ACTUALLY, IT'S GETTING BRIGHTER
 This summer, after seeing a bit of downtown theater, I walked for a bit in the balmy June night before hailing a cab. The cab driver began our ride with "Can you pay in cash?" (For those not in NYC, all cab drivers are required by law to take credit cards.) I said I thought I probably could but asked why. The driver launched into a brief, spicy monologue about corruption and the cab companies and the 1%-ers and how cash was much better for him. He had a total "conspiracy theory about everything" vibe so I just let him ramble and play his eclectic jazz. He went on about how he'd been driving for 30 years "in this hellhole that gets worse every year." I was actually thinking NYC had never looked more beautiful but he continued on a bit, saying that even the street lights had become dimmer. I replied, "Really?" gazing out on 9th street and 6th avenue and thinking... |
