Easttown Library Proudly Marks 10th Year in New Building!

On February 21, 2003 the newly constructed Easttown Library opened its doors to the public. Community response was immediate. The library has been a busy community center ever since.

Easttown Library today
Prior to opening the new building, the library occupied the cafeteria and kindergarten wing of the former Berwyn Elementary School.  Since its founding in 1905, the library has had nine different addresses in Berwyn!  Click here to see photos.

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our present building, we are thankful for the support of the community and the township that made this wonderful facility a reality.  The ongoing hard work and dedication of the library's staff, Board of Trustees, Foundation Board, Friends group and volunteers enable us to continue to provide the excellent service our users have come to expect.

By adding new seating and study places, we have made the library a welcoming destination for a growing number of people.  Our constantly changing collection is current and meeting the increasing needs and requests from our community.

We are eagerly anticipating the decade ahead.  Come visit us and let us know if we can be of service.  We look forward to seeing you!
Ann Plambeck, retired Assistant Director
and Head of Reference shares her story
about moving into the new library building
in 2003.

Looking back ten years, I can't help but smile at how excited my colleagues and I were to be moving back to 720 First Avenue from the temporary location we had moved to during the construction of our new facility.  Same address, but what a wonderful change from the Old Berwyn School kindergarten wing that had been the Easttown Library. We were coming home!

During the construction, I would often come over during the day and wander through the building, checking on the progress and dreaming of how wonderful it would be to have so much space after having been so crowded in the old library.   It was fun to wander through the office and dream of when the staff would have tables and desks to prepare the new books for the shelves. We had been used to doing all of the new book preparations on a few small tables; now we would have a whole room!

As the reference librarian, I was amazed at the size of the reference area and how many computers would be available for our users. I would also have an information desk with a computer and a printer so I could effectively help answer the questions of our visitors.  This is hard to imagine, but ten years ago, computers were not as readily available to most people as they are now.  The library was providing an essential service for many of our visitors who did not have computers at home.

What did I love most about our new building? The open space was such a wonderful addition, with so many areas to sit and read or use the computer. Space in the old building had been so limited, but now we had comfortable chairs and tables for our visitors to use. The fireplace area is such an inviting place to sit and catch up on the news of today.  Sitting there during the winter months, it is easy to forget that it is cold outside! And the staff loved the hot water in the kitchen; we had never had hot water in the old building!

Whenever my husband and I travel, I always take time to visit the public libraries in the cities and towns we stay in. I love to see how they are arranged and used by the residents of the community. When I come back to Easttown Library, I know we are very lucky to have a great library and that our community really enjoys coming in our doors. Ten years have gone by really fast and the library is no longer "new," but it is always full of people and many great memories!

Library Stories
Recently we received a letter from a library user that really underscores the role of the library in our community.  With Michael's permission, we share his library story.

Dear Mr. Silverman,
I am writing you this letter to let you know of a good experience I had in reference to Easttown Library.  I needed some computer work done so I could be ready for a job interview on the next day.  I called Easttown Library and talked to one of the staff at Easttown Library and told her of my job problem.  She said to come over to the library and that she could help me.  Long story short, I got the job!
With sincere thanks to the Eastown Library,
Michael Neal

Anne's story and Michael's letter have inspired an idea.  As we celebrate ten years in our building, we ask you to share your library story.  We will post them in the library in the hope that they will inspire others to share.

To share your library story, email us at Library Story or drop it off on your next visit to the library.
