SECOND ROUND TRAVEL
By Craig Sager II

Cross-state road trips await second round pairings

This weekend, 56 teams will hit the road in Georgia looking to keep their playoff hopes alive and earn a spot in this year's quarterfinals. It's not just the teams that will be driving across the state, however, as fans, bands, cheerleaders etc. prepare.  The second round is one of the busiest travel days in the state for football fans and this weekend's slate of games has teams crossing through every corner of the state.

When calculating the shortest one-way route by mileage, not time, between each of the 56 matchups, the average distance is 146.7 miles. Class AA will travel the furthest with an average distance of 199.4 miles. Class AAA has the least mileage waiting as the average distance sits at 117.4 miles per game.

Here is the distance breakdown of each matchup. Drive safely!!!

Class AAAAAA

(26.8 miles) R2 #2 Tucker at R6 #1 South Forsyth
(33.7 miles) R7 #3 Collins Hill at R2 #1 Newton
(45.7 miles) R7 #2 Peachtree Ridge at R3 #1 Westlake
(52.9 miles) R8 #2 Archer at R4 #1 McEachern
(81 miles) R3 #2 Newnan at R7 #1 Mill Creek
(228 miles) R8 #3 Central Gwinnett at R1 #1 Colquitt County
(232 miles) R1 #3 Valdosta at R8 #1 Grayson
(360 miles) R1 #2 Camden County at R5 #1 Roswell

TOTAL: 1,061.1 miles [132.5 miles]

Five of the eight matchups in Class AAAAAA are less than 100 miles apart, the most in any classification. The shortest distance out of any matchup in the state is Tucker's 26.8 mile trip to South Forsyth. Central Gwinnett at Colquitt County (228 miles) and Valdosta at Grayson (232 miles) skew the average along with the furthest distance traveled in Class AAAAAA, which will be Camden County at Roswell (360 miles).

Class AAAAA

(36.3 miles) R4 #4 Drew at #2 South Paulding
(59 miles) R4 #3 Starr's Mill at R5 #1 Allatoona
(63.1 miles) R4 #2 Northgate at R8 #1 Lanier
(68.4 miles) R8 #2 Gainesville at R4 #1 Stockbridge
(111 miles) R6 #2 Mays at R2 #1 Houston County
(230 miles) R6 #3 Kell at R3 #1 Coffee
(315 miles) R7 #4 Rome at R3 #3 Ware County
(397 miles) R3 #2 Glynn Academy at R7 #1 Dalton

TOTAL: 1,279.8 miles [160 miles]

In Class AAAAA, Glynn Academy at Dalton is the longest trip any team will have to take but head coach Rocky Hidalgo has something planned to keep his team loose and ready to roll. The football team will leave Thursday and come to Cobb County to hold a practice/walk thru. They are staying in a hotel in Atlanta and then will go to the Georgia Aquarium downtown after Friday breakfast, before heading 88.6 miles north up I-75 to Dalton. Ware County's 16-7 win over Northside-WR on Saturday made the Gators one of three #3 seeds in the state that will host this week. #4 Rome upset Stephenson 7-6 last Friday and will visit the third-seeded Gators with a 315-mile one-way trip.

Class AAAA

(37.2 miles) R4 #3 Spalding at R5 #1 Woodward Academy
(56.1 miles) R5 #3 Carrollton at R4 #1 Jonesboro

TOTAL: 980.9 miles [122.6 miles]

Class AAAA and Class AAAAAA are the only two classifications that saw all eight No. 1 seeds advance. The average distance between opponents is 122.6 miles in Class AAAA, second shortest only to Class AAA (117.4 miles).  This classification could see a very short travel week in the quarterfinals if the top seeds protect homefield.
