From the President
Summer has arrived in the tri-county! If you are having difficulties staying cool, let the office know and we may have some possible solutions.
Summer also means that there are fewer people in the MSQLP office. Our wonderful CSUMB interns are on break, though they are in the office occasionally to help. Angie is working for MSQLP now, but only one day a week. So, Grant may be stretched a bit from time to time. My main focus currently is writing grants and growing our hard working MSQLP Board.
Please keep an eye out for information in the mail about MSQLP's approaching Walk 'n Roll fundraiser. This is the seventh annual walkathon, BBQ, and fundraiser that MSQLP has organized and this year it is developing into something truly fantastic! Our goal is to raise $10,000. Remember that money brought in during this event supports services offered to our local MS community.
The committee behind this year's Walk 'n Roll has been hard at work soliciting new & fun raffle prizes. Tammy Jennings, a MSQLP board member and Walk 'n Roll Committee member, has led the soliciting efforts and has even secured tickets to Disneyland as one of the available prizes! If you are interested in joining the fundraising efforts for Walk 'n Roll, it's not too late! Give the office a call at 333-9091.
Sincerely, Andrea Dowdall Board President Program Supervisor |

Spotlight on the MSQLP NewsletterAs many of you may already know, MSQLP has been connecting our MS community with self-produced newsletters since early 2004. Our newsletters have been filled with an abundance of important information regarding upcoming MS related events, tips for managing challenging MS symptoms, ideas & support for when times are tough, as well as education about regional and local resources available to the MS community. It was only recently that MSQLP made the decision to transition from postage mailing hard-copy newsletters to producing the e-newsletter template that you are now reading. In short, this is a new road for us. Needless to say, we think the transition to e-newsletter publications has been very successful. We have been able to reach a much larger audience as well as cut costs (the cost of printing & the time it took to mail the hard-copy newsletters from the office). However, we are always looking to improve the content included in our new-ish e-newsletter and for that we are asking for your help with improving it. Please take the time to complete this short survey: MSQLP e-news survey and help us get an idea of how to further improve the e-news content. Missed out on the "traditional" hard-copy newsletters? We have an archive available here.

Did You Know?
Local & regional resources for mobility equipment repair.Sometimes the equipment you buy breaks. And if they haven't yet, it's just a matter of time. That's why it's important to know the locations available where you can get your mobility equipment fixed. In regards to repairing mobility equipment, it's recommended to always go to the vendor that sold you the equipment first. Most mobility vendors provide repair services at little to no cost to you thanks to your (assumed) healthcare coverage. However, if your mobility vendor is not local, or no longer providing repair services there are some other options available to you: Regional:West Coast Medical Equipment & RepairWCM works with all the major insurance companies, Medicare, and Medicaid. Their service area is from San Francisco to the Mexican border, WCM will personally come to your home to pick up your broken chair and give you a free loaner device while yours is repaired. WCM has inventory including scooters, wheel chairs, walkers, orthopedic and diabetic shoes, medical supplies, hospital beds and more. Local:Two Boys with Toys Scooter Repair"Customer satisfaction is the foundation of our business, and we want anyone who walks through our doors to know that we're here to offer expert knowledge and advice on the repairs they will receive. If you need to replace a part, we're also happy to order it for you. We offer free pick up & delivery in the Monterey area."
If you need more informaion about any of these resources please call the MSQLP office at 831-333-9091.

Tip of the Month
Social Activities & Meeting New People
A rendition of an article in MSAA's The Motivator authored by Maryann Hunsberger
How can someone with MS get out and meet new people? In many cases, they can accomplish this in the same way that people without MS meet people - by participating in activities that focus on things they enjoy. It's easier to find things to talk about with people who share the same interests. People who enjoy reading can discuss their favorite books at a book club. Gardening enthusiasts can get new tips and make new friends at a gardening club. Additionally, book stores may offer occasional book signings, while large garden/home improvement centers often hold various instructional classes. Taking - or teaching - adult evening classes at local high schools and community centers can be a great way to find like-minded people. Whether teaching techniques of painting or learning more about playing Bridge, these classes provide an outlet for encountering others who enjoy the same hobbies. Community colleges also have many classes available, from noncredit floral arranging classes to for-credit international language classes. People with MS who use wheelchairs sometimes find it hard to meet others when so much of the world is inaccessible. But you will find that while meeting others for social activities, newer buildings are generally more wheelchair-friendly. Centers for Independent Living in every state provide support groups for people with disabilities where friendships can form. Find your local center at cccil.org. MSQLP also provides two MS specific support groups in the Salinas & Monterey cities. Some people meet friends at exercise classes for people with disabilities. You can combine your desire to exercise and socialize at MSQLP's Water Aerobics program provided twice a week free at the Monterey Sports Center.
