Adam Rodman, Class of 1999
Congratulations to Rosarian Alum, Adam Rodman, for being selected as one of Forbes' Top 30 Under 30 for finance in 2014.

Peter Lansing, Class of 2004
Peter then (Kindergarten)
After attending  Rosarian Academy from preschool all the way through 8th grade, Peter Lansing graduated in 2004.  He attended Suncoast Community High School's IB program. After graduation in 2008, Peter continued onto the University of Central Florida and graduated in May 2013.

Since college,  Peter has been working as the Assistant Director of The Pat Reeves Village, a program of The Center for Family Services. Running the financial assistance program at the Shelter, he teaches the clients how to properly budget. Peter also organizes and manages a children's volunteer program and helps maintain the shelter and property.

During high school and college, Peter interned at several banks and is currently studying to become a chartered financial analyst, an industry of particular interest to him..  In his free time, Peter enjoys weight training and competing in natural bodybuilding competitions.

Regarding Peter's experience at Rosarian, he said:

Peter today

"I have kept in touch with my Rosarian classmates, and I am still very close with most today. Rosarian prepared me for life in many ways.  Instilling in me effective study habits has enabled me to continue my education and has helped me become more disciplined, which pays off at work and play.  I can still recite, or I should say sing, every United States president by heart (thanks, Ms. Adley!).  I won the school's National Geographic Geography Bee in 8th grade (thanks, Ms. Moormann!).

"I have very fond memories of Rosarian. Those memories will last a lifetime. I was truly blessed to attend such a great school. I hope to one day be a parent and have my children attend Rosarian as well. Thank you for the fantastic early grade/middle school experience!"

My Kid's Teacher Rocks Winner
Mrs. Crowley Selected as a January Winner

Second grade teacher, Susan Crowley, was selected as a January winner for South Florida Parenting magazine's "My Kid's Teacher Rocks" contest. Congratulations Mrs. Crowley! And thank you to the Dorsey family for nominating her with the following submission:

"Mrs. Crowley rocks as a teacher because of one simple reason - she cares. She cares about the whole being of the student. Instead of being focused on grades, she concentrates her efforts in providing her students with an academic environment that makes them eager to learn. This is the second child I have had in her class and it is because of her that my children not only love school but love to learn. She makes even the most difficult subjects fun. She rewards good behavior and instills in her students a motivation to always put forth their best efforts in their work. Mrs. Crowley is also patient and has a wonderful way of using the perfect combination of discipline, grace and humor to ensure that her students respect the classroom, their peers and themselves. Kids leave Mrs. Crowley's classroom not only better at reading and math but with the confidence needed to excel in the next grade level. Thanks, Mrs. Crowley!"

Gung Hay Fat Choy
Happy Chinese New Year from the Children's House

January 31 marked the Chinese New Year. As part of the Children's House study of China, Ms. Cindy's class learned about the New Year and made dragon masks. The children sampled dumplings, vegetable sushi and green tea. Then they finished their morning with a dragon parade around campus as they wished various classes a "Gung Hay Fat Choy."
Up, Up & Away: High Touch High Tech Science
 First Grade In-School Field Trip

As part of the Core Knowledge Science unit on Astronomy, the first graders studied the sun, space, earth, stars, stargazing, constellations, the moon, the history of space exploration and astronauts, and the solar system.

To enhance this unit, the children participated in a High Touch High Tech in-school science field trip on January 17, called "Up, Up & Away." They were engaged in high interest, high energy hands-on activities both in the classroom and outdoors. The students spun tops like the planets spin on their axis and spun different size hoops representing the rotations of the various planets, launched rockets from "launch pads" on the playground, and participated in other activities. It was a great culmination to their Astronomy study

Understanding Our Florida History
Fourth Grade Visits Little Red Schoolhouse, Flagler Museum and Participates in Florida Heritage Program

This month's fourth grade curriculum included the study of Florida history. Students learned about the local history and culture of Florida with valuable experiences in and out of the classrooms.

Mrs. Henry and Ms. Adley's classes visited the Little Red Schoolhouse where the students dressed from the late 1800's and spent the day in a one-room schoolhouse to experience the history of Florida life during that time period. The students also visited the Flagler Museum on Palm Beach to learn the significance of Henry Flagler to Florida. Lastly, Mrs. Amanda Skier, a representative from the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, came to Rosarian to teach the Florida Heritage Program, which includes art, architecture and history.

