2013 "Stuff the Bus"

A Huge Success

Thanks Logan County!

The United Way of Logan County completed their annual "Stuff the Bus" Promotion with a Bellefontaine City School Bus parked at the Logan County Farmers Market as the final collection point for this year's event.  More than $8,000 in much needed supplies were donated to this years event.

While the economy in our community continues to improve, there is still a definite need for this type of support and the United Way "Stuff the Bus" program helps many students return to school with the supplies required to help make their year a success.

The Youth Group from First Lutheran Church volunteered to sort the product in preparation for delivery to the schools.

This is a neat and easy way to help our students and we emphasize that all of the school supplies collected remain locally and are shared equally among our city and county schools.  With the help and support of the entire community students will be able to start the 2013/14 school year with the supplies they need.

Our thanks to everyone in the community who contributed or helped in any way.  A special thanks to the following who opened their doors as drop-off locations for early donations ahead of the promotion.

A Scouting Program Unique

to Logan County Youth

Logan County Cub Scouts and siblings were treated to another unique experience again this summer. For the second consecutive year, the elementary aged youth took part in a specially designed program at the Ohio Caverns.

The kids played games, learned age-appropriate skills and were able to tour the historic Ohio Caverns as part of a three-day "Twilight Camp: Scouting Down Under: A Real Caving Experience."

For the second year, more than 130 youth have been part of this experience learning skills and participating in experiments that amazed them. Each night the kids took home a uniquely crafted gift and knowledge of the workings they experienced.

Mary Woolf, of Bellefontaine St. Patrick Church's Pack 81, spearheaded the activities and her team did a fantastic job offering the Logan County kids a program not offered anywhere else in the area.

Newsletter - September/October 2013
Greetings!

The United Way of Logan County kicked off their 2013 Campaign on Thursday September 19th. This event marks the beginning of the UWLC annual fundraising campaign, which helps to support the programs of 22 non-profit partner agencies within Logan County.  The UWLC goal for 2013 is to raise $700,000, an increase of approximately 5% over last year's results.

The annual Kick-Off has provided a strong foundation allowing us to reach 26% of the 2013 Campaign Goal. The morning rain did not slow the process or reduce the enthusiasm. Thanks to the generosity of Jason Duff and his staff the event was quickly moved inside to the Stage building on South Main Street where approximately 150 people gathered to listen to the preliminary results of this year's 10 Pacesetters.

2013 Pacesetter companies include:  Belletech Corporation, Honda Transmission, Logan County Electric Cooperative, Logan County Board of DD, Mary Rutan Hospital and Logan View, Nash Finch Company, NetGain, Precision Custom Products, Steve Austin's Auto Group and World Class Plastics.

This group of businesses and their associates have laid a solid base for the 2013 Campaign coming in at $184,354. slightly ahead of last year's results.

During the next several weeks additional businesses, the city and county school systems and the city and county government offices will join the Pacesetters and manage through their individual campaigns.

Tara Wagner, the 2013 Campaign Chair opened the meeting stating, "I'm very excited to serve as the Logan County United Way Campaign Chair and have the opportunity to play a role in bringing people and organizations together to make a positive impact on Logan County.   We all work, live and raise our families in this fabulous community and United Way is working to ensure that our future is even brighter.

"Our objective at United Way is simple - to improve the lives of Logan County residents. United Way works collectively with businesses, individuals and government entities to solve our community's most pressing issues. We do this by supporting programs that address the building blocks of self-sufficiency - education, income and health."

"This year 10 Companies in Logan County have set out to accomplish great things, they have acted and dreamed, they have planned and they have truly believed in the Logan County United Way!"

In addition to the many business that support the UW with internal programs, a mass mailing campaign will be used in an effort to contact all retirees within Logan County.  While working for a company or business we each have an opportunity to participate by donating to the United Way through our normal place of employment.  Once retired, we tend to lose contact with this important segment of our community.

The annual UWLC Campaign Kick Off is a call to action that helps to build excitement within the community. Through the generosity of our many donors and the support of our volunteers, Together, we are able to improve the lives of the residents in our community.  We look forward to continuing to build from this strong foundation and to a successful Campaign.  Our thanks go out to the businesses and residents of Logan County for their continued support.

This year, as an added feature to the Campaign, donors will be able make a contribution online by going to the UWLC Web Site at www.uwlogan.org  and clicking the "DONATE" button at the upper right side of the home page.   If you have questions please contact the United Way office at 130 South Main Street or call them at 937-592-2886.

"Together" we will make a difference.

UNITED WAY OF LOGAN COUNTY ANNOUNCES THEIR NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Board of Trustees of United Way of Logan County has selected their next Executive Director who will replace James Donnelly when he moves back into retirement at the end of 2013.  After several weeks of interviews and meetings, Heidi Reser was selected to fill the position and will bring with her a determination to raise the bar even higher.

Heidi and her family moved to Logan County in 1983 to open Lee's Comfort Shoes, the fourth shoe store in the family business.  Heidi is married to Jack Reser and their family consists of Ashley, grandson Leo, Jordan and his wife, Joanna, all residing in Bellefontaine.  Heidi has been actively involved in the community in many varied capacities; First United Methodist Church, Saint Patrick's Catholic Church, many school activities, serving on several local boards and a member of the Bellefontaine Rotary Club.

Mrs. Reser worked at the Logan County Chamber of Commerce in the Convention & Tourism division as co-director.  She developed and marketed Logan County tourism opportunities throughout the state of Ohio.  In 1998, Mrs. Reser began working at the Logan County Educational Service Center and established the Logan County OhioReads program to coordinate training of community volunteers to read with elementary children in their schools.  With the advancement to Special Projects Coordinator, Mrs. Reser facilitates the Logan County Youth Leadership program, College Day, Academic Achievement, Logan County Art & Music Festival, media coordination as well as a number of educational programs.

"I am eager to work with the generous Logan County business community as they continue to give to the annual United Way campaign.  United Way's 22 agencies work to meet the needs of 1 out of every 3 Logan County citizens. In the words of Helen Keller, 'Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."

Donnelly will remain in place supporting Tara Wagner, the 2013 Campaign Chair, the Campaign Cabinet and volunteers as they work toward this year's $700,000 goal.

While the past two years have been enjoyable and fun and provided him with an opportunity to give back to the community Donnelly states that "it's now time to pass the bar to our next leader, someone who can provide a new set of eyes and ears.  The local economy has improved dramatically but there remain many within our county who struggle to maintain the basics for a good quality of life. Heidi brings a background and a set of skills that will enable the UWLC to move to the next level."

"I want to thank the UWLC Board for providing the opportunity for me to serve as their Executive Director and the businesses and residents of Logan County for their tremendous support during my time in the position. While there is still much to do, Together, we have accomplished many of the goals and objectives that were identified two years ago."

RSVP Reading Buddies Program

Amber Armbruster, Head Teacher at Bellefontaine KLP, wrote the following about the Reading Buddies volunteer she had in her classroom this year.

"Karen makes each Wednesday exciting right when she comes through the door. She is always wearing a silly hat of some sort. The children are then curious as to what Karen is up to, and what books are in her bag. The children gather around Karen on the carpet and will sit with her reading books for up to 20 minutes at a time. She has instilled an excitement of reading in the children. She has made reading fun, silly, and comforting. She has become part of our classroom."

Last spring retired teacher Jim King used his talents and experience in the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program's new Reading Buddies program. Every Wednesday morning Jim read a book to the entire class, often using props and always incorporating silly gestures that kept the children's attention. Then the children would have the opportunity to read one-on-one with Jim.

RSVP Director Greg Morrow explains the importance of the Reading Buddies program "RSVP Reading Buddies volunteers inspire a love of reading within children at a very young age. This sets them up to be a success academically and ultimately in life."
