Greetings!

It's been a month on the road since the last update.  The team is well initiated to the race season and travels at this point and very pleased with preliminary results.

Colin Foley has been leading the charge for CVTC with top results in the Junior category.  With nary a finish outside of the top-5 in early season Alberta Cup and NorAm racing, Colin is hoping to be one of the training centre athletes to qualify for a trip to the World Junior/U23 Championships.

In the senior categories we've had some significant breakthrough performances from Martin Schrama and some consistent strong results from Sebastian Dandurand and Geoffrey Richards.

The pair of races in Rossland will be the last significant races until early January when the team returns to Canmore for the World U23 and Junior Trials.

Happy Trails!

Camps and Travels
Sovereign Lake NorAM (December 7,8, 2013)
The CVTC showed up for their first set of NorAms this season in style.  Despite highs of only -18 the team threw down some big personal bests and started the high level race season on a high note.

Canmore Alberta Cup (November 30, December 1, 2013)
The first pair of races are always nerve wracking but the team settled into a steady rhythm and had some top results at the Canmore Alberta Cup.  Don't be fooled by the seemingly low-level title as the field was peppered with national team athletes and Olympians.

Waxing for Cold Weather
With the recent cold snap in Western Canada, many of us are holed up in the cozy indoors.  If you have to go out and ski - as many racers do - what is the best wax and ski preparation combination possible?

The first step is apply lots of layers of LF4 glide wax into the base of your skis.  This will harden the base of your skis.  For the races in Silver Star, we applied 3-4 layers on each of the athletes skis.

The next step is to test some top coats.  Sometimes we use an additional hardener or some cold powders.  High flourocarbon waxes are not necessarily faster in cold weather, so sometimes straight LF4 is the choice of the day.

There are lots of other gimmicks and tricks out there for cold weather racing, but a good hard base and keeping the body warm and relaxed seems to be the best recipe for performance.
Get to Know the Team: Q&A with Andrew Avis
Where did you grow up?
Goderich, Ontario

Do you have any brothers or sisters?
I am the youngest of three kids.  I have two older brothers, Mitchell (21) and Nick (19).  I like being the youngest - not only are you the favourite, but my brothers also helped toughen me up with lots of play fighting.

How many pairs of skis do you have?
I have 8 pairs of skis but travel with 6 pairs.  I would like one more pair of classic plus skis to add to the mix.

Classic or Skate?
I prefer skate because of the hockey background, but I really enjoy classic skiing, too.

Who are your housemates in Whistler?
My roommates in Whistler are Colin, Ben and Liam. Honestly I wouldn't change - these guys are great to live with.

Favourite moment of the year so far?
My favourite moment of the year so far has been spending the week in Silver Star.  It's my first time ever here and my first set of NorAms.  This is skiers paradise up here - lots of things to do and great skiing!
