Help Raise Public Awareness of MS!
MSQLP's e-newsletter September edition
From the President

As I leave California for my new life in Florida, I would like to pause and thank the many wonderful people with whom I have had the opportunity to work with over the years. MSQLP began its journey back in 2000 when Dr Lotte Marcus and Dr Gerard Lehrer saw the need for a safety net for people with MS and their families. They, with the support of the other founders, Ron Grubman, Cyndi Nelson, and Gene Harter, formed this non-profit organization which has grown and touched the lives of so many. This organization has been blessed with hard working Board Members from its inception. I want to thank all of you who have given so selflessly over the years. Of special note is Donna Krasnow who was at the helm for many years. We have had the opportunity to work with many bright, passionate students from CSUMB. MSQLP's staff over the years has been second to none. What would we have done without Kim King and Narit Gesslar?

At this time, MSQLP is strong and in good hands. Gene Harter has returned to take the reigns as President. We are in the process of adding new board members. We are continuing our relationship with CSUMB as a field placement for undergraduates. Grant and Angie are excited about their roles and participation with MSQLP. At the last Board Meeting, Grant was promoted to the position of Executive Director. He is ready for the challenge!

My life has been touched by all of you, this wonderful MS community on the central coast. Thank you for the memories. I will be at the Walk 'n Roll on the 14th to say goodbye, with smiles and tears.

But.... I will still be on board rooting for MSQLP. The wonders of telecommuting.

Sincerely,

Andrea Dowdall

Did You Know?

MSQLP's Water Aerobics Program
By Heidi Castro- MSQLP Intern

Did you know that water aerobics is not only a fun way to exercise, but also helps to stimulate circulation with the use of the arms, legs, and helps to improve balance? A trainer from the Monterey Sports Center directs clients in MSQLP's water aerobics program, which MSQLP sponsors for free to all of our clients and their caregivers. The water aerobics class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 12pm-1pm at the Monterey Sports Center.

Exercises from water aerobics has many benefits different from exercise on land. Water aerobics takes less effort, which provides better movement and helps to support weak limbs. Aquatic exercise also provides resistance in the water that can be used to improve muscle strength. Slow exercises in water help to improve balance and coordination, which may be harder for some to perform on land. The temperature of the water can also help to maintain lower core body temperature even with strenuous activities, can be very helpful for individuals with heat sensitivity issues.

Water aerobics not only helps individuals with MS with their mobility, flexibility, balance, and endurance but also provides social support. Friendships formed help you stay motivated to continue. Having fun at water aerobics can also improve your mood and help increase self-esteem. In addition, research has shown that any form of regular exercise can decrease stress and promote more relaxation.

Interested in improving your quality of life in an enjoyable environment? Feel free to call the MSQLP office at (831) 333-9091 and we will assist in getting you started. Don't forget it's free to all MSQLP clients and their caregivers!

Tip of the Month
Avoiding scams during the current Healthcare Reform

Unscrupulous people found a way to cash in when Medicare Part D began and have resurfaced to take advantage of the implementation of health care reform that begins in October. Any change in health care sets off another round of attempts to take advantage of people with Medicare. But this time the target market will include younger people who will, for the first time, be guaranteed the right to health insurance through a health care exchange, called Covered California in our state.

Here is a list of things that are clear signs of a scam:

  • Demands for your Medicare number or your Social Security number
  • Unsolicited offers to help you sign up for the new health care benefits before October
  • Demands that the new law requires you to give them your personal or financial information
  • Demands that the new law requires you to buy new health insurance
  • Unsolicited calls, visits, or emails from a representative of the federal government about the new law
  • Unsolicited calls, visits, or emails from a "navigator" under the new health care reform law

Unsolicited calls, visits, or emails a from representative of the new "exchange"

Neither the federal government nor Covered California will contact anyone about the new law. No personal or financial information should ever be divulged to a stranger over the phone. One exception is when filing out an application for coverage through Covered California beginning in October.

Amy's Corner
2-1-1 has got you covered!
By Amy Lamb Heckel, RDH

Are you aware of the plethora of resources that you can reach just by dialing 2-1-1? Instead of experiencing frustration while trying to track down the information you need, let 2-1-1 be your bridge to the important health and human services available in our community. (Of course MSQLP is listed!) The 2-1-1 program is funded primarily by United Way. Some 2-1-1 centers also receive money from state and local governments. In some locations the federal government also contributes.

Why would any government want to fund this program? The University of Texas Ray Marshall Center for the Study of Human Resources stated "A national service of this type is estimated to provide $1.1 billion in net value to society over the next ten years."

Telephone books and 4-1-1 often offer general information that can be very confusing. When a caller dials 2-1-1 they are able to access specific information about resources available locally. In our area 2-1-1 is staffed 24 hours every day. (Yes, they are even open on holidays.) 90% of the US population is covered by 2-1-1. We are. Your friends and family probably are as well. So spread the word!
