Tip of the Month
The Benefits of Art Therapy
By Wanda Vollmer, Program Aide
Being a person with a chronic illness, we learn about many different types of therapy. Pharmaceutical therapy, physical therapy, speech, occcupational and the list goes on. Art therapy is one that is not spoken of very often. Art therapy is an approach that utilizes the creative processes of a person for therapeutic purposes. Self-expression through art can grant a person greater self-awareness as well as relieve tensions and help explore or reconcile internal conflicts.
There are many benefits to using art as therapy. It allows participants to communicate what is sometimes difficult to put into words. It can help participants increase their self-esteem and self-awareness. Using art as therapy can help you process depression, emotion, and manage stress or anxiety issues. Many types of art are out there to explore. There are classes that cover techniques in sculpture, drawing, painting, poetry, performance art, photography, and other mediums that can help connect you to the aforementioned therapeutic processes. There are books and free videos on YouTube that offer instruction on these art forms such as sand art, ceramics and more. In fact, for September's Support Group (Friday, September 25th), our topic is Social Art Day with Karen Livingstone Fenton from 11:00AM to 1:00PM at the Marina Public Library. Save the Date! You bring yourself, we will provide lunch. We will also provide the paint, brushes and canvases. Karen will guide us in a painting exercise so bring your creatvitiy. Don't think you can paint? Think again, we can all paint and we can all express ourselves in some way through this art form. Seating is limited! Please RSVP to reserve your spot at 831-333-9091.

Did You Know?
Medicare Open Enrollment and
HICAP counseling
By Osiris Salgado, Case Manager
The Medicare open enrollment period is just around the corner, running from October 15 through December 7 each year.
During this period, you are given the opportunity to make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) for the following year. The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program or "HICAP" provides no cost counseling, information, and assistance to consumers regarding Medicare and changing Part D or advantage plans. Volunteer counselors can help you understand your specific rights and health care options. Their goal is to ensure that you have the information necessary to make an informed decision and have the most effective coverage. HICAP counselors do not sell, recommend, or endorse any insurance product, agent, insurance company, or health plan. For more information or to contact the HICAP office in your area, click on your county link below:
