VOLLEYBALL RANKINGS

North Gwinnett, Lassiter jump in AAAAAA poll

Class AAAAAA saw some major changes with North Gwinnett jumping to No. 2. Roswell fell out of the poll with an 0-5 start to the season and Norcross makes its debut at No. 10. Harrison lost to Cambridge and Johns Creek and dropped two places to No. 4.
Cambridge Athletics
Lassiter improved from No. 10 to No. 5 with a 7-0 start and Saturday victories over Oconee County (twice), Roswell,  South Forsyth and Etowah in the Sequoyah Classic.

In Class AAAAA, Dunwoody moved to 7-0 this weekend and took over No. 1. Cambridge jumped Columbus for No. 2 after its impressive win over Harrison.

Class AAAA's top team, Buford, swept Wesleyan and Johns Creek last week and is proving to be arguably the top team in the state regardless of classification but No. 2 Marist is also making its case after a 5-0 start. Heritage-Catoosa debuts at No. 7 with its 6-0 start and Ringgold replaced Ridgeland and debuts at No. 10.

Class AAA No. 1 Blessed Trinity and No. 2 Westminster both suffered losses last week but remain at the top of the poll. Blessed Trinity lost to North Cobb and Sandy Creek and the Wildcats dropped matches to Marist and Holy Innocents'. Decatur moves to No. 3 after sweeping its first eight opponents this season.

In Class AA, Greater Atlanta Christian took over No. 2 with a 5-0 start and Wesleyan dropped to No. 4 after its gauntlet of ranked opponents dropped the overall record to 2-6.

In Class A, Prince Avenue Christian fell out of the rankings with its eighth straight loss and George Walton Academy made its debut after a three set victory over previously No. 2 ranked Hebron Christian.

METRO PCS CORKY KELL CLASSIC

Kell and Carrollton return for a morning kickoff in Dome opener

For the second consecutive season the Longhorns will open up the year against Carrollton in the Corky Kell Classic. Carrollton and Kell are the only two teams that meet again in the Classic. The Longhorns shutdown the Trojans for a 20-7 win last season. Itabari Mason led the Horns with 85 yards rushing and one score in the victory, but he has since graduated.

The Kell Longhorns started their program in 2003 and have quickly turned into Cobb County's winningest program over the past several seasons.  Head coach Derek Cook took over in 2008

and has accumulated 61 wins the past six seasons. Coach Cook has sent numerous players to college in his tenure including Quincy Mauger and Brian Randolph, who both start at safety for UGA and Tennessee respectively.

Last year's 11-1 finish marked one of the better runs in school history.  The Horns capped off a 10-0 regular season with a region 7-AAAAA championship and a spot in the playoffs.  The Horns dominated Winder-Barrow 31-7 in their first-round matchup, but lost a heartbreaker 33-31 to Jones County in the second-round of the playoffs.  The Horns were led by senior quarterback Cameron Rosendahl who threw for 2,341 yards and 17 touchdowns.  Rosendahl is now playing at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Ga.

This year's squad will have to find a replacement for Rosendahl's production at quarterback, but it looks as though senior Stone Hatfield will be the next in line.   Hatfield was used sparingly in 2014, but will be a focal point of the offense this season.  The Horns will have their leading rusher Ivan Walls back this season, as he looks to build on his 1,056-yard and 11-touchdown campaign in 2014.  Walls is a versatile running back who also caught passes out of the backfield including 18 receptions for 211 yards and two scores.  However, first on the depth chart at running back this fall is sophomore Josiah Futral. Futral and Walls will make a nice running back duo for Horns in 2015.

Kell has some experienced receivers back in senior Bryson Armstrong and junior Josh Blancato.  Armstrong was the Horns' leading receiver as he finished with 50 receptions for 725 yards and three scores. Armstrong caught nine balls for 106 yards in last year's Corky Kell. He is currently committed to play for Kennesaw State in 2016.  Josh Blancato was second on the team as a sophomore with 41 receptions for 668 yards and four scores.  On the offensive line the Longhorns are led by senior offensive tackle James DeMatto.  At 6-foot-4 295 pounds, DeMatto has gained offers from Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Louisville and Syracuse.

Defensively, the Longhorns are led by Michael McCain and Armstrong.  McCain from his safety position finished 2014 fifth in the county in tackles with 115 (75 solo).  As well as being a star receiver, Armstrong also starts at outside linebacker for the Horns.  Armstrong finished last season eighth in the county with 113 tackles (74 solo).  Another talented player on the defense is junior outside linebacker Solon Page III.  At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, Page has already picked up an early offer from Tennessee.  Page was hurt almost his entire sophomore year and only played in one game and recorded five tackles.   Longhorns feature a few players besides Armstrong that start on both sides of the ball including Evan Carnes (TE & DE) and Elijah Owens (LG,DT).

CARROLLTON

Carrollton struggled in the first season under new head coach Ed Dudley. It was a season which saw the Tigers finish with a losing record for the first time since 2001. They have not had back-to-back losing seasons since the 1949-1950 seasons, so expect this proud program to bounce back this year. Dudley knows how to win as the previous five seasons before coming back to Carrollton he was the head coach at Ware County High School. His combined record over that span was 50-16. Overall, with stops at Buford and Walton before Ware County and Carrollton, Dudley has amassed a 187-81 record over 23 seasons.

Dudley will not be short on talent this season especially on the offensive side of the ball. One of the biggest returning seniors for the Trojans, however, will miss much of the 2015 season. 6-foot-6  250-pound wide receiver, Jarel Rowe will be sidelined while

recovering from ankle surgery. Rowe has offers from all around the country including Army, Navy and Miami (OH). Rowe also was a key contributor on the basketball team starting at forward. The Trojans fell to Jonesboro, 55-50 in the Class AAAA basketball state championship last year. Throwing him the ball will be returning starter Damarcus Mitchell. Mitchell played in six games last year throwing for nearly 500 yards and completing over 50 percent of his passes. Mitchell is also a threat on the ground rushing for 195 yards on only 23 carries a season ago. Carrying the ball for Carrollton will be senior tail back Conrad Jackson who rushed for 492 yards on 93 carries, which was good for the second most rushing yards on the team in 2014.

The offense will be ripe with experience as the Trojans are slated to start eight seniors and only one sophomore. Senior offensive tackle, Tristan Crowder, will be starting next to the only sophomore. That sophomore just happens to be his younger brother, Khalil Crowder. Tristan has gained interest from many colleges since the end of last season and now has offers from 17 different schools.

The defense will boast six seniors in the starting 11. Roury Glanton will be the cornerstone of the defense. The starting linebacker led the team in total tackles last season with 77 total tackles. 51 of those tackles were solo and nine of them were tackles for loss. He was one of the most dominant player on defense and has an offer from Army. Holding down the defensive front will be three-star (Rivals) Michael Boykin. Boykin has offers from 21 different schools including Florida, Auburn and Mississippi State. He registered 17 total tackles in 9 games last season but the 6'6 250 pound defensive end is primed for a huge year in 2015.
