NEWS FROM NASPAA
New Annual Program Survey short form will make it easier for schools to participate
NASPAA's Data Center is excited to announce that, in order to make data reporting easier for programs, we have launched a "short form" version of our Annual Program Survey. The Survey is the primary means of collecting programs' data to make available to students, employers, and the public. The data collection will allow NASPAA to better represent our field and member schools, by enabling us to publish an accurate comparison between our degree programs and others.

Benefits of providing your data to NASPAA:
*  NASPAA is creating a new searchable online school database using the data we are collecting.  Our current search tool was used by 30,000 potential students last year.  The new search will include data only for those programs that have entered data into the Annual Program Survey

*  NASPAA is creating searchable online school profiles to be used by prospective students, other schools, and the public; programs who don't provide their data will have blank profiles.  Don't let your program's profile be blank!

*  By providing NASPAA with your data you allow NASPAA to better represent our sector and our programs by enabling us to provide accurate comparisons between our sector and those degrees we compete with (MBA, JD, etc).
Even if you do not have data available for certain questions you can still submit the data you do have!

Programs that have not yet provided data will soon receive detailed information from Data Center Director Stacy Drudy.

Accreditation update

2013 Self-Study Instructions released

COPRA is pleased to release the 2013 Self-Study Instructions for NASPAA accreditation. This official document outlines the data requirements for accreditation, and provides definitions, a basis of judgment, and illustrative examples on each of the standards. Thank you to all programs that provided feedback on their experiences with the Self-Study Report! The revisions reflect clarifications based on the reactions of the programs having completed accreditation under the 2009 standards, as well as some updates to data fields, and even a few deletions. A summary of the changes in the 2013 release, and the Self-Study Instructions themselves, can be found here.

2013 Site Visits completed

The site visits for the 2012-13 accreditation cohort have been completed! Over 90 site visitors visited 35 programs at 30 schools this spring. COPRA and NASPAA staff would like to thank each of the site visitors for volunteering their time to serve as COPRA's eyes and ears.
COPRA will meet June 1-3 to review the programs in this year's cohort. The formal announcement of the 2013 Accreditation Actions taken by COPRA will be released at the end of the summer.

Programs without dedicated admissions staff are invited as well!  The agenda is still being formed, but last year's gives a good indication of the topics that will be covered in large-group discussions.  A nominal registration fee will be charged (exact amount TBA).

NASPAA organizes Pathways Programs webcast
NASPAA was the lead organizer and sponsor of an information session on the federal Pathways Programs for Students & Recent Graduates, hosted by the US Office of Personnel Management on April 25. The live webcast featured panels of agency HR representatives, an intern supervisor, and current Interns and Presidential Management Fellows (PMF). Over 1,500 students, career services staff, and others registered.
NASPAA emceed the event, and the PMF featured is a former NASPAA intern. Several member schools organized watch-parties, including one at The Ohio State University's Glenn School of Public Affairs.
OPM will post video of the hour-long session online shortly.

Update your website and records with NASPAA's new name!
We remind members that NASPAA has officially changed its name to the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration.  Please update our name as it appears on your website (especially on any accreditation listing) and in your program's records. For mailing lists, use simply NASPAA as the first line; our address is the same.  NASPAA remains The Global Standard in Public Service Education.

Major gift to the Sanford School
The Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University last week announced that it had received a $10 million gift, which includes $6 million to for MPP student fellowships and $2 million for undergraduate policy internships.
From the Executive Director
Small Programs Initiative

Last month, NASPAA launched a task force to look at what we can do to help small programs deal with faculty shortages in critical areas such as budgeting/financial management and IT management in the public sector.  It is hard to offer compelling degree specializations when you have a very small faculty, yet students expect and value that.

One idea for helping small programs is to figure out ways of helping them share their curricular resources, either electronically or through NASPAA Conference sessions and the wiki. Another idea is to collectively work through the organization, to identify and negotiate with members who have the online capacity in those areas of faculty shortages. NASPAA could help negotiate, and perhaps even put out to bid, an opportunity for a school to offer an online course that meets NASPAA's expectations regarding accomplishing the competencies enumerated in our accreditation standards. Then students at eligible small MPA/MPP programs would be able to take that course for credit towards their degree. There are a number of issues we'll be looking into: needs assessment, financing, technical aspects, eligibility, legal issues, competencies, and accreditation issues. But hopefully, at the other end of the tunnel, the task force will come out with some clear recommendations regarding how NASPAA should proceed.

If you have struggled with not being able to offer your students some of the specialty courses that you think are critical to their futures, please get in touch with me, and I'll make sure you're kept apprised of the task force's work. Its members will be presenting a session at our Annual Conference, so you'll want to be there!  I'd like to thank John Daly, chair (South Florida), Roger Hartley (Western Carolina), Lois Wise (Indiana), Bruce Neubauer (Albany State), and Barbara Liggett (Western Michigan) for serving on the task force.
