Between the Eagle and the Hippo
Rev. Anthony Makar
Poet & Unitarian Universalist
Carl Sandburg once wrote, "There is an eagle in me that wants to soar, and there is a hippopotamus in me that wants to wallow in the mud." This is but a variant of the idea that there are two seemingly contradictory impulses the heart of every person: to savor the world and to save it. Today we connect with the genius of our UU religious way and how it helps us live within the savor/save tension and make it creative.
Rev. Makar is the Senior Minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta. We are fortunate to have him return to lead worship in Savannah again this year!
This special worship guest leader made possible by the generous sponsoring gift of Bill and Donne Rolfes.

Minister's Reflections
On the Monthly Theme of Connecting
The Voting Card
Rev. David H. Messner
At the end of June, I participated in the General Assembly of our Unitarian Universalist Association. As a settled minister, I also served as a voting delegate. They issued me a slim bright yellow card with which to vote at key points in the business meetings. With the power of that precious card in hand, I couldn't wait for the votes to come up. I just kept thinking, "what else can we vote on? Ask me something else!" It was like sitting in those old 3D movies waiting for the exciting moments when a dramatic image leapt from the screen toward you in the audience. Click to continue.

Religious Education for Children and Youth
Register Now!
The beginning of a new school year is always an exciting time, and so it is as we begin to structure our 2014-15 Religious Education year. The RE committee has met, and plans for the coming year are vigorous and exciting: a new curriculum, a strong prospective team of teachers and teaching assistants, and a great group of students.
Our vision is to create a cooperative "church school" - a caring, active community of families. To make this vision a reality, we are asking each parent and caregiver to volunteer in our RE program, whether as a provider of snacks, a classroom teacher or assistant, a special projects leader, or a Service Sunday helper. As we all work together, a strong, consistent and vibrant program will help students discover and nourish their spiritual lives. Just as importantly, you and your children will receive the support and human connection from other families that is so necessary in today's society. Please note that enrollment is required each year, as it is essential that we receive updated personal information. Please attend an RE kick-off meeting for parents and caregivers to be held on August 10 at 12:30 in the church sanctuary. Rev. Dave and our Director of Religious Education will elucidate our vision for RE, as well as provide information about the upcoming year. Childcare will be provided. We are excited to see you there! - The UUCS Religious Education Committee

Environmental Advocacy Trip to Atlanta
July 28-29, 2014
Expense paid trip to Atlanta to help save the planet anyone?
As you may have heard, the EPA has proposed new clean energy rules. One of only 4 public comment hearings is being held in Atlanta on 7/29, and the Sierra Club is encouraging participation from Savannah. They are providing bus transportation, all meals, and an overnight stay at a hotel in Atlanta for Savannah folks who register to comment. They'll even have signs and other "enviro-bling" for supporters when they arrive. The bus will leave around 6 pm on 7/28 and will return around 8 pm on 7/29.
Anyone interested in participating is asked to register to comment in one of the morning time slots on the EPA site: http://www2.epa.gov/carbon-pollution-standards/forms/public-hearings-clean-power-plan-proposed-rule#register
Vicki Weeks is coordinating UU participation, so contact her at [email protected] to RSVP. Vicki will also be at the engagement table after the late service on Sunday to answer questions and help with registration.

Opportunity to Lead: Savannah Pride Day
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah has a long history of standing on the side of love as a voice affirming the dignity and rights of LGBT people. One way we can continue this tradition is with a strong presence at the Savannah Pride Festival which is planned for September 13 in Forsyth Park.
Would you like to be a part of creating the UU presence at the festival? A team is needed to plan, coordinate and oversee the booth this year. It is a fun and powerful way to connect with the larger Savannah community.
If you would like to be a part of the team -- or even the team "captain" -- send a note to Denise German, the Chair of our Social Justice Committee, at [email protected]. |
