From the President
The new year started off with a bang at MSQLP. Questcor put on two highly informative educational events presented by Dr "K" and Dr Bandari. These will be followed by educational events in February and March. MS specialists enjoy coming to our area because the MS community here is always thirsty for new info. (The food is always great, too!) And, we held our second Beyond MS: A Workshop for Families Living with MS workshop. Although fewer people were in attendance then at the first workshop, by all accounts it was just as successful.
I want to thank everyone who has donated to Birdies for Charity. Through your support, we were able to participate in the Birdies for Charity Shoot-Out Qualifier held on January 19th. Our golfer, Adam Greene from PG Links, came in 7th out of 40 golfers representing other organizations. And let me tell you, there was some really stiff competition this year! So, now MSQLP will be one of 8 charities participating in the Chevron Shoot-Out Qualifier on February 5th. Grant, Carrieanna, and Larry Swank will be with Adam to cheer on a celebrity team who will be playing for MSQLP. The least we will receive is $1,000 from the Shoot-Out. This does not include your donations which will be matched by 15-20% by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation. Needless to say, thank you, Adam.
On the financial front, MSQLP received $10,000 from the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation for our Case Management Program. And, the Harden Foundation has again given MSQLP a $20,000 matching grant. We are so blessed to have these organizations believe in what we do here at MSQLP. One goal of 2013 is to hire another Clinical Manager when all funding is secured. Grant is currently our only paid staff.
Happy Valentine's Day. Go 49ers!
Sincerely,
Andrea Dowdall

Spotlight on MSQLP Intern- Osiris Salgado
An interview with Grant Helm- MSQLP Staff
First off, what is your name and where are young going to college?
My name is Osiris Salgado. I am currently a student at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) pursuing a bachelors degree in Collaborative Health and Human Services with a concentration in Social Sork.
Where do you reside?
I am currently living in Salinas.
What made you choose MSQLP as a prospect for your Internship placement?
I really wanted an internship placement where I could easily talk to my mentors and ask them questions. I felt that at MSQLP that was going to be possible since it is a small non-profit.
You have been an intern for awhile now, what is your favorite aspect of working at MSQLP?
My favorite aspect of working at MSQLP is interacting with clients because they always know how to brighten up your day.
What are your career plans in the near future?
I am hoping to graduate from CSUMB in December 2013. After graduating from CSUMB I want to continue volunteering at local non-profits so that I can continue getting experience and then hopefully go for my masters. Osiris has been an asset to the MSQLP team due to the diligence in her work, her compassion when working with clients, and her ability to get things done quickly! We are proud of the growth we have observed in Osiris's professional development and we are excited to have her for 2 more semesters!

Tip of the Month-Relationships in a Support Group
Written by Ruth Forsberg and Marie Swank, Support Group members
A support group (SG) provides a forum for people to gather and share a common interest. Our MS Support Groups strive to provide a safe and empowering space for people to bring questions, triumphs, and new coping strategies. It's a place to learn from each other. Often someone in the group has been there and can listen with an informed heart.
The SG functions as a resource for people to learn about medical updates and services.
The SG is also a social gathering that gets you out of the house and out of a rut; it can be a place to make new friends and share some laughs. Close friendships may develop as experiences are shared. It's a time to get together with other people who have similar concerns. SGs can activate your sense of humor. Sharing our situations with others who can personally relate to what might seem tragic, occasionally morphs into a situation where you can laugh.
People with all varieties of MS are welcome. MS is unique to each individual and the disease is unpredictable in its course. However, we can all learn together in the support group and enjoy the company along the way.
Caregivers and family members are welcome to attend and participate. If you don't want to come alone, or getting to the meetings is a problem, perhaps the office can help coordinate car-pooling.
If you are interested in coming to a meeting, check the upcoming support groups dates on this e-news page or call the office at 831.333.9091.
