Yuri Yamamoto, Guest Speaker and Musician

Yuri Yamamoto, Director of Music for the Raleigh UU Fellowship in North Carolina, will present a service on how she came to accept her Japanese-American heritage.  Yuri states, "Coming to UU has a lot to do with this journey, and the devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accidents in 2011, also opened my heart. I will share stories from Fukushima and songs, both traditional and original, about Japanese traditions."

Our Worship Associate will be Trent Kissinger.

Children and Youth will gather in Phillippa's Place for Service Sunday during the 11:00 worship service.

Special Music will be provided by Yuri Yamamoto.

MH's Discussion Group will meet for breakfast at 9:00 am in Rahn Hall and begin the discussion at 9:30 am.  Everyone is also welcomed to join just for breakfast following the early service (or before the late service).

Music Notes
True Confessions of a UU Music Director
Kelly Blackmarr Carlile

Greetings for November 2014!  The UU Adult Choir made a trip to a Retirement Community and a Nursing Rehabilitation Facility this past Saturday, in tandem with our church's participation in Congregations in Service.  At the Retirement Community we had a decent turnout.  They are familiar with us and had been positively (if not joyfully) anticipating our return.  At the nursing facility... click to continue.

Pastoral Care Note
In Memory of Juliette Rutledge

We sadly share the news of Juliette Rutledge's passing this last Sunday. Our thoughts and prayers are with Juliette's family in this time of great loss.

As a member of the congregation and long-time caregiver for the children of the church, Juliette touched many lives.  As we mourn together, we also celebrate Juliette's life and its many gifts.

A wake for Juliette will be held at Smalls Funeral Home Chapel at 203 Samuel Smalls Sr. Ave. in Guyton, this Friday, Nov. 7, from 6 - 8 pm.  The funeral will be Saturday at 3 pm at the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Association Center, 810 Central Avenue, Guyton, GA. The service will include a eulogy by clergy of Macedonia Baptist and a message of comfort from Rev. Dave.

Flowers can be sent to Smalls Funeral Home in Guyton or food can be received at Juliette's mom's house at 205 Anderson St., Guyton, GA 31312.

Professional Opportunity
Have you ever imagined becoming a religious education leader?

Jolene Byrne will conclude her service as our Director of Religious Education in December. We are currently recruiting for a new DRE to build upon the great foundation that Jolene and rest of the religious education team have built together.

The Director of Religious Education is responsible primarily for facilitating our children's faith development, but also assists with adult classes, covenant groups, meetings, and worship. This is a very rewarding position for someone who is creative, enjoys working closely with children and adults, is an excellent  communicator (written and public speaking), and thrives on helping others grow. The position is 20 hours per week and the new DRE should be able to start work not later than January 1, 2015.

Qualifications will include an appropriate mix of education and experience in teaching, working with families, program administration and Unitarian Universalism.

To express interest in this position please send a cover letter and resume to Rev. David Messner at [email protected].

UU Coffee House Tonight!
Thursday, November 6
7:30-9:00 pm in Rahn Hall

UU Members and Friends gather in Rahn Hall to share their musical talents and enjoy coffee (or tea) and the company of each other.

This month's theme: Peace, Love & Harmony

Admission: $10, includes your choice of tea or coffee. Folks may bring individual snacks or drinks if desired. Buy a UUCH button for $4 and wear it to get admission to all of this year's coffee houses at half-price.

Short-n-Sweets: pUUzling mUUsic
Sunday, Nov. 9, 1:00-1:30 pm in the Sanctuary

After church, purchase a yummy bag lunch from the Music Alliance, enjoy a picnic in the square, and then join us in the Sanctuary for a fun guessing game as Stephen Brown plays random tunes on the piano in the style of various music periods. We get to guess the melody and the composer in the spirit of NPR's Piano Puzzler.* The first two winners will get free UU Coffee House Buttons, good for half-price admission to UU Coffee Houses for the rest of this year!

*Piano Puzzler is a registered service mark of Minnesota Public Radio, which is not affiliated with and does not endorse pUUzling mUUsic.

Reserving Space for Church Activities

Do you suddenly find yourself in charge of a church event, chairing a committee or leading a group? How do you make sure that you have the right room on the right day at the right time -- and that everyone knows about it? It's easy! Send an email request to [email protected]. You can also click on "Calendar Requests" under "Quick Links" in the left-hand column of this Newsletter or go to our website, uusavannah.org, and scroll down to the Calendar Request button.

Here's what your email should contain: Time (start and finish) and date of event, the title and a brief description, fees if any, whether or not the activity or event is open to general public, whether or not reservations are required, room preference and special needs such as handicap access.

We are a busy, growing church with a lot going on! Space must be reserved in advance, and your reservation is not complete until confirmed by the office. Once confirmed, your event will appear on the website. Please put "Calendar Request" in the subject line of your email for faster processing.
