxbridge Academy or the dance program at Dreyfoos School of the Arts for high school.
A Beautiful Christmas Reunion
US Marine Dylan Perry Stirs Emotions on Campus When He Surprises His Siblings

Love and family are two words that embody the spirit of Christmas. The Rosarian campus experienced a true Christmas story on December 16th when U.S. Marine Dylan Perry surprised his three younger siblings--Carson (6th), Kendal (4th), and Caden (K) in their classrooms. Dylan is currently stationed in Japan and hasn't been home for over a year. What a beautiful family reunion!

Third Graders Provide Stockings to Parents at The Quantam House
Students Decorate and Fill Stockings to Brighten Others' Spirits

Ms. Rogers' third grade students decorated and filled stockings for 20 mothers and fathers who will be staying at the Quantum House during the Christmas season. The Quantam House is on the grounds of St. Mary's Hospital and provides housing for children and families of children who are seeking medical care in a nearby medical facility. The children that stay there are provided with many gifts for Christmas; therefore, the third graders decided to do something fun for the parents and provide them with an extra special goody.
NJHS Spreads Holiday Cheer to Old and Young
Nursing Home, Opportunity Inc, The Lord's Place Family Campus

A group of about 15 middle school students visited the Lourders-Noreen McKeen nursing home on Tuesday, November 25th from 3:30 to 5:15.  Students visited with nine of the residents there who typically do not get a lot of visitors.  Some just shared good conversation and stories of the past and others played card games.  It was a great opportunity for the students to not only help bring some joy into the lives of others during this holiday season, but also get a unique perspective of different time periods in history.

On Friday, December 5th, 20 of our middle school students went to Opportunity Inc. Early Learning Center in West Palm to spread some Christmas cheer!  Thanks to the donations of a number of NJHS students, the students decorated over 200 homemade Christmas cookies and facilitated a number of craft activities with around 40 preschoolers.  Everyone had a blast, and the students had another great opportunity to practice the spirit of the season.

The next Friday, December 12th, the NJHS held a similar service event at The Lord's Place family campus. The NJHS students not only baked over 400 cookies to decorate with the children who reside there, but also organized a number of fun events, such as a candy cane relay and pine cone decorating.  Around 25 6th, 7th, and 8th graders helped contribute to the festivities and helped make the day a special one for the children of The Lord's Place.

6th Grade Field Trip to Palm Beach Post

Mrs. Ferguson and her 6th grade English class visited The Palm Beach Post on December 8th.

Samantha Ragland, Social Media Producer at The Post, and Sonja Isger, School News Reporter, gave a presentation on social media and discussed the typical day of a journalist.

The students received a special treat when they got a behind scenes look at the IdeaBar creative room, thanks to Mrs. Ferguson's sister-in-law, Mae Ferguson, who works with Ideabar at the Post as the New Business Account Executive.

Ideabar is a Marketing Consultancy of The Palm Beach Post that provides a menu of services to marketing and advertising clients. Services include advertising campaigns, market research, digital media services, creative design services, events and custom publishing.

"As a result of the visit, many students are now hoping to pursue a career one day in journalism," Mrs. Ferguson said. "But it was interesting to see how the Ideabar made many more students want to pursue a career in marketing or advertising."

You Can't Catch Me, I'm the Gingerbread Man
Gingerbread Man Escapes from the Kindergarten Classes

"You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!" While eating lunch in the dining hall on December 5th, there was a LOUD bang in the kitchen. The kindergarten students quickly learned that the Gingerbread Man escaped from the oven! The 30 students quickly went on a hunt to find the Gingerbread Man they made. They found the first clue in their classroom and then followed the gingerbread crumbs and clues around campus and ended in Mrs. Linsin's office. Mrs. Linsin finally convinced the Gingerbread Man to get back on the tray. The children then enjoyed eating the yummy Gingerbread Man.

Rosarian Show Choir Tours Palm Beach County

2014 School Days End with Christmas Joy
Lower School and Children's House Christmas Performances

The last two school days of 2014 ended with two beautiful Christmas programs in the Rosarian Theater.

On Thursday, December 18th, the kindergarten through fourth grade students celebrated the birth of Jesus with the annual Christmas Pageant. With the kindergartners dressed as the beautiful Nativity characters and the fourth graders narrating the Christmas story, it was a joyous and beautiful portrayal of the true reason for the Christmas season.

The Children's House students took the stage on Friday as their sweet, angelic voices filled the theater with an ensemble of Christmas carols. Santa even made a special visit to watch the performance!

A special thank you to our Music Director Ms.Gay Dedo for sharing her musical talent with the Rosarian students year after year.