Mac Murphy Wins Geographic Bee
Moves One Step Closer to $50,000 College Scholarship

Seventh grader Mac Murphy won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 17, 2014, and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 26th annual National Geographic Bee.

The school winners from thousands of schools, including Mac Murphy, will now take a written test. Up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state Bee on April 4, 2014. Mac competed in the state Bee last year and is hopeful of competing for the second consecutive year.

The first place national winner will receive a $50,000 college scholarship.

Congratulations to Mac and first runner-up Hope Diffenderfer (fifth grade) for their hard work and a job well done!

Science Classes Get Electric and Magnetic
Expert Scientist Presents to the Eighth Grade

Expert scientist and parent, Mr. Ed Lim, presented to the eighth grade class on the practical end of electricity and how it relates to their lives. Mr. Lim, Lead Electrical Engineer working as an advisor to FPL, pointed out the connection between electricity and magnetism and the practical applications of an electric generator as it creates an alternating current by turning a magnet and a coil of wire in relation to each other.

Following Mr. Lim's presentation and as a performance of understanding, Mrs. Linck's eighth grade science classes created their own electromagnets and generators.
Eighth Grade Visits Nursing Center
Celebrating Catholic Schools Week with Service

As part of Rosarian's celebration of Catholic Schools Week, the eighth grade class visited the E.J. Healey Rehabilitation & Nursing Center on January 28th. Many of the students had a first-time experience visiting with the elderly, including conversations with the residents in both English and Spanish; the girls giving manicures to the ladies; the boys engaging in card games, dominoes, and bingo with the men; and a few of the students entertaining the residents with songs. This visit to the nursing center is one of the many service opportunities afforded to our students through their religion class.

Catholic schools week is celebrated annually on a national level, the last week in January. Catholic schools observe the week with Masses, open houses, service projects and gatherings. Through these events, schools focus on the values of Catholic education.
Why Do You Like Going to Rosarian Academy?
Middle School Students Express What They Like About Our School

As part of celebrating Catholic Schools week, students in fifth and sixth grade Religion classes wrote about why  they like going to Rosarian Academy. Below are excerpts from a few of the students essays.

"I like Rosarian because everyone is like a big family and we are all very close with one another and have been friends since we were very young, so we have bonds that are close to inseparable. Not only are we accepting of our old friends but when we get new students, they are welcomed with open arms."

"I like going to Rosarian Academy because the academics are great and the teachers are sincerely dedicated to helping you learn...They appropriately balance extra curricular activities with academics. Rosarian Academy is built on faith in God and sets a great example for all of its students."

"I just recently joined Rosarian in 6th grade and it already feels like my second home. All of my classmates are so kind especially when I need help...The teachers are very helpful and have brought me far in every class...I like how many great qualities you earn from coming to this school. Even if you are a different religion, students can still come and learn about Catholic  beliefs. I also like the feeling I get in each class, having no limit on following your dreams and just being yourself."

"I like Rosarian Academy because they are a Catholic school and teach me to be respectful and kind to anyone and everyone I meet. Rosarian Academy students are very adamant about learning and participating in school activities. We also love new people coming to our school because it gives us the advantage of meeting new people and making more friends."

"There are many reasons why I enjoy going to school here but the main reason is for the amazing education I am getting that will keep me for life. I love all my friends here and the teachers always give 100% to make sure we understand what we are learning...I feel like I'm in a safe environment and well taken care of everyday."

"One of my favorite things about Rosarian is Mass as I enjoy spreading the word of God and the Mass helps me learn about my Catholic faith...I am so lucky to go to such a great school that helps me receive a great education."

"I like the classes because they are hard and help me think more. I like how it is a private school and it is good to learn about God...This school has been my home since kindergarten and I've felt really safe."

Did You Know?
History of Stations of the Cross in the Rosarian Chapel

Towards the end of January, we had a special visit from Joan Nylen Italiano, OP, who is a Third Order Dominican--or lay Dominican. Joan attended Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan, which was founded by the Adrian Dominican Sisters. During her senior year of college (around 1951), Joan worked with Sister Helene at Studio Angelico (the building that houses the Art Program at Siena Heights) to create Rosarian Academy's Stations of the Cross that are still in our Chapel today.

The Stations of the Cross were made of a water-based clay. Then, Sr. Helene created a mold and cast the stations in a stained green concrete.

After graduating from Siena Heights University, Joan came to teach at Rosarian from 1952-1956.

Rosarian Academy, founded in 1925, is a private, coeducational, Catholic school sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters. Its mission is to educate the whole person for life in a global community in the light of Gospel values.
