The Fear Factor of Buying a Franchise

fear

Author and Philosopher Bertrand Russell once said "To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom."

Buying a franchise is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make, so feeling fear is not only normal, it is entirely appropriate to the situation.

Who has fear? Everyone! Fear prevents us (most of us, anyway) from jumping out of a moving car or going over a waterfall in a barrel. Fear helps us make choices that are less likely to endanger our lives. Fear also prevents us from gambling our life's savings on a horse race or marrying someone we've known only a few days.

However, when we feel we have enough information about a subject, we can often get over fear and do things that were beyond our comfort zone.

If you are one of those people who has done your homework and found the franchise opportunity you've always dreamed of but can't seem to commit to a decision, then the final doubts you have are probably about your own abilities rather than the franchise itself.

This is where a qualified franchise consultant can help you. By assessing your interests, skills and experience, a consultant can guide you to a decision where risks are at an acceptable level and the benefits, while not certain, are well worth the effort.

The only problem with fear is when you allow it to stop you from doing something you know will make a positive difference in your life. Don't let fear stop you from reaching your goals!

Ben & Jerry's

Total Locations: 260

Ben & Jerry's was first opened by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in Burlington, Vermont on May 5, 1978.  In the year prior, Cohen and Greenfield completed a correspondence course on ice cream making from Pennsylvania State University's Creamery.  Cohen has severe anosmia, a lack of a sense of smell or taste, so he relies on "mouth feel" and texture to provide variety in his diet.  This led to the company's trademark chunks being mixed in with their ice cream.

Ben & Jerry's operates on a three-part mission that is the core to their business.  Their Product Mission drives them to make fantastic ice cream.  Their Economic Mission requires them to manage their company for sustainable financial growth.  Their Social Mission calls them to use their company in innovative ways to to serve the common good.

Ben & Jerry's offers three different types of franchise businesses:
  • Full size shop: 700-1200 sq. ft.
  • In-line scoop shop: 450-650 sq. ft.
  • Kiosk: 100-200 sq. ft.

Coyote Ugly Saloon
Cash Needed: $250K
Total Investment: $500K-$1M
Total Locations: 21

The original Coyote Ugly Saloon opened on January 27, 1993 in New York City by Liliana "Lil" Lovell.  The Coyote Ugly legend began when "Lil", a 24-year-old Wall Street apprentice-turned-bartender, started gaining notoriety for her antics on the bar as well as behind it.  Tired of working for other people, she was ready to make her move.  The plan was simple: open her own bar, make money, and have fun doing it.  Determined not to let anyone or anything get in her way, she drew up a business plan: beautiful girls + booze = money!

Coyote Ugly Saloon has over 22 years of business experience, 21 locations worldwide, a blockbuster movie, three seasons of a reality show on MTV's Country Music Television, and is ready to expand all over the globe.  Coyote Ugly Saloon is actively seeking highly qualified franchisee partners with prior restaurant experience,  sufficient financial resources, and knowledge of their development area to grow along with them.

Coyote Ugly Saloon's training process for their new franchise owners includes training at one of their corporate sites to experience all aspects of the saloon, from the choreographed dances to the back-of-house tasks, such as inventory and bookkeeping.  The training team will also visit the franchisee's new location to assist in the "Coyote Search" and training of the team leading up to the grand opening.  Are you ready to be a franchise partner with the most famous bar in the world?

MasterWhat is an Area Representative or Master License?
b2bhandshake
Some franchises have opportunities known as Area Representative or Master Franchise Licenses.  An Area Representative License involves the development of a geographic region that can be as small as a single city or as large as an entire state; while Master Franchise Licenses are normally reserved for the development of an entire country.  You purchase the right to develop a designated area and share in the franchise fees and royalties with the franchisor.  You work closely with commercial real estate agents, business brokers and consultants in the development of your area.  The investment needed to secure an Area Representative or Master Franchise opportunity can start as low as $150K depending on the franchise and geographic area.
