eUpdate - May 8, 2015
We want you: Writing coaches, intern hosts and kids for great summer programs!
Sign up for WriterCoach Connection & 'earn and learn'

WriterCoach Connection: As the son of a longtime Kennedy High teacher, I was fortunate enough to have the value of education -- especially reading and writing -- instilled in me at a young age.

I believe all children in our community deserve the opportunities I had.

WriterCoach Connection (WCC), an award-winning volunteer mentoring program, has established strong roots in our West County schools, and we want to sustain and advance those gains.

WriterCoach Connection volunteers coach students one-on-one in English classes, helping them with writing assignments. Working with these mentors, students hone their ability to write clearly, build ideas, and think critically, all providing a solid foundation for college and workforce excellence.

The volunteer coaches gain insights into classrooms and assignments, get valuable training and enjoy the satisfaction of helping young people succeed. All for just a couple of hours per week!

WCC provides free training to help you be a terrific coach, and the camaraderie you'll build with students and fellow coaches will be great too.

As Nelson Mandela stated, "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world."

I urge you to call WCC to get more information and decide whether the opportunity is right for you.

Where: WCC works with middle and high school students in El Cerrito, Richmond, Berkeley, Albany and Oakland.

When: WCC is now registering volunteers for fall 2015. The fall training schedule will be posted this summer.

Earn & Learn East Bay Internships: Led by the Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County and the Contra Costa Economic Partnership, Earn & Learn East Bay links employers with local youth for summer internships.

Participating businesses have a chance to build their future workforce, showcase their industry, and have a direct impact on strengthening their community while giving young people the experience they need.

We need businesses to step up and be part of this great program, building the kind of workforce capacity that will pay economic dividends for decades to come.

For more information or to sign up, visit: Earn & Learn East Bay. You can also call Robert Rogers in my office for more information at (510) 231-8688.

Free Summer Camp for West County Kids: After a successful launch in Summer 2014, Achieve Summer Camp is back and even better this year.

Thanks to a partnership between the City of Richmond, the West Contra Costa Unified School District and the Ed Fund, these summer camps at local community centers are free for qualifying families.

Among the sites are Shields Reid Community Center in North Richmond, Nevin Community Center and Parchester Village Community Center. Kids take regular field trips as part of the program.

The key is to register now, because space is limited! Camps start on June 8.
To register, visit this website, walk-in to any Richmond community center or call (510) 620-6793.
